AAA means you get a technically impressive game that's full of stats, upgrades, mindless busy work, useless collectables. All they're missing is purpose, fun and interesting gameplay.

I just finished Hotel Dusk on the DS and it was such a good game. Playing older games really does remind you that its not nostalgia. New games feel soulless.

I'm a 61 year old gamer since "Pong", when it was the only game in town. I have reached the same apex with contemporary games. I remember the all-nighters in the 80's of my C-64 games like "Silent Service", "Airborne Rangers" & numerous other extremely immersive yet simplistic graphics & life was good. Today many are jaded & indifferent with so much to experience, which is tragic to realize now.

Every action game is like Souls. Every open world RPG is like Skyrim. Lots of modern games have an hour long tutorial which drains me and when I revisit the game a week or two later I forgot what I learned and don’t want to start over or continue at all.

Last 10 years has seen a consistently slow decline in my interest in modern gaming, especially AAA. And GAAS titles I won't even look at.

41 years old, been playing since Atari and NES in the mid 80s. I totally agree with your sentiments on the current gaming landscape. It feels like companies now aren’t interested in making new and compelling games but making games that our perpetual games that consistently expand overtime like Fortnite or MMO’s or Minecraft or Valant. These games don’t require consistent creativity and continuity. I also hate that everything is online so companies feel OK shipping out buggy broken games with flashy advertisements to entice you to buy them with the idea that they’ll just fix things later (I’m looking at you Anthem, starfield, and No Man’s Sky).

I cancelled my game pass subscription like 4 months ago and not for the same reason that you did. On the flip side, I honestly don't mind games with a lot of side quest bloat. In today's gaming landscape I actually enjoy buying a game (which costs roughly $100 CDN) and spending a month or so with it. I quit Game Pass because there were a bunch of games I wanted to play, but by the time I completed a game the next one I'd want to play was being removed from the service. I don't like having to game on a publisher or corporation's time, I like gaming on my time. I have multiple gaming platforms and simply found it cheaper to buy the games I want outright without having the feeling that I was in a time crunch to complete games. The thing that actually lead me to this is when the service had four Persona games on it at one time. They're 80+ hours and trying to play them all before they left the service lead to major burn out. Instead I bought Persona 3 & 4 for $40 CDN in a Steam Bundle and picked up Royal for like another $30. Now I can enjoy them when I'm ready to and I'm able to play other games I want to in between.

Same here, I’ve lost interest in modern AAA games for a few years, From software games are the only exception, I will still play their games.

My taste over the last +5 yrs. has changed. I realized what I love and what I don’t enjoy. I am having way more fun with my games now.

I started gaming with the Genesis, but for whatever reason, the 360/PS3 era is the perfect sweet spot for me when it comes to playing games. They're dirt cheap, hardware still works well and is easy to find parts for if needed, and I think in terms of graphical fidelity it does exactly *just enough* to where it doesn't feel like you have to forgive it so to speak for being on older hardware. I'll forever think that graphics/art style peaked with Halo 3, there's very few games I truly think look better than it. Gameplay wise, I think this generation of games had such a good mix - Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect, Call of Duty felt fantastic, the Tales series, Forza felt fantastic, games like Crackdown and GTA 4, Dead Space and BioShock - they all laid the foundation for these modern experiences that still stand the test of time.

I just beat Max Payne 1 on PC for the very first time yesterday and had a great time. I can definitely relate to having a lot of fun taking time away from modern triple A to replay old games or play old games for the first time. Its also just made me love Remedy as studio even more, and I continue to gain appreciation for Legacy devs and auters like Sam Lake, Hideo Kojima, Yoko Taro and others for keeping triple A fresh while companies like Microsofy Ubisoft and Activision are hell bent on bringing down the house.

So many great Retro games I’ve yet to play. Happy to play games from 1985 - 2005 on my CRT. I’ll be okay without all the battle passes, patches, dlc, in game stores, etc.

I haven't left the PS2. I have such a huge backlog that I haven't even played modern games or have a gaming subscription.

Tried Game pass for 3 months for like a dollar when it first started. Never went back to it again. I figured in the long run I'm better off buying the games I like physically when they are cheap. Occasionally I'll even buy the same game digitally at rock bottom prices. That way I OWN the game outright both physically and digitally. I don't play online live service games at all because if a game shuts down because no one plays it, or if it needs an online connection, your investment amounts to a useless coaster. Babylon Falls and Redfall (in the future) come to mind. I'm going back to my PS2 and Gamecube collections more and more.

It is very refreshing and reassuring to hear someone like Pete share exactly the same views I have about the status of the industry. I gravitate towards retro more and more.

The only reason I’m not burned out on modern games is that I seem to play slower than a lot of people. I think I’ve only played 7 new games this year and mostly enjoyed them, with the retro backlog making a good supplement.

7th gen was the pinnacle of gaming.

Modern gaming wise I only own a Switch, so this drought Nintendo's in before the new console has been absolutely perfect for retro gaming! I recently bought a PS3 on ebay having played hardly any classic PS2/3 games and have been having a blast. I tried out Jak and Daxter and have been working on the Sly Trilogy HD and the Ratchet and Clank HD collection. I love how simple the games are when you don't have to worry about online connectivity, constant tutorials, and DLC. Just good, clean platforming goodness.

I'd like to say something that will inadvertently hit some people in the heart. But it needs to be said. My late father used to say back around the time the PS2 came out that he enjoyed games to a pretty good degree, but it all became too flashy and busy for him. My late older uncle in fact said the exact same thing. It was, quite literally, too much for him. Right now, 20+ years later, we're slowly starting to say the same things. There's an elephant in the room here that we tend to refuse even exists. We never like to address it and rather blame companies for not being ''able to make games anymore'' or they're not having the passion anymore, or perhaps its ''woke'' culture, capitalism, business practices or social media that ruins ''modern gaming''. But the elephant in the room here is that we too grow older, and we're not 5, 10 or 15 anymore. We're just not into all the new stuff that aligns with our (now older) values. Just like my father wasn't into them anymore 20+ years ago. Our tastes are reminiscent of those times. Back when we thought everything was fine. But even those times had many issues within gaming. We just never noticed them. Not everything needs to appeal to us. It didn't back then either, so why should we now muster up interest? Maybe a bunch of us are simply looking for excuses to refuse and accept the ever-changing world around us. However, it's alright to pivot back into the things we liked when we were younger. Let the world be for a second and focus on yourself.

I've reached weird point in my own gaming. I am 40 years old and my friends and I decided to group up for a weekend, order some pizzas and play old 64 games like GoldenEye and Mario party and all the stuff we used to do in high school. We even set up some Xboxes and had a little halo LAN action And it was fun for what it was. But all of us left feeling like it was going to be a return to form and better... But it wasn't. It actually shown a light on how much more fun games are nowadays. Which leaves me feeling disappointed because we hyped up that weekend for like a month straight before we could all find time in our schedules to get together. And now we're back to doing our weekly online raids in Destiny 2 and messing around in Elden Ring. I too miss the days of beating symphony of the night over the course of a weekend and it's just so hard to recapture that feeling for me these days, but I still do enjoy playing games. Sorry for the long rambling post. I'm just curious if anyone has ever had similar feelings because I can definitely relate to what petes saying in a way too, I just feel gaming's in a weird spot.

You're not the only one, Pete. I'm 24 and I've been struggling to stay optimistic for new games and the modern gaming industry for a few years now. I still play older / retro games on things like the PS1, PS2, PS3, OG Xbox, Xbox360, N64, GameCube and so on and lately I've found myself sticking to them even more so than usual because as of right now, gaming feels like a mess, especially in the Western industry. There are still games that come out that I enjoy every now and then but they feel so few and far between these days. I've been playing Castlevania: Rondo of Blood for the first time and I'm having a great time, it's so simple yet so fun and satisfying, especially overcoming the brutal challenge! Games and the modern gaming industry feel so soulless and empty right now, it feels like the passion just isn't there anymore, especially in the Western industry. I find the Japanese and now South Korean games industry still seem to care about making great games at least which is comforting.

Hey buddy great video and amazing channel, I’m also a content creator here on KZfaq, I love ff7 and I felt the exact same way I did 80 percent of the quests and got burnt out and ended up beating the game and I don’t wanna go back. These new games put way too much filler and overwhelm you with things that’s are really unnecessary. This is why lately I’ve been going back to the older games and the older generation consoles to play the old games that I grew up with. I’m an older gamer I’m in my 40s now so I understand exactly what you’re saying and honestly it feels like gaming is coming to a huge crash and I just don’t have time for filler AAA games any more. I’ve got kids as well so it makes even harder to play these AAA titles .

I had the same exact experience with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. I pre purchased the game digitally and was making plans to no life it until I beat it but when I started playing it, I just couldn't stick with it. My mind would wander and I would just start thinking about playing anything else.

At this point and i swear on this claim, that companies should just continue to develop remakes, ports, classic revivals, 2DHD remasters, ect and that would probably keep the industry affloat even more so then this terrible phone games for kids era that we are currently living, no pashion, no creativity, no vision. I say, If it aint broken, why fix it. Just bring old games back into relevency that were developed by veteren artists and designers, for modern generations to enjoy. Look at well some of these have done from stuff that is brand new like octopath traveler to remakes like dawn of mana, Suikoden hundred heroes, Star ocean 2nd story R, and Dragon quest, to even full blown large scale remakes like FF VII, Resident evil, silent hill. This is what we all want really.

I think games are better now than they´ve been in a long time. The indie scene is packed with everything from retro games building on interesting stuff from the 90s and trailblazing indies that does new and unexpected things. Feels like there´s something cool coming out on a monthly basis. Often it´s almost overwhelming. Currently I´m deeply invested in Indika, Crow Country, Sonar Shock and especially Skald (one of the best RPG´s I´ve played of all time) and I´ve barely scratched the surface. Got Withering Rooms installed on my ps5 and have a bunch of games waiting in line. Meanwhile it´s also easier to play all the legacy games, so we really got everything now.

I went back and B-lined the main Yakuza series from Zero to Infinite Wealth. About a month later, I’ve started to go through the Judgement games. I feel like these days, very few franchises have gotten me interested in playing them day of release, but the franchises that have generally haven’t disappointed me.

Great video, Pete! I’ve not been interested in a lot of newer games these days, which has given me an opportunity to work through games that you could consider as “required reading” for the hobby. It’s been a lot of fun doing this exercise with friends while being very selective with newer games that I decide to pick up.

Okay so I'm not alone here. With all the game announcements this week not really hitting for me I thought I was aging out of games. Monster Hunter and Astro Boy are the only games announced that i really clicked with. The indie scene is way more interesting to me for fresh concepts and stories. I cancelled PSN Plus, Switch Online and Gamepass going basically PC only at this point.

Great video Pete! I feel exact the same, when it comes to modern games. I bought 1 new released game this year for PS5 and for the rest i play a lot off PS2, N64, SNES Dreamcast, PS3 games. Also i'm playing a lot of Switch games, wich is the only current gen console, that really feels like console gaming. Also playing older games on the Steamdeck is a lot off fun.

I feel where you're coming from with modern gaming. It is a culmination of things for me. Between online only/free to play games, microtransactions, games missing features/content, being buggy and unfinished, games not on the disc. I have to do so much research before I buy a game now.

The biggest issue I have with modern games is not the games themselves. It’s the time we live in. Social media has flushed us with so much information about so many games. Most of my gaming experience is simply “I want to beat this game.” It’s not immersion but just to know what it’s about and having finished it so I can get to the next game on an almost endless list. When I was a kid or teen, I had less choices and also less media telling me about all my options, so I focused in on the 6-7 games I got each year from holidays or through borrowing from a friend. I missed out on 90% of games that came out, but I didn’t have the same level of FOMO, because it wasn’t in my face daily about what else is out there I haven’t got to yet.

I understand how you feel, for me one of the biggest issues with modern gaming is setting aside 100 hours to play a specific game. For example I really like to Final Fantasy seven rebirth and I did all the side quest but it took me over 100 hours to beat the game and I’m probably never going to play it again, mainly because of how long it took to beat. I think back to some of my favorite RPG’s like Lunar the silver star i beat it at least 20 times on the Sega CD and 10 times on the PS1 and once on the Japanese Saturn. The thing about the game is it’s not super long and it’s not short it’s just right. I would recommend that you check out a game called Steller Blade it’s on PS5 it’s a action game and there are some side quest but it’s not overwhelming and it can take you anywhere from 15 hours to 30 hours to be depending on how you choose to play it. Check out the review and some gameplay you might be interested

I’m feeling the same. I really enjoy retro more and more as we slip into this period of gaming. I like Nintendo because they respect my time by creating consoles in the traditional mode of turn it on and play within 30 seconds.

I totally see your opinion and did a great job at articulating your perspective. I for one wish I could simply go back play old games. There's just too many quality of life changes that have occurred over the year to go back to old games for me. I'm also one of those guys who gets bothered by repeating the low points or more boring aspects of games or even movies or even just parts of media I don't find as good as other parts. I do like discovering new stuff on GamePass, that's the biggest selling point for me and the smaller indie stuff they throw on there each month

I've moved over to Indy games a lot myself, I like that they seem to bring more old-school type games but update them with modern conveniences. But I have slowed down in general, Feels like theirs too much going on and too big of a financial commitment for it. Fun vid. :)

Been there for a while now and I am absolutely loving diving headfirst into retro and discovering awesome “new to me” stuff. Especially now that prices are starting to come back down to earth (at least on the local buy and sells that I use)

definitely understand being turned off by the towers in Rebirth, but after the first area's tutorials almost all of the side content in the game is optional. I will say that a large majority of the side content genuinely feels rewarding to play, but I get not wanting to do that stuff and just wanting the main story- which Rebirth lets you do if you want. turns it from like a 110 hour game into a 50-60 hour one lol. either way, good vid Pete and glad to see you posting!

I understand how you fell. I would love all my old games made with love like how they did from back in the day! I mean imagine new game called Metal Gear 0 w/ ps1 graphics, that has the same impact we had as a kid. No dlcs, complete game jus add updates. Also make tons of secrets/easter eggs and cheats codes that take years to figure out and spend all the time on gameplay idc about graphics nowadays smh

Hey Pete. I'm glad to see that you're still uploading videos. This is Doug from SBU. Not sure if you remember me. I've been in Japan for 10 years now! I had the same exact experience as you with FF7 Rebirth. Games are just way too bloated these days and I have very limited time to play because I have two small children. I gave up on FF7 Rebirth about 8 hours in and instead started playing Skies of Arcadia again but this time in Japanese. So much more fun and straightforward. I'm happy with just playing SNES to PS2 era JRPG's these days! And like you said, just 10 hour so games that can be beaten over a weekend. Hope you're doing well!!

You made this video when i started a new game of Fallout 4 after spending 180hrs in Rebirth, and I'm now over 100hrs in F4 and I've just finished doing stuff in Goodneighbor! I've also installed Far Harbour and Nuka World which I've never played, so I've got plenty to do for a while haha

As usual your takes are spot on and pretty relatable. There are so many trends about modern AAA gaming that are grating; the open world frictionless Ubisoft template, design by committee and wokeism, bloated and overlong dev cycles, too many remasters/remakes/reboots, evergreen Shartnite and mobile slop that negatively affect real games too (buy your kids Nintendo games, parents). Still, there are more good games than I'm able to play through in a timely fashion between newer AAAs, AAs, indies, retro games and a MMO on the side. If I were only going from AAA to AAA release or the latest Twitch flavor of the month streamer bait I'd probably be more genuinely despondent. It's not even really a practical problem but it stills affects the discourse around gaming and the "hype cycle" for new games very negatively. The last State of Play for example was all in all very disappointing except Astro Bot. There were like three Chinese F2P/gacha games there, like WTF are they even doing.

I've always been the sort of guy who buys a new console ~2-3 years after release, and the vast majority of new games I buy are on sale. I really wanted to play Dragon's Dogma 2 on launch, but because of the release timing I had to choose between that and Rebirth. And I can't be bothered with the online subscriptions for any of these platforms because there's literally no value in it for me. I generally don't play online games, and the games I do play tend to take me longer than a month to finish anyway. Access to something like GamePass or NSO would be wasted on me.

I have been playing PS2 games like Tenchu, Sly Cooper,007,Prince of Persia. Games that take maybe 5+ hours to beat instead of 20+.

I totally feel the same. I was actually thinking about this the other day while in the shower. I thought about how back in the day, you really didn't know what type of game you were going to get when buying them. Sure, we had magazines and early forums to discuss it but it was a surprise and the majority of the time, original ideas. These days, yes the graphical ability of video games have advanced exponentially, thr majority are copying each others concept and while I don't mind developers taking inspiration from other games, when you do it excessively like today's market has done, nothing becomes exciting to play. Nothing feels like a surprise anymore. Even when trying to avoid the internet and spoilers for a new release, you kinda already know what to expect. "It will have a cover system like X game, an inventory system like Y game and a story like Z game." We don't have any innovation anymore and it seems like indie developers are taking that torch to make original ideas that triple A devs won't do anymore but it doesn't benefit us older gamers because indie is always small scale. People talk bad about CyberPunk but at least they took some chances. Tried something different and it was demonized because of it, obviously because of quality issues. It scares studios to take risks and they stick to what makes money. I miss the old days...

I'm moving further and further away from modern games also. Been playing a lot of PS2/PS3 lately. It just feels like back in those years (and even older), games were made by gamers. Now it doesn't feel like that. People talk about nostalgia, but it's not even that. I never played Ratchet or Sly back in the day, or Resident Evil 4 or Onimusha, but playing them now, they feel so refreshing, simple, and honestly just way more fun to play. In fact, this weekend me and a friend played Mario Kart Double Dash on game cube for 3 hours and we were having a blast.

Beyond Good & Evil is a not bad to play. Glad you are focusing more on retro gaming. I should do the same, while also go back to PC gaming.

I’ve always been about retro games so I don’t consider myself receding back into them because I’ve always been playing them along with modern games..but I understand you Pete I feel the same way..I’m not a fan of physical games being ignored and also I would love more 3D platformers from the bigger companies..true AAA titles..I know that Astrobot is coming out I’m actually looking forward to that for the same reason you mentioned..glad you at least are still enjoying many retro games while looking forward to some upcoming ones 👍🏼

44 y/o here. I went from NES>SNES>PS1 and went cold for a looooong time, reemerging with Covid unemployment checks, haha. I have a Wii, DS, SNES Classic and Genesis Classic. I've researched and researched making a more modern console my 'centerpiece' but nothing serves enough other than just MORE. Meanwhile, scheduling my play time is difficult enough for my 180 game total collection. So now, with the promise of physical media collapse, I'm happy to partake in my oldies with zero paywalls and casual play for the big 3-letter word that is too often forgotten: FUN.

Man, everything you said hits home with me. It's the reason ANY of us still pickup and play and enjoy the classic games. They're complete and work right out of the box, they're fun and never lost focus of the purpose of the game. I can't remember the last time I bought a new game that didn't require some gigantic day one update because the game practically shipped unfinished. Then, when you do finally begin playing, they don't let you just enjoy the damn game. They have to spam you with a ton of crap and side quests to do that you just feel overly stimulated and are left wondering, "what the heck should I really be doing?!?" Then to top it all off, they've lost sight of the entire purpose of the game, the FUN...They're simply just not fun to play anymore. The reason for you to not want to put down the controller because you're simply having a great time, is just not there anymore. I purchased an Xbox Series X and I sometimes wish I never bothered. I've had it for close to 3 years now and I'm yet to purchase anything specifically designed for that console other than Hogwarts Legacy, which was actually a purchase for my WIFE who's a huge Harry Potter fan and even she couldn't finish the game because (and I $hit you not) she feels overwhelmed when playing it. She's a non "gamer", so that right there speaks volumes to me...

Playing black ops 1 every week. It’s crazy how well it holds up. The cod games lost its soul once they went the realistic graphics route in 2019. And yes retro is king. F modern games

Since last year I've been playing 60% Retro, 30% Backlog and 10% modern games. Most new games just suck. Very few games like FF16, FF7R, Stellar Blade, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Armored Core and Baldur's Gate have gotten my attention.

My ADHD keeps me from completing most games. I've been gaming for over 4 decades and still love games. Looking back, I couldn't wait until game's got to this point. I do feel like a lot of games feel soulless nowadays and just thrown together without any love put into their crafting. I still hold onto hope though.😊 I love running around in beautiful worlds others created knowing that if I die, I can just press continue.❤ Happy to see you're still making videos Pete.🎉

I was very out of touch with the modern games industry a little while ago, but this year and next has some pretty great stuff on the horizon. My watch list is huge now. Ironically, the thing I'm most excited for is Kingdom Heart on Steam - a remaster of a 20 year old game that already came out on PC a few years ago. Even more ironically, I've only played Pokemon Red on my gameboy colour in the last couple of weeks...I'm starting to feel like I enjoy being excited for a new game more than I actually enjoy playing them. Doesn't help that I am an insanely nostalgic person

I’ve not had the motivation to finish recent releases but I force my self too. I’ve recently played through Dead Rising for the first time and loved it. I’ve tried playing it on 360 back then but thought it was too hard. I finally figured out how your meant to play it.

Same here man. I've been a gamer since I was like 6. I'm 37 now and I think realize that I'm not the target demographic anymore and gaming is no longer for me. I don't but microtransactions, I don't buy season passes. The past year I don't find myself playing many games made after 2015 unless it's a remake. The resident evil remakes are awesome.

I hooked up my N64 a few weeks ago and have been so entertained by it! So many fun classics to play!

You I’m so happy to be a slow/patient gamer. I beat 2 games last year. RE4 remake and Tears of the Kingdom. This year I’m soaking in Baldurs gate 3. I’ve got a back log with some awesome games I look forward to diving into at my own pace. Not spending $70 on modern AAA games to then get heart broken. I’ve got Persona 5, Witcher 3, Bioshock, Deadspace, Metro Exodus, Far Cry 2. All on my list. So excited! Playing at my own pace Makes me cherish and soak everything thing in.

I'm exactly the same. Quit my GamePass when I realised I have a huge Steam backlog to get through. I was only playing MS Flight Sim though it so decided to "save" my monthly sub to get that when it's on sale, which it is now. I'm done with subscription services generally now.

I have such a big backlog of games so I've been loving having a slower last year or two. Plus indie games have been killing it.

what's your impressions on Xbox Showcase? Did you watch it?

I have been having more fun with my Ps2 and N64 than anything modern.

I've been playing videogames for over 30 years now. I do see this general turn towards giving players huge checklists vs. just naturally exploring in AAA games. I would like this stuff to be more optional going forward so it does not prey on your brain as much and leaves you open to explore what are often really beautifully realized 3D spaces. At the same time, I often watch my girlfriend, who is a less experienced player, play the same games with a more open mindset and she tends to explore the world first before even realizing the structure of the goals. So I think it is more me being instantly aware of the games structure and wanting to do well that stands in the way of freely exploring and enjoying myself. Also fueled by the want to get the most out of the game for the time I have to play it.

Currently playing FFVII on my Vita going for level 100o or 99 run and have no problems just betting on Chocobo races or breeding them to break the pace. Let me tell you something. I am older or we are about the same age. I feel you. Back in the days getting to that next town was a reprieve and pay off during the story. Today it just feels like busy work in a virtual world world. I hate that too. Basically graphics don't make a game when Starfield is less good than No man's sky on Switch right? Love that game today. I could go on but you get the gist ;).
