With head phones like that... with little base but super crisp... you want the base boost for gaming where you want that extra base but not the total detail of the sound.... in saying that, you're still going to get amazing sound quolity... but not like youd WANT with music.

Not everyone likes how it's intended to sound. For me, I prefer slightly boosted lows and mids, and slightly recessed treble. Just my preference. Flat sounding music or recordings that are lacking don't sound good.

It really depends of the music you're listening to. If you listen to rap or electro for example, they expect you to listen to it with headphones that by default have extra bass, it's the type of music designed to be listened with beats or skull candy and other bass heavy stuff, so when you listen to it with Flat Beyer dynamics or Sennheisers you technically do not listen to it the way it's intended to, I can tell you from experience that there's songs that sound absolutely sad and bland if you listen to them with flat-ish headphones and no specific EQ. But yeah, I don't know why you even think that matters, like, if he likes bass boost, he likes bass boost, how does that affect your life, why do you care ?

@@imnota Music is intended to be listened with a speaker that supports the full range of frequencies (ear buds and some "gaming" headphones don't). If the artist/sound guy has bass boosted headphones with an unbalanced EQ, then whatever he intends the music to sound like will not be what it actually sounds like with a balanced EQ. So in order to make the best balanced music, his headphones' EQ must be as neutral as possible. And then to hear the music in its purest form, you also listen with a balanced EQ. If you turn on bass boost, you can unintentionally create muddiness in the lower frequency range and cause them to cover up some of the mid tones. Hopefully this helps.

I've had the HD650 since December and paired it up with the Fiio E10K at first, truth be told it doesn't really have enough power for it, luckily you can add a dedicated amp and use the Fiio E10K as a dac exclusively using the line out on the back of the unit, an Objective 2 really improved my audio, but since it looks like you're in the US I'd recommend the 110 dollar Magni 3, if you're willing to spend a little more Massdrop has a 250 dollar CTH hybrid tube amp available right now, I just got mine and it's incredible with the 650. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing inherently wrong with the E10K + HD650 combo, but I just wanted to make you aware that the 650 benefits from improved amplification quite a bit, if you don't want to spend any more money and are happy with your current setup, then great!

The HD58X on Massdrop has a 150 ohm impedance instead of 300 ohm. I don't know if that make them easier to drive / how the experience is with the Fiio or onboard sound but if it sound very similar but it easier to drive and cost quite a bit less then all that is nice.

The 650's scale well. The better the amp, the better the headphones get. Put the 650's with a 1000 dollar tube amp and they will sound as good as a 1000 dollar set of headphones. This is why most high end headphone enthusiasts will have a set of 650's in their collection.

@Master Drakthorian . The 650's play very nice with a tube amp. Tubes are great for running high impedance loads and the 650's are rated at 300 ohms. Perfect for tubes. Also the distortion that tubes introduce to the audio signal gels very well with this headphone making them sound so liquidy and sweet. A match made in heaven as they say!

Typically when you split your audio input and output with a deck you get a 60 Hz cycle feedback loop in your system. You may have to deal with this. Open back is the way to go with gaming because they typically have a wider soundstage - which is more immersive and closer to surround sound.

How much is it?, is it comfortable?, does it sound good?, how does it compare to "x" headphones? I think most people can't be bothered trying to understand graphs a specs that are hard to quantify and if your into that kind of thing there are plenty of good websites that have that information eg Head-Fi. And lets face it, most of the time when people talk about how a headphone sounds its just a snakeoil language anyway, "these headphones sound" pure , natural , bright, deep ect. Not exactly a helpful quantification, his videos are informative but they might not be the information you are after.

You should def mount the DAC under your desk. That way its outta your way but the cord plug in and volume knob are still right there and you get full use of the cord length. You might need a longer micro USB but those aren’t hard to come by

I would recommend any from the Audio Technica ADx line (500x, 700x, 1000x & 2000x). They are simply the best at positional and depth accuracy. They are so good you could play FPS games blindfolded. The make things so realistic that you may get PTSD. At the low end, the 500x which I have, can be had for under $70 if you catch them on a good deal.

In general open backed headphones are going to be better with positional accuracy and distance, usually making them the superior with competitive gaming. With the ADx line in particular it's impossible to get anything better (again referring to competitive gaming only here). With good sound engines you can hear the exact location (direction and distance) of the slightest footsteps. Other headphones might sound more "fun", but nothing can beat the ADx line in positional accuracy. There may be a few out there that come really really close or even match the ADx line, but nothing that exceeds it. And the beautiful thing is the low end of the ADx line gives the exact same performance as the high end of the line in terms of positional awareness.

@@mohamedshuaib2424 Definitely. For FPS competitive gaming , Audio Technica ADx line (ADX700x imo) is the best. Pair it up with a good DAC (Fiio E10K) and you've got yourself a very good audio setup. Even for adventure games like Witcher 3 or Assasins Creed Origins / Odyssey it works well too ( for me atleast , because in reality and real life , if you are in a jungle terrain with animals there isn't any bass). The only downside of this headphone is you must get a separate mic and the bass is not strong but thats the selling point for FPS competitive games, you want minimal bass as possible.

If you just want gaming with the occasional audio work here and there, then just go grab the Takstar Pro 82 and then a 2.5 boom pro. I recommend the SMSL sap II pro, though, if you want seamless switching between speaker and headset.

I switched from a custom pair of Aiaiai's to a Beyerdynamic 770 and then to a pair of Beyerdynamic dt 880s and I love them for gaming. I pair them with a JDS element DAC and the sounds is amazing. Buuuuut I have heard a lot of good things about the Sennheiser HD 650s so I may get a pair to try out. Thanks for the unboxing vid!

The interface by itself is ok with its built in headphone amplification but it wont drive high impedance headphones like the hd 650's very loud. The dac in the focusrite is really good already so if you want to drive high impeadance headphones and get your absolute moneys worth you need a small dedicated amp for the headphones. (I personally recommend one from shiit)

Something you should know, Fiio E10K is rated to use with headphones have impedance up to 150 ohms, that's not good enough for the senn hd 650 as it is 300 ohms, you wont get all juice from it. And should have buy Massdrop x sennheiser HD 6xx, it is the same as 650 but at lower price.

I've been using hd600 paired with D1 dac for gaming for about 1 year, and with bottlehead crack for music. I love them and I still use them for none competitive games like witcher or frostpunk but they have one weakness - they are too laid back and suck in virtual 3d sound. For games like overwatch i use sennheiser gsx1000 and ath-adg1x.

I am sorry but you should have not bought the HD 650, especially as a a gamer/Twitch streamer. The FiiO E10K also is not viable to run that headphone, I have the very same and I recommend you only use it for headphones with 100ohms max not even 150ohms which is what it recommends, the HD650 needs 250 ohms to run and I just my Audio-GD R2R-11 to for it. AKG K712/Fidelio X2/AD-900X/700X/DT990/DT770 would have been the perfect choice for gaming imo and would easily work with Fiio depending on the type of sound you want/comfort. I strongly recommend you refund HD 650 while you have the time and buy another alternative. HD 650 is not good for gaming at all, it is a neutral slightly warm, you should go for preferrable a v-shape with low-end for general gaming or very bright for fps.

i strongly disagree see u dont want bass at all when it comes to real gaming you want as much treble as u can possibly get so u can hear those foot steps coming from behind bass just muddys that sound ... the hd650s is an even balanced head phone so with a proper eq'ing you can def have the best of both worlds with those headphones. great choice for gaming especially with that sound stage.

650s a good call over the 600s for gaming. 600s are beautiful, but have a narrower soundstage and less bass. A lot of the sound quality improvements over onboard sound cards with (high impedance) headphones like the HD-650 is from the extra power the amplifier is supplying, not just the better DAC chip. You’ll notice that mostly in the bass.

Try out the Beyerdynamic MMX300 2nd Gen headset....better gaming sound than A40 and possible better audio than the 650 from Sennheiser. Right around the same cost. As well you should get the FiiO K3 amp/dac, which is a far superior version.

The interface needs to have RCA outputs , if its 3rd gen it will have balanced trs and that can get tricky with having to run multiple adapters plus the dac on the scarlett is not really good so id say ether use only the scarlett for now since the 660 is 150 ohm or get a proper dac amp setup

Just buy the fiio e10k and philips fidelio x2hr. Best setup for games/music/movies on desktop

Did you have any issues with the new headphones hurting your ears after a couple of hours of gaming? I've recently gotten the HD58x with Sennheiser GSX 1000 and after a couple of hours my ears start to hurt like I've been at a concert or something. I've had the volume low too and still doing it.

why would you not just use your Focusrite interface? Converters in that will be similar if not better than the Fiio

just a heads up that your audio interface already has a really good DAC, and you dont have to use an adapter for your headphones either

You probably should have got the HD 58X when it was dropping on Massdrop. I have a pair of HD 660 S and I bought a pair of HD 58X for my brother. He is using an Audioengine D1.. The HD 58X is an amazing headphone for the money.

I went for the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X, but yeah I agree with you on all your points, I think its time for me to move away from a gaming headset. Maybe I'll graduate to an HD 650 eventually lol.

Try the PSB M4U 8's. I played C. O. D. with these connected to my Xbox controller and they sound absolutely incredible. Or try the Beats PROs. yes I know they are beats, but they have excellent sound stage and bass for movies and gaming.

Really you can still an amazing experience off the motherboards built in DAC given the motherboard has a good DAC. The second most important factor is the amp dude. Blow your ears out. Hook your headphones to an amp. I don't really like FiiO dacs in comparison to Schiit Audio.
