February 10th, 2000.
This was SUPPOSED to be one of the best days in Cincinnati Reds history…Ken Griffey Jr. The Michael Jordan of baseball. The man who literally saved baseball for the city of Seattle! … KEN GRIFFEY JR WANTED to come to the small market Cincinnati Reds. He wanted to go home. He wanted to be happy...
We know how this story goes... Anger, bitterness, disappointment. That’s all that surrounds this topic to this day. Justifiably so!
But what if I told you that Griffey Jr’s time in Cincinnati WASN’T the failure we remember it as, but his homecoming? Was actually a success!
Join me! As we have the biggest good vibe challenge yet. Looking back, do all of the positives? The story. The buzz. The numbers. The MOMENTS! Including a neat Jay Bruce story… Oh yeah! We can’t forget the Mariners perspective too!
But do all of these positives make Ken Griffey Jr’s 8+ years in Cincinnati actually…a success??
What do you think? Was Griffey Jr's time in Cincinnati a SUCCESS? Or should the Reds have never pulled the trigger on the deal? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate you all!
Be sure to SUBSCRIBE if you haven't! Cheers!

Griffey Sr. used to live down the street from one of my friends when we were growing up. One day, Sr. was outside doing stuff in his yard when my friend and I walked over to his house. He stopped and talked to us and gave us each a can of coke. The Griffey's are beloved in Cincy to this day.

I remember reading how Dad got three WS rings with the Reds (75, 76. 90) and Junior hoped to get at least one of his own...but sadly he never got to appear on the big stage. And in fact the Mariners still remain the only MLB team to never appear in a World Series.

I grew up in southern Indiana and never embraced the Reds teams even though all their games were televised. They had some great players that stayed in the small market longer than anyone would expect. Griffey being there can only be viewed as a positive in my book even if the stats weren't what they used to be!

For those wondering what a Griffey to the Mets trade would've been, the reported deal was Octavio Dotel, Armando Benitez and Roger Cedeno for him. And according to Griffey, had the Mets not rushed a decision out of him, he may have talked himself into going to the Mets.

As someone who grew up in the PNW and was 11 when Griffey was traded, you Reds fans got a steal regardless of WS rings or not. So heartbreaking as a child to lose Griffey Jr like that. 😆

I think Junior remaining in center for as long as he did was an artifact of pre-analytics baseball, and certainly didn't help the injury woes. I do worry for Trout in this respect, I don't think playing balls-to-the-walls defense in center every day is going to be the best way to preserve his natural talent in years to come.

Griffey Jr wasn't a failure with the Reds. The Cincinnati Reds are the oldest franchise in the MLB. For Griffey to put up the stats that he did despite dealing with multiple injuries shows you how great a player he was.

122 OPS+ is good, not great. That’s basically what Bernard Gilkey was for the Cardinals and not a single person considers his Cardinal career to be great.

Calling Junior the “Michael Jordan of baseball” is sheer blasphemy. Michael Jordan is the GOAT by every non longevity measure. How many rings did Griffey Jr win? He was the best player in the game maybe 2 years in a row. One of those years he may not have even been the best player on his team.

He was the face of baseball well into his prime much like Jordan was for basketball …all rings aside

@@enoso2447 maybe Jordan’s first 5 years in the league or so. Then Jordan soared to be the GOAT and Junior regressed to becoming a fringe All Star who couldn’t even make the playoffs.

Baseball is harder for one player to make a big enough difference to win a title. Basketball you can do it with one good player like Michael Jordan, or Hakeem Olajuwon but baseball you need the entire team to be solid.

Considering Jordan’s stats as a baseball player, it’s insulting to call Griffey the Jordan of baseball
