Such an accurate statement…”stack or pile your wood as fits you”. For large sales I agree in piles but for the small sales or homeowners the stacking looks so much better. Good video🇺🇸👏🏻.

When i lived on my old farm i just threw it in a long narrow windrow, full sun and wind worked good. Tried same method on new property, had partial shade and less wind. To be safe i put down 2 inch stone under wood. Looked great thru summer. Started raining in September and didn't quit all fall. Red oak soaked up moisture and started growing mushrooms, not great for sales. I stack all my wood now.

Yeah mushrooms are no good. Drying depends on the climate and a pile really needs full sunlight.

Stacking is used to fully dry out the split wood with air constantly passing through the stack and removing moisture. Piles of split wood capture rain and snow inside the pile and with no air movement, just result in re-weted (and frequently rotting) heavy, wet firewood.
@FirewoodontheHill
@FirewoodontheHill 4 ай бұрын
Technically with stacked wood the wood is tighter with less surface for the wind/sun to get to. I think if you pile in waves and keep it off the ground. The wood dries just fine. I’ve stacked before in sun and in the shade and the sun worked well for me where the shade did not.

I always stacked no matter what..but one yr I was on my own so I just piled and i used a loader to get it high and not taking so much room... .. when I had a pile to me it looked like a mountain I thought I had enough then everyone was guessing how much I had..so I started to stack and I was shocked out of the biggest pile I only had 4 1/2 cord not even close to what we needed... So I learned a value lesson and stacking is the best way to keep track of what I have

@Dorchwoods
@Dorchwoods 4 ай бұрын
@@sandrocamargo698 Yeah stacking wood looks better for sure, and it dries significantly better. I've done these tests time and time again. I get that people WANT piles of wood to work, and dry efficiently, but if the pile is big enough it's literally impossible for the core of it to get any airflow or sun. It's especially bad if the wood in the bottom/core/center of the pile was split when it was wet, or it was split, got rained on, and then more wood was split on top of it. That wood will never get a chance to properly dry enough to the point it will start seasoning, that's when the real bad mold and fungus and mushrooms appear
@FirewoodontheHill
@FirewoodontheHill 4 ай бұрын
I think the key to splitting in piles is don’t go too high too quickly. That’s why I’m working left to right instead of piling and working straight out. I have piled in that spot before and it dried just fine! I only went 8ft high though.

Simple answer: The wood I split is fr my use. I currently have about 7 split cords in the yard and anther 8-9 cords to be split as the weather gets better.(first the Splitter gets a new control valve) *My property is also a pretty common Residential size, in an suburban community. *While I agree Piling tends to allow wood to dry faster in many areas, it is not ideal everywhere. Well stacked and Top covered wood stays drier thru-out the season, as does shed kept firewood.

Yessir I love my 28c. If you want my opinion I think it’s the perfect machine for a 1 or two man operation. I love the small frame because it’s easier to move around and easier to work around. The cycle time is faster than one man to keep up with. It has plenty of power. I don’t see any need with going up in tonnage.

@FirewoodontheHill
@FirewoodontheHill 4 ай бұрын
I agree slowing the belt down would help a lot. The motor will bog down and turn off at a low rpm so that’s why it has to go at that speed. I don’t know how to gear down an engine. Do you?
@FoothillsFirewood
@FoothillsFirewood 4 ай бұрын
I don’t think you’d change anything in the engine I would think that you’d just swap out that pulley/s on the elevator. Could you run it at half throttle? Or will it bog anything less than full throttle? If that’s the case it probably just needs adjustment. I would think any combination of things could slow the belt down whether it’s a larger pulley on the elevator or dialing back your idle speed on the motor. Or a combination of both. That thing is flying though, you’d surely get more years out of it if it weren’t going so fast.

I’m pretty new to your channel. I’ve got my eyes set on this splitter. I’m debating the HO for highway speeds. I’d pimp myself out to travel to split on a clients location & or possibly renting it out periodically. To help recoup the start up capital on the machine. Not sure why they only recommend 45mph on it. What would you say are the cons to this machine? Thanks for your time the content. It’s greatly appreciated.

I really like the EastonMade stuff. The cycle times are faster & the materials used are thicker. You can put a box wedge on several models. He stopped using Hondas. Big negative for me. I’m in the Sierras in cali. The shipping was insane! I’m mostly splitting Oak, Pine, & cedar. We don’t have all the awesome hardwoods of the east/north east.
@FirewoodontheHill
@FirewoodontheHill 4 ай бұрын
You are getting the same machine with the exception of the wheel base. I’ve pulled my 28c 45 mph with no issues but I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting it on a highway. With you wanting to be mobile you will need the bigger frame. The down side to the bigger frame is the machine is bigger so it’s not as easy to work around compared to the smaller frame. Also with the bigger frame comes extra weight. The difference between moving the HO by Hand versus the 28c by hand is a big difference. If you have equipment to move the splitter then that weight difference doesn’t matter. You need to figure out what your needs are and base it off of that.
@FirewoodontheHill
@FirewoodontheHill 4 ай бұрын
You can’t go wrong with Wolfe Ridge splitters. My channel is my proof. The machine works and works well.
@FirewoodontheHill
@FirewoodontheHill 4 ай бұрын
One thing I’ve come to realize is if you have a box wedge machine you don’t change your wedges from 4-way to box wedge. I used to think that Eastonmade had the advantage on that front but in reality everyone keeps their box wedge in if they have one. As far as heavy metal… that’s good and bad. It’s good because it’s durable and it’s bad because it’s heavy. Why go heavy if you can get away with lighter if it’s durable enough? All have their advantages and disadvantages it’s really what works for your personal needs.

@FirewoodontheHill Take a strap, fasten it to the motor, and then to a fork on your tractor. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the motor to the conveyor, then lower it down with the tractor. As far as slowing down the conveyor. 1) Change the pully on the conveyor to a smaller one. This will slow it down. 2) You can change the pully on the motor to a larger one. Changing either pully in this configuration will reduce the revaluation of the conveyor pully and will slow down the belt. As far as how much smaller or larger to go on, the pullies are going to be hit or miss until you find the right combination. Hope this helps. Ron
