Title was definitely an attention grabber, had to take a phantom poo break at work, just to check out what was going on. Looking forwards to the book release, and the studio idea certainly seems interesting. Your different video topics have never really pushed me away, especially when it comes to doing something that isn't hardware, I just really enjoy the way you deliver them. The internet history ones were every bit as entertaining and interesting as your console ones, at the end of the day just do whatever you feel passionate about in the moment. When you don't feel as interested in covering a topic, it can be sensed from a viewing perspective, and people just think you are doing it for the sake of it. So I completely understand why you would want to avoid covering specific topics at certain times, if you're not feeling it then don't do it.

KZfaq's algorithm really sucks. Finding a channel like your really is like finding a gem out in the desert.

Yes, most of the quality channels I find are either the result of a direct search for that type of content or the result of somebody that I'm following shouting out that channel. It's the same sort of dry rot that has infested Google for ages, a set of algorithms that make it harder and harder to find content that isn't blessed. There's information from the beginning of the net that's still posted, but virtually impossible to find as Google wants you to look at newer stuff, even if there are major issues with it.

Agreed. This channel is a bizarre niche of stuff I never cared about enough to look up, and find endlessly fascinating to watch. I've subbed to a few creators who cater to that specialty well, and as much as I enjoy the vanilla, easy stuff ("look at my Amiga, ain't it pretty?"), I'm more than happy to wait a month or three for another rabbit hole I never expected. That said, the easy stuff is probably a nice break for both viewer and creator, so I'll happily take some of that mixed in as well. Basically, if you (creator) care, so do I. 👍 Share your passion and I'm there for it.

There are tons of good 9x and XP games too. But basically true. Except for the occasional diamond in the rough, modern games are crap. One of the good ones, Cyberpunk, was widely panned proving modern gamers have no taste. Elden Ring seems good but i only have 10 hours in so I really don't know. Online gaming is just a scam now and all the player messages in ER just seem like writing on the wall. Just a hint at how they will take it MMO and make it all about microtransactions. Free to play = waste of time. My one saving grace in modern gaming has been Fallout 4 and it is 8 years old. But the fan modding community does my heart good and reminds me there are still a few real gamers left. The rest are just pandering for views.

If someone like Nostalgia Nerd is hitting this wall, then what hope do I have? YT is full of 'prank familiies', and assorted hot garbage which gets millions of views thanks to their idiot algo. I just spent about 2 weeks editing a video interview / tour my wife and I did, pretty decent quality, and it's gotten 150 views in 2 weeks. I have 7K subs on my animation channel, and a new vid there will get 100 or 200 views over weeks. Your experience rings very true with me. The Algorithm is the one reason why I haven't bit the bullet and decided to do KZfaq full time. Having a good chunk of your income completely beholden to a mysterious and ever changing set of rules is just scary to me. As a result I can't produce as much as I'd like and just don't have time for some of the bigger projects. It's always good to have this honesty with viewers though, it gives them an insight into why we have to have sponsored segments and maybe cover topics that are more likely to be trending. @@dirg3music I feel like that's a lot of what pushes those platforms algorithms to be so powerful: shorter videos means more engagement data, not to mention that the videos are served immediately instead of a preview, so the algorithm can learn a lot. The problem with this is that you're going to get all of the content that you engage with whether you like it or not, whether it makes you feel good or bad and whether it's something you would choose to watch or not. It's not likely that you're going to click on a KZfaq video thumbnail for something that you won't enjoy or will make you upset, or a video with 32 views from a creator you don't know. On a video per video basis I would say that KZfaq serves me videos more relavant to what I enjoy but that's also because I enjoy a lot of things that can only really exist in a long format.

Dude, you have a wicked channel and a huge base of loyal fans! Just as an asside and as an idea I had a while back can you look into a couple of collaboration bits with other channels and teams? I wondered if maybe there was a decent sized group (sort of like a crazy union type thing) of cool and genuine retro content creators you would have more sway and clout when dealing with the mega-strength of KZfaq bureaucracy! 👊😎 Be strong, stay safe and look after yourself dude.

Thank you for making this video. KZfaq is one day going to find themselves without any content, and I look forward to that day. They're a disgusting monopoly, and they abuse their power. I have dreamed for years of starting my own channel about retro computing, but as I watch you and other creators in that space struggle and deal with these kind of issues, it has made me all but abandon that dream because why make videos no one will ever see? Why subject myself to the stress of constant worry that a video could randomly cause me a strike or other problems with no explanation? We need a better platform. I love your content, and always have ever since I discovered your channel years ago.

In one regard I want to almost say I'm glad to see this video, NN - as in, when your output noticeably dropped since around the start of the year, I did fear it was because all wasn't good elsewhere in your "real life" and you might be on the verge of pulling out due to that. Now seeing this it makes far more sense as to why. One of the reasons I've always liked the channel is for the sheer level of quality and passion you do it with. For myself, who has so often gone to dip my toe in online output only to be TOO much of a perfectionist and step away for not just wanting to put out any old tat, I can well relate to the burnout it can cause - so when KZfaq don't even "play ball" with that, instead putting their promoting weight against absolute rubbish based on 0s and 1s in algorithms, that's just gonna take the fun out of it all. I've always enjoyed the varied by "on a technical theme" content of the channel, from the mostly older hardware stuff, to the more recent "tech-related mysteries" stuff; I think the variety keeps things fresh and can relate that again like myself, you go for stuff that hold your particular interest at the time, hence the level of passion and dedication that goes it to put out quality video(s) on the subject. I'm noticing a number of the channels I follow currently see to be making their voice hear over similar discontent with KZfaq, and can only hope that eventually, all those voices will form enough mass for YT to finally listen and address the issue. As it currently stands, it feels almost as if they're working against themselves, blindly backing the wrong horses bases on broken algorithm reasonings and only serving to drive people away as a result, which is such a shame.

I originally subscribed to your channel for the "messing about with old computers and playing games" content, but am also very happy with the newer 'subject documentary' type content. One of my favourite videos was the 'keyboard in the concrete' one, which was meticulously researched and entertaining. The recent Max Headroom and Evil Bert videos. At the end of the day, do what makes you happy. Some people may moan and drop off, but others (whose primary interest may not be old computers from their school days) will find you and the numbers will more than balance out.

I’ve seen so many great creators vanish from the platform over the past 2-3 years, seemingly because it’s become so difficult to get noticed and build a decent subscriber base now. The influx of mediocre new channels by people in the position to just spunk vast amounts of cash at grabbing subs, and taking out ad space on others videos! is pretty depressing. For regular folk with the passion and talent getting to that point where you make enough income to drop your regular job and have the time to put more in to the content, has gone for a hop, skip and jump to a gaping chasm. I have to go digging for those good new channels now instead of them popping up as recommended like they used to, my KZfaq recommended list is largely populated with garbage.

People think that making good content will get them views not realizing how much competition there is for views. There are only so many eyeballs to go around and everybody wants to do it because they think it's easy and glamorous. It's even harder when in a small niche like retro tech, not a whole lot of people watch this type of stuff anyway. It takes a lot and many great creators don't ever quite 'make it' like they'd wish but they need to remember why they started and not just do it for the fame and the money. If you can do what you want and make a living off it then you have made it.

This is why I feel it is so important to have multiple streams of income from multiple places… One move from a company could destroy everything you have built… Wish this wasn’t true but it is. I wish you all the best going forward, and don’t get so down on yourself. Just take this bad situation and use it as a way to find a better path. I think what also people forget is this happens in real life to people with “stable jobs” which turn out to not be, or “stable businesses” which are wiped out by some unfair or even illegal competition from overseas who stole your product design, and the list goes on… the only way to counter this is to fight back by diversifying and as someone such as yourself who has fans/viewers, by having a way to contact them with something like a newsletter so that if anything were to happen to a platform like KZfaq you still have a way to contact your most loyal fans… Diversifying is just not even an option in life anymore… It always sucks when you find out just how disposable you are to every company and platform in this world. Sadly you have to treat every source of income as if it could crash and burn over night. There is no loyalty anymore, if it truly even existed in the first place. Don’t get so discouraged though, you have some amazing talent and I’m sure you will find a way to work around this. You make amazing videos, and you have the talent to find a way to grow your income through diversifying in all aspects of your business! Sometimes you have to change the way you play the game, sadly things change in life, and not always for the better. Beware good sir, as perfection is never attainable is ultimately the enemy of progress. It''s one thing to desire quality and improvement, but attempting to attain perfection will always lead to frustration and anger. The quality of your videos have improved greatly over the years, yet I do agree that your channel has grown more 'distant'. Which I've grown to expect as a friendly voice becomes a group of voices which becomes and endless sea of people as a channel grows. The one nice thing about smaller videos though is that if one fails and another one is already in the pipeline, it may not hurt as much financially. The trick is balancing quality and quantity. I know that saying "click the notification bell" is a cliché and I know that it probably does help the channel. There's one thing that creators need to understand though: I. Don't. Want. The. Notifications. A lot of people don't. We get innundated with notifications on our phones anyway. Even if I love a channel and want to help it out I'd rather set up a monthly donation on patreon or (my preferred way) pay for Premium than click that bell. I use the subscriptions tab and I'm subscribed to few enough channels and watch KZfaq regularly enough to not miss any new stuff. In fact I turned notifications completely off. I know that KZfaq would really really like it if anyone used their app and used their stupid front page with their trending garbage and useless suggestions and clicked all the bells but there are still a lot of people left who are like me and don't like stuff being forced on them.

This has nothing to do with an algorithm, rather it’s just human nature. We humans have a tendency to give more importance to negative experiences than to positive or neutral experiences. This is called the “negativity bias”. We even tend to focus on the negative even when the negative experiences are insignificant or inconsequential. So people just gravitate towards negative youtube videos or negative titles/clickbait more than positive, and the algorithm just adapted to this natural human quark.

A video where someone is in some sort of crisis such as leaving their workshop or leaving KZfaq always gains clicks. Scotty Kilmer is always creating click bait like "Why Ford will never make another car" but that's become a bit of a joke, his personal style. As for the algorithm, I really hate it even though I'm not anywhere near a huge creator but I hope things get better for you.

To be honest, I could just listen to you tell me stories about the history of clogs. You have a very cool way of explaining things. I watch everything you put up because it’s just so well done. Even if I’m not actually interested in the topic. I just hope you can find a way forward to keep you ( and us) happy. You’re an amazing creator.

Very sorry to hear this. This channel is in my top 5 KZfaq channels and I was so glad to see some new content of late ,always well put together and entertaining. My favourite has to be the ghost in the machine episode -not sure of the title but it was a fascinating story.Hope you reconsider or at best continue on some other platform. The world really does need Nostalgia Nerd.🧀🧀🧀

Its definitely distressing how so many of the KZfaqrs I once knew and watched have left because of algorithm BS. Especially since this kind of stuff is what I enjoy. I guess that era is coming to an end and boy does it suck.

Sorry to hear you've gone through the ringer a bit of late! Glad you've taken some time to get things better for you. I've seen so many channels having random content ID or age-restriction problems for no reason (see FranLab's endless issues!) but "samm channel" youtube is where I spend so much of my time these days; you and so many other channels (a LOT of the ones you've tagged) make it feel like I'm in a comfy internet corner in the garden on the big WorldWideWeb party, so thank you for laways being yourself.

Sorry to hear you've had issues with the algorithm. For what it's worth, my all time favorite video of yours was the retrospective on DMA. You really do a great job of analyzing older programs and/or companies.

“I’ve lost my patience with KZfaq” would had been a less click bait title. I get you wanted us to see what’s going on with KZfaq’s flawed flagging system and algorithm so it’s cool. I see a lot of smaller channels I watch have the same issues. The bigger channels try and create basically TV shows and have an office dedicated to their content which to me ruins the point of KZfaq. It’s annoying that every channel now has to resort to sponsorships and some channels will have multiple ads while others will have zero. It also sucks I can’t find many smaller uploaders because KZfaq’s search leads me to the same ones every time and my feed is filled with videos I already watched.

I hate titles like this because it makes me sad that they are quitting. No shade at him using the title though, it just makes me shit myself when I see titles like that

I just recently found your channel and truly enjoy the new videos. Really well done and enthralling. I ended up binge watching many more videos on your channel. I enjoy it all but I will say that the newer content may have a larger audience because I am somewhat IT capable which is why I may have enjoyed the newer content but honestly what do I know :). I hope you are able to get into the algorithms favor again, your content is amazing!

Awwww, dude! Love your channel, I was worried you were chucking it in! There’s hope yet though, so many people are pissed off at KZfaq, something will have to change soon!
