From growing up in South London to the multiple unsuccessful trials and plans to give up playing, I signed my first professional contract with Crystal Palace a few months before my 22nd birthday. In 1991 I signed for Arsenal Football Club where I scored 185 goals in 288 appearances. I went on to play 581 league games, scoring 387 goals for seven clubs in England and Scotland, earning 33 caps for the English national team.
I am now fortunate enough to have a football broadcast career working for the BBC & ITV.
Some Career Achievements:
185 goals in 288 appearances for Arsenal (2nd all time leading goal scorer)
117 goals in 253 starts for Crystal Palace (leading post war goal scorer)
33 caps for England Men’s National Team
Premier League Winner (Arsenal): 97/98
Premier League Golden Boot (Arsenal): 91/92

BFG will always be remembered for his display at ‘The Mertesaker final’ against Chelsea. I can remember dreading his inclusion in the team after a very long layoff with injury and having to face players like Hazard. But he was exceptional that day, and what a way to sign off.

i used to enjoy the games where the commentary team would big up benteke and BFG would gently scoop him up and put him in his pocket for the afternoon *yes the same benteke who has scored 4 goals in two seasons and is still trading under the title of striker !!! )

Vieira was so, so unique. His technique was absolutely outstanding. He could tackle, run, dribble, shoot, pass, the lot. You could go to war with him or you could play total football. He was a complete one off. When people say Arsenal never replaced Vieira, it's stupid - as Arsene Wenger always used to say, you cannot replace Patrick Vieira. It just can't be done. The captain of the greatest team I ever saw live, and the reason I fell in love with football as a kid, The Invincibles. Seeing Patrick bossing the midfield with those Adidas Predator boots is one of my abiding memories growing up watching the game. Honestly, just a fantastic, fantastic player who we were so lucky to have at the Arsenal.

Thats what i love about Arsenal, its not just any club where people come and go and its just “business as usual”, a bond is created and you join the family. Christian levy said he loves the way per talks and how passionate he is etc, and its so true, but the way i see it per is a guy who came all the way from germany, i dnt even know him to care about Arsenal in any way, but he joined and now look where he is, thats how you know the club is infectious ❤️🤍

I had the privilege to meet Ian here in NYC at a St George's bash where he signed an Arsenal shirt for my son Callum and I can only say that he is as genuine as you see on these wonderful interviews/calls. Vieira is criminally underrated. 3 premier Leagues, 4 FA Cups, 3 Community Shields , 4 Serie As, 2 Supercoppa Italias, 1 FIFA WC, 1 Confed cup, 1 European Championship. Patrick Vieira must appear in each every list of top 10 best players of all time.

Everytime I see Vieira, especially in relation to an Arsenal discussion, I bother a bit about him. He always looks happy though, but I always can't help thinking he might be hurting he hasn't got a statue at the Club. 3 of his teammates have, and he was just as important as all 3.

I had the pleasure of playing for Arsenal youth from age 7-12, back in the 90s - the academy has come a long way. I remember watching Ian Wright training with the youth team in the clock end indoor pitches when he was suspended, I got to chat with him and watch him play up close, one of the best memories of being a young gunner! Big love Ian.
