Cool! As a Kiwi I'm curious what differences you notice compared to Canada and Australia, besides the high cost of living - 5 million ppl doesn't get you much competition :( I've seen some horror stories about seasonal worker accommodation in Queenstown, like ppl literally living in tents, which cannot be fun in a ski resort town at those latitudes.

I'm surprised that you each had to pay $1550 for a 1 way plane ticket to New Zealand. I ordered my 1 way ticket to Cambodia 6 months in advance for $1500 and then the prices dropped in the last month by a lot, so I was really kicking myself in the butt.

1550 was the cheapest we could find. A few months ago we found them for $800 round trip, I wish we bought then…
