It’s about fighting mental health. It’s invisible. It’s not easy to understand. I’m crying all over again.

The monster represents depression. The monster only you can see. This episode is beautiful. It’s a spot on depiction of bipolar, both mania and depression. The monster is necessary, because it’s showing us not only the monster not being seen but the monster itself is made of panic and fear and it’s lashing out in fear.

One of the few episodes, maybe the only one in all of Doctor Who, that has a suicide hotline disclaimer on it. Kicks you in the chest. I love that they didn't belittle the idea of a manic depressive, that all he needed was someone to say nice things to him and it would be over. If only it took a good hug and an I love you. Having dated a severely depressed girl in my early 20s I can speak from first hand experience... Sometimes there's just nothing you can do. Nothing you say, no matter how from the heart or positive, will cheer them up. I watched this episode with her, and I couldn't help but connect the dots.

the reason its relevant that Richard Curtis - from Love actually - wrote this ep. is because his sister committed suicide after a long battle with mental illness and this was his way of processing it not only for the audience but for himself

Such a fantastic episode. Fun fact, when they're in the museum, one of the paintings VIncent looks at is by a contemporary.

From what i can remember when the episode aired here in the UK national suicide hotline was shown at the end with the website and it was at this point when reality started to blend in with Doctor Who. almost like a 'oh shit' moment

Van Go in America because of total ignorance. Van Gogh in England because of partial ignorance, Fan Ghogh in the Netherlands because they know.

This episode made me want to learn more about Van Gogh. And that musical track Chances by Athlete... just perfect. Tony Curran was superb and Bill Nighy was spot on.

Same here. The final scene can be a bit difficult sometimes, but also cathartic, suffering from very bad episodes myself. I tend to bottle up emotions which can be self-destructive. Tony Curran is just incredible as Vincent.

Van Gogh is a Dutch name pronounced guterally like khokh, that's hard for English speakers, goff, is the closest we get. Calling him Go is miles off.

This is one of the few series that gets the depiction of severe clinical depression spot on, speaking as someone who suffers from SCD, this, and South Park’s “You’re getting Old”

Ah, the days when "Doctor Who" could tell a great story and convey a gut-wrenching message without being preachy or in your face about it. Great script, great direction, and able to bring the tears. Long gone.

What bothers me is the Krafayis was blind and in a foreign world and Vincent killed it when all it was trying to do was hide itself from the human monsters it couldn't see, and it died afraid and alone - so the Doctor remarks he didn't enjoy winning. Honestly, it seems pretty sick to me

Vincent literally said he didn't mean to kill it and how sorry he felt for it because he knows what it's like to feel alone and unseen. It was hurting people and was left behind by its own kind. Putting it out of its misery was for the best, don't ya think? Because if you say no, that means you'd be okay with it continuing to live being a danger to itself and others and constantly lonely. You act as if its death was morally wrong regardless. How would you have helped it then? If Vincent didn't do that, how many more people would be gone? It wasn't its fault, but it still did those things, and those things would continue to happen because its pack would never come back to take it home. No matter what, what happened was for the best overall. The Krafayis finally got to be at peace and the people no longer had to worry about unknown attacks. And why the hell do you say it died alone? It literally died right there with Vincent, the Doctor, and Amy who were comforting it. Your logic is making me very annoyed because it seems you didn't actually pay attention at all.

@@bluewolf2708 I just read the entire transcript to find the one line you're talking about and I found it. But that doesn't change anything that I said at all, none of it. He killed the krafayis and he had never been in the TARDIS up to that point so no translations for Vincent to krafayis, the creature had no idea he didn't want to kill it. It tried to hide from everyone in a church and died afraid, and without anyone that it could feel safe with. What would I have done? I wouldn't have bloody killed it! If I was the doctor I would have taken it somewhere that wasn't France in the bloody TARDIS after I had figured out the problem. But I would never have killed it

This episode was broadcast as part of the BBC’s mental health awareness week. Invisible monster = mental illness. There was a helpline number issued at the end of the episode for those affected by mental illness.

I always, at the very least tear up during that end scene, if not full out cry. I also love the Doctor's metaphor about the pile of good things and bad things. Add to the pile of good things.

The Griff wasn't evil. It was scared and lashing out. If it were scary and a true monster, you don't feel sympathy. He was scared and alone and the Doctor couldn't save it. Sometimes life be like that.

Yes and even scarier the doctor claims at the start "I know evil when I see it", and since he went on to assist in its brutal murder (it was blind and scared, no....petrified) its a startling realisation the doctor doesn't know, he chooses, who deserves to die.

Just fyi, back in 2010, cable provided a descriptor for each episode probably very similar (maybe even exactly the same) to the one you just read 😆 Not always... But, like 90% of the time. So, we weren't often flying blind. Now, in times WAY past, way prior to 2000... yeah. Whole other story. I come from a time where one had to consult the almanac compiled by prophetic seers (aka The TV Guide 🤯🤣)

Love how confident he was with how you pronounce Gogh (both the American and British pronunciations are technically wrong tbh)

I mean, "'gh' is a funny little friend, it's silent in the middle but goes "ff" at the end" 🤷🏼‍♀ I always thought it was Van "go" but after watching this episode tons of times and thinking about it, I'm on the Gogh [goff] side now. I think it's the proper pronunciation and probably what his name originally was.

If I ever have the financial opportunity to support one of the many reactors on youtube, it will be yours, but allas, for now, it's still just 'commenting support' I can give. But I do that with glee!!! About the writer, who obvious is not only a big Doctor Who and Vincent van Gogh fan, he also lost his sister, who suffered with mental illness herself, to suicide, so this was a very personal reason to write this episode. I even understand why the monster wasn't that scary, not (just) for the kids, but because people with depression get scared of things we don't even understand how that could scare them, but for them, that not-so-scary-monster is real angst. For instance, my husband doesn't go out alone, always needs someone with him. The fact that he once traveled alone on a bike, taking a boat to England and cycled to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (yeah, don't read that aloud) in Wales when he was 19 to now only daring to walk to the mailbox because of his angst, is something I can't understand personally, but I do understand it's real for him. Good of you to capture the emotions of Noah and Garrett in close up, Noah's eyes looked more 'glossy' then I have ever seen. And I feel I've always lived by it, but first time I saw it put in the form of the best life/Doctor Who quote ever: “The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”

@WatchWithApollo if you need to trim it a tiny bit do that but put the video on screen but bring the screen down so we can't see like a tiny bit of the bottom but still see the rest that's how other channels have gotten around it like ( king boomer ) look at his videos you'll see what I mean its just a tiny bit like there feet we can't see but we can see from the legs up and you can have the whole video on screen as well as not worry about copyright x
