I'm Making French Cleat Tool Holders! Tool Holder for Multiple Hand Tools. Scroll Saw Holder

I love making French cleat tool holders! Welcome to part 1 of 2 videos where I build 5 French cleat tool holders! My garage workshop is slowly coming together and I recently built this French cleat wall to store all, or at least most of my tools. Check out that video as well…..it’s a must see!
Is there a better way than French cleat storage solutions? I say there is not! In this video you get to see me build a tool holder for my Ryobi 18 gauge brad nailer, Ryobi 16 gauge finish nailer, and scroll saw holder. I also made a really cool tool holder for multiple hand tools and accessories. It has dividers to keep them all organized and separated. I don’t show this in the video but afterwards I went and made even smaller dividers for the really small tools like my mini screw drivers. I even put storage shelves underneath the holder for the scroll saw and for the multiple tool holder.
Of course this is a video about how to make 5 French cleat tool holders, but I only make 3 in this video and show off a 4th (16 gauge finish nailer). Be on the lookout for my next video in which I will be showcasing the build of 2 more tool holders………….and don’t be surprised if I throw in a bonus tool holder for the diehards out there.
The great thing about having a French cleat storage system is that I get to build all sorts of different tool holders. I love the creativity it allows and the diversity of tool holder options. The holders can be very versatile yet inexpensive at the same time. Most can be made of scrap wood. It’s nice to be able to clear up some of that clutter!
Since these French cleat holders are just for storing my tools it allows me to make them really fancy, or just plain and simple. Since they will be hanging in my garage, they will be covered in dust most of the time from all of my other projects. How do I clean them? Just spray them with air from my air compressor! And then magically brand new again.

I like that you show your ‘miscalculations’ and rather than throw the wood in the fire box, you show your adjustments to make it work. New subscriber. I have the same table saw and was very disappointed the auger is too short for dado stacks! Nice projects! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for subscribing and welcome to the family! The tough part is choosing which of my many mistakes to showcase. If I showed all of them the videos would be way too long. I’m working on a power tool charging station right now for the cleat wall that I’m pretty pumped about. It’s pretty unique compared to the other stuff out there on KZfaq....in my opinion. So keep an eye out for that one! I definitely could have used a dado stack for that project!

@@DudeSawdust I’ll keep my eye out for the charging station because I had found one on another channel, so I built it but I really don’t care for it so it’ll be great to see what you’ve dreamed up! I wish I’d known about the table saw when I bought it...because I’d have opted for the one with the longer arbor to accommodate dato stacks...I guess it’s more inconvenient than anything else...but I hate having to hit precise marks when a dato stack would nail it in one cut and no worries!! 👍🏻🇺🇸

@@keithrayeski3147 I'll give you a teaser....It has side mounting for the power tools, hidden wires with grommets, storage shelf with magnetic opening hinged door, recessed hidden magnets for sticking your favorite bits for quick and easy access. It's a small charging station but I don't have a ton of drills like some of these other woodworkers. Another thing I'm doing is painting it to match the tools. Hopefully it will be done this week, got delayed having to reorder the magnets.

When building the accessory box for your brad nailer ( 1:48 ), if you had cut the dados before cutting it in two to make the sides, the dados would have been level. Measure twice cut once, apart from that hiccup, you made a good job.

Thanks, never even considered the scroll saw. Only thing I didn't care for was the volume on the music. Had me popping back and forth on the volume knob. I'd appreciate lower volume on music. It's you I really wanted to hear. Thanks again

Really like the content, but your volumes need to be normalized- the music is WAAAY too loud, I’m riding the volume knob all the way through and it’s kinda frustrating with the kid in bed- i can’t hear what your saying!

Never saw a razer blade and hammer trick before....nice! Agreed you must think about the ancillary items like the nails.... very nice holder for the nailers. Also thinking similar, have a small garage in so cal, hang less used item higher. You have great ideas! Thanks!

Very creative ideas. You are spot on to show your mistakes and how you resolved them. Anyone getting into this hobby or line of work and expecting perfection from the start is delusional, lol. Take it from me, after 50 years, I still occasionally make mistakes. I too like that the accessories for each tool are alongside them. The holder for the wrenches, screwdrivers, and other hand tools might become an issue. It sticks out too far from the wall and you or your son that popped up earlier ;>) is going to hit it. Just a word of caution, for any holders lower than your head, be mindful of that possibility. Looking forward to part two!

Thanks so much for watching! Yes, I'm a huge fan of the cleat system. I made those holders about 2 years ago and they have held up well. The the tool holder that sticks out far actually hasn't been a problem at all. I was concerned like you that I might run into it. But since I have hung it over to the side it has not been a problem. Fortunately my garage shop is not a tight space which helps as well. I intend to make more tool holder builds in the future. Cheers!

Welcome to the trade/hobby! I’m glad you like the circular saw holder. Unfortunately I did not make a video on it. Nor do I have plans. It’s a pretty simple build. I bet if you just customize something to the size of your saw and let it sit at 45 degree angle with a slot for the blade to sit in and storage for blades underneath….then that is pretty much what I built. Thanks! So far I’m using my right lung for dust collection. But I have a laundry list of hopes and dreams. I have a small space so I don’t quite know yet. I’ve got 2shop vacs that get connected to my power tools. If you follow my channel you’ll probably see a little of this and that.

@@DudeSawdust I just made a DIY cyclone style separator out of a 5 gal bucket to save my shop vac filter from getting clogged super fast. I've been real happy with it. For power tools, shop vacs actually work better than dust collectors because they move a smaller amount of air, but faster.

@@DudeSawdust LOL!! Let me guess...the left lungs 🫁 for exhaust!!🤣 I’m guessing a lot of us are in the same position...trying to fit everything in smaller spaces. Dust collection has ALWAYS been the evil woodworkers fight!! I remember my dads big ole HarborFreight system with PVC pipes everywhere!! It never did work to his satisfaction... I think it would have been more effective if he’d had blast gates...didn’t think of it then and there was no KZfaq then...I think today he’d do it different...then again, I hope my son learns from my mistakes!! So far, he’s doing well at 40!!😁

A hint for cutting thin shims is to us a sacrificial put a pice of blue tape over the blade opening then run the blade u through it.

@@chashaycock5924 I think is you are joining two 3/4 ply then 1 1/4 is perfect. If you use 1 1/2 then it will poke through the other end. You want your nail head to be just below the surface. Aiming for flush just puts you at risk for it being just proud. Then chase it with wood filler

First time watching your videos. Nice work good video! My only feedback is the volume going up and down I found very irritating. I found myself turning the volume up to hear you talk then get blasted by the music. But it sure got me thinking about what tools I can actually mount up on my wall. Especially the likes of a scroll saw. 👍

Hej Dude, thanks for your video. Nice work! How do you call the wood plates in your country. Here in Germany it‘s named Multiplex. But your individual layers looks a little bit more thick than ours.

The outer layers of plywood are known respectively as the face and the back. The face is the surface that is to be used or seen, while the back remains unused or hidden. The center layer is known as the core. In plywoods with five or more plies, the inter-mediate layers are known as the crossbands.

Also, pine plywood (what I used) has thicker layers. If I would have used a higher end plywood like Baltic birch the layers would have been thinner. We usually just call the layers “ply” or “plys”.

This video came up in a search for French cleat ideas and your tool holders are good. Unfortunately, the unnecessary music is far louder than the voice segments. Since I tend to look at KZfaq for ideas after everyone else has gone to bed, I have to ride the volume control constantly to keep from waking others.

I have to apologize to all of the sleeping family members out there. I have had several comments about his problem. This was one of my very first videos and I had difficulty honing the volume to be just right. I feel confident that I have improved my editing skills in my more recent videos. nobody but nobody addresses the issue of shop dust covering your cleat items. Cabinets with sliding doors will solve the problem. Your thoughts

Shop dust is unavoidable. Here's what I like to do. Wait for a day with a breeze in the right direction. Open the garage door and the back door of the garage that goes into the back yard. It creates a wind funnel. Then get a blower and blow off the dust off of everything. It all funnels out the back door. Also, Hopefully in the not too distant future I plan on building cabinets on the wall left of my french cleats.

Hi, When you have something to say I want to hear it. Musical interludes, not so much. When you speak I have to double the volume to hear you because I have to cut the volume in half when the music plays. I haven’t checked later because I can’t adjust the volume fast enough. I like your channel, but I don’t like riding the volume. Thanks and here’s hoping.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m curious what device you are using. I have found when I watch on the TV the sound levels vary greatly but when I watch on my desktop or phone the volume is just right. I’ve used different sound levels on different videos. I’m still new at this and hopefully will get it right👍

@@DudeSawdust Yes, I primarily use a TV to watch, occasionally I’ll use an IPhone, but I can’t recall watching your channel on the phone. I like the French cleat system, that’s coming up for my garage and you’re giving me a good way to do the individual items. I am able to have the volume on the same as other channels for your speech, but I need to crank down the volume for the time lapse music to about half the value. I have more tool holder videos coming out. My plan is to do my own unique holder for my Kreg K4 pocket hole system next. I need to fill up that wall and declutter the workshop. I wish I could just quite my day job and do this full time but right now this is just a passion project. Thanks for your support and please be patient with my sound levels. 😬

Hello there, I do not like to whine, beyond whining, this is a piece of constructive critisism and I am taking the time to tell you because I almost close the video several times due to this: You need to control your audio levels. Let me explain... when you talk, is all good, clear and at a good volume, but then you cut into b-roll or whatever that is called and the music volume goes into concert mode. This is super frustrating for the viewer to be adjusting the volume so often for a video, and then again when you start taking, the volume is not too low and you cannot be heard so I have to go raise the volume again. I hope you get what I am saying and take it well, most people do not know how to take critisim properly. Appart from the volume, great video!

This KZfaq thing is a real challenge but very satisfying. 👍 right now I’m working on the legs of my wife’s desk using the circle cutting jig. Hope to have that video out next weekend 🤞

Video would have been good if it were not for the horrendously LOUD music. Constantly having to adjust my volume to accommodate this, made me give up watching - Too bad :(

This is one of my first videos when I didn't have the sound dialed in. I've since corrected the problem. Once these videos are uploaded I can't go back and make changes. I'm sorry it was a problem, you are one of many to make this comment. I hope you come back again and I appreciate you giving my channel a chance. :)
