He knows right then and there Desmond is his brothers keeper❤

The moment in Band of Brothers where one of the men is hit during a night raid, and he's dying in a room afterward and says "I don't want to die". That part hits emotionally hard. The actor really nails the existential fear in that moment and the pain the others around him go through watching him die and not being able to save him. Both of my grandfathers and their 3 brothers fought in WWII in Europe and the Atlantic. They all somehow made it through, but very nearly didn't. The level of respect for these people of that generation is inexpressible. My Grandfather's brother told me once in passing about how he walked into the prison camps and saw the horrid conditions of the people there and the piles of clothing from the dead. He went on to tell me about how he spent years after the war tracking down the mass burial grounds by asking locals for clues and digging up the bodies and giving them proper burials. He spent years of effort to find all those paratroopers who got killed and were not given proper burials by the Nazis. Years, just digging corpses and he said it calmly in passing without expecting a bit of praise. Years. I sometimes wonder what such an experience does to someone and how he managed to keep his sanity and go on with a regular life afterward. And that is just what he did after the war, what happened during it was so much worse.

I’m a female and it hurts to know that a lot of my male friends haven’t cried in years. They don’t allow themselves to because they’ve always been taught to be “strong” and “be a man”. In contrast to woman who are given so much support and safe space to cry, men don’t have that nearly as much as they should. Smitty in this scene was more than a tough guy facade, he was a tough badass to kill, but at the end of the day, he was a man who deserved a better life than what he was handed. I’m glad he had Desmond there to trust his fear and vulnerability to, but sad that it takes a literal war and breaking of his spirit to get there. Too many men bear such a weight to be strong, they deserve better than that.

@@iricrescent2901 No its deeper than teaching. It relates to innate genetic predispositions and instincts. A fair amount of it relates to intrasexual competition so men will avoid crying in front of other men. The vast majority of all violence committed is committed by men and it is committed against other men. Males for most of our evolutionary history survived via a reputation for being dangerous and capable of defending themselves. But any man can tell you that crying in front of a woman does not go over as well as many women claim it will. Women emasculate men who weep. More often than not using it as an opportunity to attack and belittle them. They also paise men who are the rocks or foundations for them, precisely because they do not weep and break down during adversity.

I don't believe in any God but I absolutely understand why people do. Desmond Doss is a prime example of someone using the strength and passion he has in his beliefs to do what he wants to do, in the way he believes his God wishes him to do it. In my eyes it was just a person calling for help, but in Desmond's eyes it was his God using that person as a vessel to convey his will for Desmond. This movie portrays that beautifully and it makes for an incredibly hearttouching moment :)

That medic died cuz there was no plasma. And the plasma he gave up was wasted. Unfortunately

and real,DOSS,MURPHY,YORK and many more,they went above and beyond the call,they were there and they made a difference,live for something or die for nothing,normal men tested,AND FOUND WORTHY,god bless them all,god saw what they did,believe that,he honors bravery,sometimes,most of the time,he helps

The critics are morons. When you learn the real history of Doss you find out what he did was so impressive and unbelievable they said they couldn't put it in the movie because nobody would believe it. Sure they took my liberties but they left out half his story. He served in other areas besides hacksaw. He preformed such incredible feats all throughout the war. There's even a verified instance of a Japanese sniper whose gun jammed multiple times and doss was saving someone. When doss got away the shot went off. Stuff like that was verified by many other soldiers but audiences would never believe it.

you should read the full story of him. Some parts that Dessmond actually did the filmmakers thought no one would believe so they left it out. Truly an amazing human

And he lived to 87 and raised a family despite all the injuries from his service. The man was a legend.

The Japanese had the same kind of courage. Charging in over and over not caring if they live or die. Very courageous.

@@midnull6009 huh? Desmond even helped the enemy (Japanese) soldiers and lowered several down the ridge for the US soldiers to medically treat (then keep as POWs). He carried no weapons and in one night saved over a hundred soldiers down that ridge, despite him having several shrapnel wounds at that point and being incredibly fatigued.

He heard that call the day he met his wife. Ifg ever a man lived a life of heroic virtue, it was he. I measure my own life and know that except for my best moments, it never measures up to his. We do not get to see the blackest moments he faced after the war. One of the worst must have been losing his first wife, in a car he was driving on the way to get her cancer treated. But he knew he had the admiration of the hundreds and thousands of those who met him. The president of the United States, a combat veteran veterans like himself, knew that even among the 15 metal of honor recipients he had out that day, that Doss was someone special. You can see it in Truman’s face and actions. Reminding me that Harry Truman, whatever was the President most like US,

@@MistyWarden Yep. Andrew Garfield did an amazing job in that bit, the look of determination with the "Alright" and the resolve as he put on his helmet. And to think, the real Desmond Doss did so much more that was portrayed because people unfamiliar with his story would think they were exaggerating.

Let's not forget....(if it really occured). He even gave medical attention & aide to the enemy..... But he didn't see those 2 Japanese soldiers as enemy......he saw them as wounded and needed help!

They toned it down in the movie to make it more believable. The real life Desmond Doss was a legitimate, one of a kind sort of soul

Must have been the old ww2 mortar rounds. Modern day mortar round has a small fan in the nose and it arms as it spins except it's been awhile but if I remember right 120mm once you take the pin out it was already armed can't remember exactly and I might be off
