Mike, I'm British and patting yourself on the back is not 'the done thing' - it is easier to say how bad you are at things. However, you have earned the 'I am good enough' badge because you have impacted many lives in a positive way - and wow, the world needs that at the moment! Your videos are informative but also have a humanity behind them - pat on the back from me today and hopefully a hug from someone you love comes your way too. 🤗

Hi Mike, I agree with all the comments shown here but I just want to add my personal thanks for your all your comments and views. I am not a musician by any means, I love music and can create music using today’s technology and I will continue to so. My creations can’t be placed in a category because I feel that I’m an individual. Your videos have helped me tremendously and I am learning all the time. I am always reminded of something Paul McCartney once said in an interview, and it was that in creating music ‘there are no rules’. So you’re right, let’s all be individuals. Many thanks.

I've been doing this music thing since the 70s. Back then I was sure I was going to be a rock star. Moved to LA where I was turned down by every Record Company for years. Moved home kept trying kept learning hoping some day to get somewhere somehow. Got some great gigs and a lot more crappy ones. Still thought there has to be a reason why I had this fire in me. One day I finally realized that the gift of music I was given was for me to love and to give me happiness. I have several albums out not much commercial success, but I love doing it every day. Once in a while someone reaches out and tells me they like my stuff Thanks Mike for your insight and knowledge and for sharing what you have with us We all like your Stuff!

I come from that culture too! Knowing you are good at something is seen as arrogance. In the sports world it manifests as the graceful runner up. There's something in the psyche of many of us that makes us fixate more on what we can't do than what we can. The analogy about the un-balanced Universe is a very helpful one. Thank you.

I'm not in a bad place, haven't been for quite some time now, but at 62yo it is still great to get the boost of confidence this video just gave me. This has nothing to do with any musical aspirations whatsoever, just a generic feeling reminding me that I can be at peace with myself, regardless of other peoples judgement about me. You hit the right 🎶with this one, thanks for that!

Imposter Syndrome is common amongst musical artists. When I started singing and writing songs I did not think of myself as either of these, but as time has gone by I have had to accept that I can do these things. I don’t judge the quality just the appreciation and enjoyment I have had in the process. Much of this is because I have started to find a comfort zone. This ‘comfort’ comes from the people that supported me; who helped me overcome my own negative outlook. Mike you have been one of my supporters. I couldn’t have produced songs so easily without your guidance and mentorship. Together we improve. Like you, I don’t have a Grammy, but I know the journey I have come on. Today I am better than yesterday, and with support and belief I will be better tomorrow. We cannot all of us do everything but many of us have a small piece of a larger equation. Putting all these parts together and collaborating we collectively become better. Keep up the good work.

I can make people cry with my vocals! After just a few seconds, they're crying in pain and telling me to stop! 🤣🤣 But maybe with your words of advice, I can stop making them cry and start making them listen. It's all in your attitude about yourself and the dedication you put into your craft, whatever that may be. Great video!!

This is all really interesting and relevent to me me because a while ago I sent you some of my recordings having struggled with the production side, and the negatives were all I could really hear. You came back to me saying that the production didn't matter, because you were so impressed with my voice. At first I was surprised at this response from someone who has a KZfaq channel on audio production! But when I thought about it, I felt a tremendous sense of pride and -for want of a better word - validation, but it also made me realise that when we produce material, other people are hearing things, and appreciating things that we can't neccessarily hear ourselves, and ironically I now feel a lot more relaxed about the production side, and more momentum to take on new learning, and improve. So as always, thanks Mike!

Thanks, Mike for your great, educational and methodical videos. I would not have been where I am today and understood music production the way I understand it today. I am also very grateful for the Creative Sauce group who so generously answer and help with the questions we have as beginners. A very valuable resource. You are right that we should feel valued. God has created us so that we will build each other up with our talents, gifts and in that way enrich the world and develop these for our neighbor to share. Just as you say, the diversity within our genre also increases the joy of many who would not otherwise get to listen to the song and text that might lift the day they need it most. Thank you for all you contribute to this for us who learn and follow your great videos and the great mentor you are.

I have always been one of these guys that look at what I do wrong to see how I can improve. I recorded a track and asked the guy that I help at the church; by doing the sound desk. I wanted his advice about my drum tracks. I did the guitars and bass myself at home, and this was just a hobby track. He ended up copying the track and playing it on the Sunday service. I was blown away by what everyone thought of it. I just didn't expect anyone to like it. You are right, we can all resonate with others if we work at it.

Absolutely necessary to put these ideas in today's young people, who have not learned to enjoy and much less feel the weight of things, they need to know that not everything is vanality, that musical production and in general all forms of art, need to be sincere, heartfelt, that come from the heart and mind of someone who vibrated them in their innermost self. So you couldn't be more good than excellent, in each of your words, dear and dear Mike, without you I would not have recorded a single audio that I have today, and I learned all that from you, with simple, kind words , knowledgeable and super super constructive. You are the best, at least for me!

Love the philosophy behind your motivation man. It’s a fine line between self critique and self doubt, and maintaining that balance over the course of a career can be almost impossible at times. It’s always a comfort to see people we admire or aspire to facing the same challenges. Can’t have been easy making this video, but thank you for encouraging others to stay true to themselves, and instilling the belief that we each have something inside us capable of boundless possibilities if we can just invest the time into it over the long haul and not give up. But I think the message in this video is great and I definitely needed to hear it, especially from someone so accomplished. I'm still in the early days of writing and producing music and there are so many challenges that need to be overcome without self doubt beating you into submission. I seem to be most productive when I do it for me, and let go of any ambitions that can cause undue pressure resulting in more self criticism. Keep up the good work and thanks 👍

Your teaching has saved me hours and hours of time. Your style is perfect. You have a gift and you share it with others. This message is spot on, just go listen to Brushy one string "chicken in the corn" and look at the views. Who can define music? Thank you for all your videos.

Mike, you got me back on cakewalk again circa 2019 and then into the music community where I can share my stuff, and your tutorials and talks where very much help and support, in many ways. I'm not good enough, yet, but getting a bit better every day, one step at the time. Cheers!

Great video, thank you for the positive vibes! I'm in the last part, been making music for over a decade and even with folks really positive and supportive messages convinced I'm just gonna be a perpetual failure in life. And no amount of professional help nor medication ever really helps, I only really keep creating cause it's the only existence I know anymore.

Fantastic! What a wonderful way to motivate all of us to stay focussed and do what we all love to do ie share our love for music! In this uncertain time, where AI is everywhere, what better way to keep us on track! Thanks so much!

For anyone interested in diving a bit deeper into this it's called imposter syndrome. It's definitely something I've gone back and forth with in my music journey. I never believed I was a good singer and was always unhappy with my voice, but I've had quite a lot of people compliment me on the 'honesty' or ' 'vulnerability' of it I've the past couple of years (Mike was one of them!) and now I really lean into that style.

I agree with others, I wanted to get back as a hobbyists to music after decades. Your playlist for Cakewalk by Bandlab helped me enormously! 🎸👌😎🎶 Last time I was making music was 20 years ago using Cubase Studio 4! Learned a lot and I have been using Bitwig 5 Studio for the last year. Wish I had more time, life is always in the middle!

I think one of the positive things about KZfaq is we get to see other imperfect people putting videos out and successfully finding an audience. Yes, there are trolls everywhere in the comments but we need to realize that the trolls are there primarily to compensate for their own feelings of inadequacy so their opinions don't count.

Watched this when I got back from holiday a couple of weeks ago but I don't think I commented then. Inspirational stuff Mike - you've done more than most to inform, educate and entertain - just like the BBC here in the UK (well most of the time - the news is a bit right wing for my liking but the rest is brilliant) 🙂
I have a serious problem…
