The mileage is largely irrelevant given that a low mileage car can be poorly maintained for years and be in far worse condition than a high mileage, well maintained example.

The milage on the car isn't the issue, it's how it's been looked after. You could by one that's barely been driven and end up spending way more making it good again, so don't be put off. Best way to buy cars like this is from an enthusiast who's kept every receipt over the years to show they've given the car all it needs, and never done any daft mods. Buying any car from a trader who's job is to make profit is a risk..

Most new German cars are not sold to to car enthusiasts, they're sold to badge enthusiasts, and those people finance/pcp a car they can barely afford the monthly payments on, so they skimp on servicing/maintenance and then you have the famous phrase from TopGear "the fastest car is always a rental" so basically 99% of these cars have been driven like stolen from new, so they're all f**ked.

Only thing that had to be replaced so far is power steering pump. It was making a small noise that I knew wasn't right so I had it replaced before it got worse.

I had a 2000 USDM Civic coupe and it really was the "sweet spot" for electronic control and reliability. Just enough sensors to control emissions and basic things like timing advance to keep the engine running well and with the possibility of diagnosing faults with just a cheap OBD scanner. My 2009 Mercedes is impressive in that the diagnosis software can even test engine compression! There are too many sensors though, lots of possibly false information that can set you back when diagnosing faults. MB went through a serious bad patch in the early 00s and 2003 was a real breaking point and they then tightened up build quality a lot

High mileage does not have to be a bad thing. It all depends on how the vehicle has been looked after. I'll rather say that vehicles with low mileage for their age are risky to buy. Because they may well have been used mainly for short distance driving, on an engine never up to operational temperature. This will have worn out the engine.

My dad taught me from the age of 17 when I passed my test, don't buy high mileage cars. Find the little old lady round the corner with a 10 year old car which has only done 30K miles, just run in, serviced exactly when due, and you will have a car for 10 years with no trouble. It's not so easy to find when you are looking, but patience pays off and you will have very cheap reliable motoring.

If I found a low mileage AMG 63 of some sort that was owned by some old lady and only has gone to the store and back I would be scared to own that car. These were designed and built to be driven and if you don't drive them, they will fall apart. Not to mention, anything that hasn't broke by 170k miles was designed to last a long time and anything that has broken has already been replaced. Don't fall for that trap, these aren't your dad's old analog muscle cars. The last AMG's that were built like that probably were the convertible CLK 55's in 2006 or anything that used the M112/M113/M113k family of engines.

Even small engined cars like a 2018 1.5 Honda Jazz with over 100,000miles on it ran like a sewing machine. I think a lot of people buy a car, any car, then just don't service it. When it gives them grief they get rid and pass the problem on. A well serviced and maintained car will run forever. Great video...

Digital cars, high mileage, sensors getting older, computers with issues, ground wires with corrosion, bad grounds, water leaks on the just mentioned. highly tuned engines, turbos, more sensors, E-diff, software issues in 8 / 9 speed transmissions, buying one of these older digital models is bad enough, buying one without a warranty is Russian roulette. If it is maintained it s better, but still problematic. Worn front and rear suspension components causing negative chamber and wearing your high dollar rubber down to the steel bands (but only on the inside 3"), etc. I have tried this a couple of times. Not again. The pre 2006 more of an 'analog' type car did not share all of these exotic problems our newer cars seem to share.

Buy something new that has no issue and what content is that bringing? ,looking at the new stuff you have on the drive and all quite boring with a limited aspect of alteration as warrant and finance restrictions. As far as the Merc goes it will have all the same inherent issues of that marque, costs can be cut by experience and savvy parts purchase which is what gives you good content as you learn about all these vehicles.

Depends on the engine. Diesels last a lot longer for several reasons including diesel fuel itself is a lubricant so 200,000+ on a maintained one is nothing. 200,000+ on a high performance petrol engine stay well clear unless money means nothing to you.

These amg cars do cost a lot to maintain but they are very special and, in my opinion, excellent value for money on the second hand market. A lot of car for the money. Great video as always.

I think high milage is a problem, cause the wear and tear of the parts. Even if the car is well mantained, you dont change every part when its used. E.g. an used steering gear or the suspension parts may be technical alright, but you feel of wear and tear is present. On the other hand a car thats has sitten too long is not good either. But I general i would prefer an older car with lower milage to a car with lots of miles that is younger.

Wrong.......if you know the car's history....and the "high mileage" was done all on the highway over a relatively short period of time ( example, traveling salesman or such), and the car is not too old...all can be fine. Under these circumstances....MANY mechanics look at these cars as having anywhere from 10% to 25% of the "real" mileage, as to condition. Brand of car is important too. In my case ( in USA), I bought just such a car with 155,000 miles, as an 8 year old car. A Toyota. I still have it....the car is 17-18 years old.....looks and drives "As New"..... and has 272,000 trouble-free miles. You can't generalize . Benzes in particular ( most German cars... OF LATE)...are horribly unreliable and costly to fix when "aged"....quite in contrast to how German cars were built and how they behaved several decades ago.

Actually i was always better off with high mileage cars, most major issuer were allready fixed (at least one time) by the time it got to me. Every one of them were also pretty reliable, of couse most of them were so old they didnt even had ABS, but thats besides the point

Hi guy's, I've had a few hi mileage cars, all been good 👍 it's the way they are looked after. I had a subaru impreza with high miles that ran for 5 year's, never broke down once. It cost me around £700 on a part exchange with a BMW 740i . Good 👍 look with the merc

It's all about the life of the car not the mileage. You could have a low miler 10 year old car on 40k, that has only been around town and never properly heated up... nothing but problems and premature wear. I do a 70 mile a day round commute, in a 2011 R56 BMW MINI with 140k on it, and engine that doesn't really get to this mileage due to timing chain faults etc. A key to a reliable car is don't thrash it until the oil temperature is hot enough. 60°c for a BMW vanos engine. Change the oil, filters and spark plugs every 10k Check oil and levels once a week. MOST IMPORTANTLY preventative maintenance and fixing a niggle before it becomes a problem. It will last well in excess of 200k before becoming uneconomical to maintain...

Ya if your not a mechanic, def stay away from high mileage. But if you can do the work.....I purchased an S5 with 120k miles for about 16k less than one with 50k miles. Pretty good price. That 16k will instead be used to replace the connecting rods in the 4.2L and rebuild it, the clutch packs and input shift in the ZF mechatronic Trans, front suspension components, and a brand new engine harness. Doing all the work my self comes out to about 15k in parts. No point in buying a low milage car just to replace all the OE parts with aftermarket stuff lll

For toyota or lexus there's no such thing as high mileage but for most cars high milage shouldn't be any issue as long as its been kept good, maintenaned and any major work done to it so that you don't need to do it, my uncle has merc E class 2015 amg edition fully loaded when he bough it car had around 34k miles and now its at 205k miles and car still looks mint as same as when I saw it at 34k miles it's all about maintenance and how car has been driven etc I look at the paper work, service history, condition of the vehicle and what has been done to it also see what kind of owner it had there are many things to cheak out because you could buy a car with same engine with 70k miles that might have issues or damages were else same car with 170k might be alot better

There is 2 types of people who own high mileage performance car. First type. He had it from new and has been driving everyday on long distance roads on steady speeds up to 70mph and has maintained it well over the years on repairs and services. 2nd type. He thrashed the shit out of it on traffic lights. Doing his 0-60 then will Lend it to his mates to thrash, then sell it before it creates s problems for him, the next person does the same hard acceleration, once he notices problem he we look for cheap repair or flog it cheap.
