I think I only want the R4 for crop mode. That to me is a crazy awesome feature. It’s like a crop sensor that can hulk out into an insane high end full frame megapixel camera.

That was a really good video guys! I like the juxtaposition of Chelseas approach to photography in comparison to Tonys.

For me it’s really more about versatility. I wanted a Sony mirrorless equivalent to the D850 and Sony finally made that. This means less gear in my bag and less hassle. If speed really gets to me, the crop mode with 26 megapixels and basically full AF coverage is right there waiting for me. It depends what you’re looking for.

This is one of the better videos from you two. I like the natural, honest feel of the video. In my opinion, videos like this (and not the overproduced ones) have more intimate feel and the voiced opinion comes across more credible. This was great, and welcome back to dreary CT in February! I've been using the R3 and the A73, and I find many of the same arguments between those two. I find myself reaching for the A73 for portraits, and the R3 for anything outdoors. Which Canon are you using for filming? The comment about its ability to autofocus video caught my attention.

Can't afford either, but watching because I like the tech.

I suppose it all depends on whether your an amateur, an amateur that has visions of becoming a pro, or a pro, Sports pro.. Personally I'm just an amateur, Nikon D810, I have good glass, so if I did it would be to a D850, etc. Hard to justify cost of spending when results aren't going to be different for what I use it for. Had two a7RIII and switched one out for the a7RIV. I like having one of each I admit. Use the a7RIII for walk around the a7RIV for more landscape and architecture work. Of course neither has replaced my a9 which I use for sports and wildlife so there cameras for every different purpose. Used to shoot all Canon and have tried the EOS R and it will be interesting to see what this EOS R5 will be to see if, for mirrorless, they become a leader again. I personally really don't shoot video so I discount that from most my decisions on cameras except when I consider resale and what others want for the the used market. Thanks for the video.

When does the A7R V come out? I'm waiting for a fully functional touchscreen and improved menu system.

I'm glad i stuck with my Nikon Z6 when I added it to my Nikon kit its fast and the body handles great. Im sick of feature overload. I want the basics to work well.

From camera of the year to dumping it? Wow! Ive shot with the riii and the riv and IMHO, for me, the difference is worth purchasing the riv. There are a lot of somewhat minor improvements, but the biggest one for my shooting is the ability to crop more aggressively. It really makes a difference when shooting, especially wildlife. Ive had many occasions when I could get by with my 70-200 vs. having to buy a longer more expensive lens. Also, I like the EVF much better as the increased resolution is very noticeable, especially when magnifying. I think the auto focus is better on the riv and that is something I also believe is worth paying for. I have noticed the difference between 399 points vs. 567 points in both auto focus and tracking ability. Anyway, just my opinion, I certainly value yours, but again, for me, the a7riv is well worth the price! best to you, Rick

I've had my eye on the Sony A7R iv to use for my macro and wildlife photography. Currently I am shooting with a Fuji XT-3 and the extra detail for macro is important. As for wildlife I would use it in crop mode for the added reach. (This would probably take the buffering issue out of the equation) Just thinking out loud as I probably won't switch anytime soon... I broke my a7iii and decided to take the leap for the a7riv. The MP are fun, but overkill. But the body and button upgrades make so much of a difference for me. It is far more enjoyable to use, and that means something to me.

Wish I had the money to bounce around camera systems on a whim ...:-(

I love my Sony a7Riii, also have the a7iii. You guys coming to WPPI ?

Switching from R3 to R4 made a descent difference for me. I cared more about quality and not about time .. very rarely to miss out on something extraordinary happening, however, with my R4, i am finding my work on LR and video editing becoming a bit easier and more sharper than the R3 were. Besides, the quality shows, if you were to do 3d prints for products, or bigger size posters. My final verdict is that i love my R3, i use it now for social events, for quick pictures for online ads and / or social media, but for more professional use, i will always chose the R4 with a heart beat, for i know 99.99% chance my pictures will turn out to be to my liking. However, and to be completely honest, for a novice to med professional user, they might not be able to see the difference right away, and therefore , i understand if they chose the R3 instead , where they can invest the extra $ into the accessories. It makes complete sense, and either way you would be making a great choice.

I asked a few month ago a friend that has a medium format and he told me he can't shoot wedding with that because the processing is just too much time consuming, they got a very good point here, what's the reason to have more MegaPixel if you miss the shot because the buffer is full ? I was blown away by the new 61 MPx sensor but then I'm like the vast majority of people will never gonna need that much. Great Video, this is by far the best photography channel.

Honestly this was my favorite video you guys have done to date and it has nothing to do with saving money on the R3. This format just seemed like a much more candid and authentic discussion about your experience, than comparing specs in the studio on the big tv. I'd love to see more content like this from you guys.

I don't particularly disagree with anything you explained, that being said, there are other benefits the a7r4 provides, that the a7r3 does not: Animal eye AF, real time tracking, larger grip, better weathersealing, better EVF, 2x UHS-II card slots, USB-C vs Micro, better feeling buttons, faster wireless connectivity to phones, wireless tethering, phase detect AF at higher Fstops allowing the use of teleconverters on telephoto lenses - on top of having more megapixels while retaining same dynamic range and ISO performance. This is a lot of benefits: Are they worth the price difference? That's subjective. :)

I shoot the 5DSR in 22mpx format most of the time. the image is, perforce captured as 50mpx but then re-sized in camera to 22pmx ( jpeg ). This would clearly save storage and SD process time; might not save much in buffering though -- try it for us ?? again thanks for a really great vid !!

It is good to see you two re-thinking your camera decisions like we all do. In the long run, it is not about the money, it is about the experience and happiness it gives you, and for professionals, it is about the money it makes you. I have watched reviews, decided I need/wanted a new camera, then 6 month later when it went on sale I got it. By then I could not remember why I wanted/needed it. I still have not quite figured it out yet. Next time I need to take notes. Yes, I have your book, but too intimidated to open it yet.

Tony and Chelsea - you mentioned panoramas and stitching them together in Photoshop. My Sony APSC has a panorama function that stitches them together in camera. Have you done any testing regarding the two options? Advantages/disadvantages of each? (Newbie here, thanks in advance for the advice)

Hi Chelsea & Tony, love your channel, great info. I know you are very busy, if you have the time I need help with a camera question. I'm current shooting medium format (ALPA A-Series) for my landscapes. The thing is I need a bit more versatile camera as kind of a secondary camera. I like my D810, but its getting a little old and it is just so big and heavy. We often hiking well over 10 miles to get the shot and its time to lighten my camera bag. Any recommendations for a smaller, high mega pixel, good video camera options? Don't want to break the bank and was thinking the Sony A7r iii. If you have the time would love to hear your professional thoughts. Thank you!

Super sad to hear you guys so down on the RIV after more time with it. Your initial reviews and impressions have been a big motivator for me to go out and jump in to the mirrorless Sony world. I ended up going with the IV in part due to some of that enthusiasm, and I wish this video was out on Wednesday to help me temper myself a little more before I took the plunge and made my order. But that’s life. I’m super excited to learn this system and to really challenge myself to grow here. I really just wanted to thank you guys for being honest and for continuously putting yourself out there. You guys are great and I always look forward to your next thoughts.

What lenses did you use? My experience with film (Panatomic-X) and a very good prime (Nikkor-P 105mm f2.5) showed a limit of about 200 lines/mm, which would equal approximately 30 megapixels on a full-frame digital camera. I have never found a zoom lens as sharp. Of course, my lens is 48 years old, and lens technology has improved, but there are limits. What are yours?

This is hard. Even though I know the big 3 brands are all great I have Sony cameras and I want all the KZfaq celebrities to affirm my investment. This is what Sony needs though. The last thing we want is for them to sit back and try to save money on R&D

I shot with the R3 from literally day one. All types of photography and loved it. Bought the R4 day one and love it. If I could I would stick the R3 sensor in the R4 simply to avoid the high ISO hit... which by my stigmatization is about 1.5 stops worse in the R4. The added noise does not clean up to the point of being equal upon down sampling. But between the two if I can only have one I'd still keep the R4. The R3 ISO performance was improved once with a firmware update so if they do the same with the R4 then it's a total win win. My favorite things about the R4 is that you can shoot in crop mode and still have 26mp and that you can store your custom settings on a memory card. Would not go back to the R3 at any price.

If time is that important, I'm seeing how smart those engineers were in the M4/3 camp, especially in light of how much, large prints are generated and how much, low light shooting is done by the "average Joe" ...... hmmmmm

Love the way Chelsea puts the Sony UHSII card in the UHSI card slot of the A7r3!! But the A7Riv is worth it to me for the improved autofocus.....

I have the A7III, what are your thoughts on shooting with the A7RIV in crop mode to shrink file size and to speed up processing when you don't need the full 61MP's? I'm torn between upgrading to the RIII or the RIV. I fear the RIV might be overkill for me.

I love the honesty and integrity of your video reviews. I went with the Sony A9II instead of the A7RIV for all of the reasons Chelsea mentioned, though I had second thoughts. This is reaffirming (confirmation bias, perhaps). BTW, I have your book and recently updated to the new edition and found it very helpful even though I've been making photographs for more than 40 years.

I shoot with my d750 with a 14-24 sigma for a couple of years and im supper happy, i tried a friends z6 and i wouldn’t trade my 750 for it

Tony, I’m curious if this bad high res mode is specific to Sony or do they all suck? I’ve never had a camera with this function, but I believe Olympus and Pentax do the same thing. I believe reviews have mentioned the Pentax high res mode not working well on the K-1.

Tony/Chelsea -- what amount of time do you take to process (sort, keep, delete, preview) say 500 photos once you get them onto your computer? I have a Lumix G85 (what I could afford and works great for family photos), but I sometimes regret "blasting" photos at family events and then trying to sort out 200+ photos, many of them almost identical the shot right before/after -- it takes a lot of time to decide which ones to keep. Just wondering how you both do it -- and how much time you spend doing it?????

Greeting all, I have the Sony a7rii and recently purchase the a7riv . I edit my photos on a 2015 iMac with 32 of gb ram. The editing software that I use is capture one pro which was free with the of purchase of the a7rii . I still use capture one pro (update version) and it loads the 61 mp file of the a7riv just as fast . I personally of not used any other editing software because this one was free in the box, Try capture one and compare it to other editing software in term of loading large file speed. Thank you

Which lenses did you have on these? I did move to sony after being a canon user and Fuji and I’m happy for Sony now except the screen resolution isn’t good and I had a big decision riv or riii And went with Chelsea too as the riv it could be too slow for me. It wouldn’t make it fun anymore if it’s too slow

Such BS ,In six months they'll be switching back from canon or to the next new thing. Both cameras are great & the points made are just an excuse to stay in the product hype biz.

For wildlife, the higher megapixel image on the a7r4 means you can shoot with less zoom and get same results. And remember the a7r4 can shoot aps-c to really reduce file size. I just bought the a7Riv and find aps-c mode with the 70-300 zoom makes a nice daytime wildlife setup giving me reach of 450mm and still plenty of megapixels in my images to work with. Also the r4 just feels better to me. I tried both and just didn't like the way the r3 felt in my hands... r4 feels much more natural.

Wanted to add that the A7r4 has a slow storage controller. If you calculate the write speed based on time, it is much slower than the 300MB/s that the card offers for writes.

Yeah Sony really need to work on that, faster buffer across the board. Lossless compressed would help a lot.

I think people are obsessing over canon glass but forgets how they screw over their customers on a daily basis.... I mean the EOSR and RP are horrible cameras for anything. Glass is so expensive most non pro togs wont even get to buy them and they nerf/strangle the cameras to make them do 1 thing great and the rest awefull not to chip in on their other cameras. Never again canon!

Would reducing the a7r-iv to about 42mp reduce the buffering time to be nearly equivalent to the a7r-iii or is it better to be close to the native resolution of the sensor? It seems like most of what Chelsea didn't like is the large file size.

Question though Chelsea, during the whole switch from Nikon to Sony you mentioned that the A7R3 did not really have the AF that would allow you to do birding, was that sorted on the A7R4? Personally - I am waiting to get the A7Mk4 and hoping to swap out from A7R2. I am hoping it will be 32-36Mp... I think that is the sweet spot for IQ vs Time....

I think sometimes you are getting closer to just picking fights to release content or setup a new phase for next months content. I personally would also love to see more options in raw but really you get 'blocked' by taking images and then moving to video ? Lets assume you want to write to both cards right (i mean that was the idea) the R4 does very well indeed even at 61 megapixels. How fast do you shoot these brackets and then movie Tony ? I just tested 5 bursts of 5 images with about 0.5 seconds between burst and then started a video. Time from start to video running 13.8 seconds. So thats 25 images (where we assume you moved the camera 5 times right?) and then start the video. The last burst made me wait about 2 or 3 seconds max.... Now i would get my R3 if you want and do the same test again with 2 cards (right?) but i am sure it will be slower.... but thats not the point taking 5x5 in stacked mode and then starting a movie in 13.8 seconds who would do that in reality and at that speed.
