Jo Firestone (comedian and author of Murder on Sex Island) joins us to share the downsides of puns, writing food jokes, why she isn’t built for life on the road, dissecting the sadness of reality tv shows, Wikipedia-ing the end of scary movies, and self-publishing a book. We’re also joined by guest co-host and The Downside’s theme music composer, Douglas Goodhart.

He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. I cried laughing listening to Jo describe her book tour debacle. Then I lost my mind when you said you were coming to Janesville, my hometown, because I didn't even know they had a comedy scene because wtf why would they. Truly hoping that is not the most disappointing night of your life!!!

I know the frustration of having parents who don’t really show interest, or try. I studied music abroad for several years. My mom listened to part of one song before she interrupted about something completely unrelated. I didn’t demand that she like everything or appreciate it in the same way I do. But three minutes of her time wasn’t too much to ask…was it? When I see people whose parents are enthusiastic, supportive and even curious (!) about what they’re doing, it feels like some impossible fantasy. I also don’t drive and don’t miss it at all. 😂

Been there once when a whole ass performance was happening over a strawberry cheesecake cake ice cream roll. I left without getting anything because my family was impatient. Then I finally get to go again a few years later but they rushed me and asked me what I wanted curtly after 3 secs. I had just told both employees I was only looking at the menu. I ended up with one vanilla scoop it was greasy. I somehow want to go again now.

That beginning about Doctor Phil locking the lady in reminded me of how at church every week the youth pastor gets on stage and says, "So, today we're doing tithe, and we've locked the doors from the outside" and everyone laughs. He's joking, hopefully obviously.

You’re absolutely right about PETA. The organization isn’t the best but there are so many orgs that are worse and just as easy to make fun of. Self-proclaimed “carnivores” get really upset when you confront them with the morality of eating meat.
