As a R6 owner I definately aggree! The R5/R6 are great hybrid cameras with a focus on photos. As someone that does mostly KZfaq videos and some small video side gigs besides taking photos, the R6 rocks, especially with the Ninja V. I use an EOS R as my b cam and for that price they both produce a great image. Of course, the C70, being part of cinema line, is the right choice for video work... Who would have thought, that a more expensive and strictly video centered camera is better than the R5 ;)

I started doing videos with my EOS R6 in combination with the EOS R. Overheating is a BiG issue on the R6 even it's with the Atomos Ninja V as the external recording device. The Atomos Ninja also gets overheated as well if you're going to record for long hours. After a year, I've got my hands on the C70 to get all my videos done and the performance is way much better than before.

I guess this video could have better been explained as “don’t try to use an R5 as a professional cinema camera replacement” because you’ve made it very obvious here. It’s not a cinema camera and it shouldn’t be mistaken as such. It’s great for its intended use and can compliment a cinema rig when needed.

Of course. But a lot of people do. A lot of people only want to have one camera. This video is more a guide for people who might want to step up their business and doesn't know the troubles you get in with this camera ;)

@@damiencooper oh absolutely, and I certainly feel you’ve presented endless valuable data over the past year - especially for me. But when things escalate to the level you are shooting, this is a horrible option. Hopefully the rumored R5C will be able to expel many of the issues you’ve had. For me, I’m photo first and video second and even then I have run into my own issues. I’m not in ‘owning a cinema camera’ territory yet, but have worked with them briefly on productions. An R3 is on order for its significantly improved video features and because it will bring a lot to the table in my main avenue of income, motorsports. But as the video projects get bigger and bigger, renting or buying something better suited to this role of video makes more sense for everyone.

All valid points. I still use my R5 for video.. I just got the Ninja V+. I had a Shogun 7 before, which was way better with my R5 rig than the Ninja V.. and it gets to 3000 nits, so plenty bright for outdoors.. but sold that to get the V+, for 8K raw in actually usable files. I run it alongside a C70, and it works for me. Absolutely understand not wanting to bother with the external recorders though. As it stands, if I'm ever doing a job that only requires 1 camera, I grab the C70 95% of the time. Only really ever use the R5 when I need to do gimbal work. R5's small size and autofocus, with the 8K ProRes RAW (which records in CLog 2.. which makes the color matching and dynamic range issues a bit easier to manage) is just too good to pass up when I need to fly it. But I honestly barely use gimbals.. and whenever Canon decides to give us a full frame C70 (already have the speedbooster.. but want to be able to use RF lenses at full frame), I'm sure I'll ditch the R5.

This video hits home on some great points that a higher end cinematographers would face that an amateur or one starting out would never notice. The size thing sounds stupid, but clients with big bucks don't know the details and equate bigger cameras to better quality, they're paying so yeah it matters. The weight and balance too, again if you're running and gunning for a day it's not so bad. Trying to do it for multiple days and it a big difference.

A note on the video however - I don't know how much control you, the channel owners, have over this but I got 3 ads in the first 1 minute 20 seconds and 2 more at various intervals. I like to support creators on YT so I let the ads play but it does get invasive and literally prevents me from watching the content. Ive had such a hard time deciding, which brand to go for as i wanted to switch away from blackmagic last fall (just a pain to work with for run and gun) when i had to choose whether to invest into sony a7s3 vs. canon r5….in the end i endet up going for sony (no overheating and the much better priced glass options). And boy was that a good choice. Ive shot several projects with tons of 200fps creative shooting in superhot summer in bright daylight (shot the entire day), slso some weddings with 4k100 for some b-roll when suddenly something really cool happened and i could just keep rolling for almost another 30mins with only seconds of breaks in between (only for myself to find different clips easier in the edit)… and it held up like a champ. Im so happy with it… That all being said: the r5 is a pro Photography-Camera. That it was even hard to decide is absolutely impressive from canons side …amazing times..

did you try recording 4k cropped? the 4khq is 8k supersampled down to 4k. but the 4k cropped is 6k supersampled down to 4k. so you get a beautiful image especially compared to the regular 4k uncropped mode. and this mode will never ever overheat under any conditions. yeah, you do have to account for the cropping but for my situation, it's not a big deal when I get such amazing quality. Agree with everything you said. Once you shoot with internal NDs it’s impossible to go back. And the Ninja V/Shinobi are just not bright enough for outdoor use. I did a multi-day shoot in the nuclear bright Florida Sun outdoors in the Keys using the Shinobi. Worked great WITH THE HOOD! Without the hood, totally agree, 1,000 nits isn't nearly enough. But the hood wasn't that bad to use, a little inconvenient but got the job done. Really pretty happy with the Ninja V and Shinobi, just wish they had 2,500 nit versions. I don't ever follow the herd. I live where Apple products come at a 55%+ premium. I need to edit that 8K RAW and I also don't use Adobe due to their subscription model. Not to reinvent the wheel to please 1% of global viewers of 8K TV's, I decided to make my life easier with smaller, lighter M43 cameras for short video clips and wildlife, mainly big cats such as leopard and lion, also lesser cats such as caracal and cheetah, and African wildcat. In Kgalagadi desert, just south of Ghanzi, summer temps often go north of 43°C. See your R5 melt in that heat. Several PRO shooters use OM SYSTEMS in the Okavango, Chobe, Moremi, Savuti, Thuli and Kgalagadi. Olympus is know for hardy craftsmanship, after all. And I can edit on a Linux laptop behind the steering wheel, in those endless hours we wait for a giraffe or eland to show up. Great time management. Edit in-car on-site. As home is almost a thousand rough miles away.

@@RandomActsOfWil, I think both replied to your “I just don’t get people” with the reasons for their buying decisions: 1) R5 came out before C70; and 2) Canon marketed the hell out of R5 as a video camera first, never even mentioning the strong photo features or photo first camera As for Monkeypixel, I don’t think it’s complaining when he was the first to mention all these issues on YT a year ago, if not one of the few and got roasted in that video by all the Canon fan boys. And yet he stuck with it for a year and stated it clearly in this video why as a paid professional, it just doesn’t work for him. I see this video not as complaining but rather sharing the limitations of the R5 for long form corporate videos and/or for cinema/film work which I is true and I can appreciate. I have the R5 but I don’t use it long form, nor am I a paid professional so it’s good to learn what a pro filmmaker needs to consider. I’m testing out the Tilta fan and I get longer recording times as I also don’t prefer using Atomos 5 unless it is long form. But the 30min recording limit is annoying. For bright daylight, I use the ef to rf variable drop in filter adapter. And Kolari Vision and Breakthrough Photography has more filter options For lowlight, I still use the Metabones speedbooster and after firmware update 1.4 in March and onwards it allows R5/6, C70, and Red Komodo to be used in crop mode. Making the 1.6 crop down to 1.136 (=1.6 x 0.71). And with this mode (it’s not 8K oversampled down to 4K but 5.1K DCI or 4.8K UHD oversampled down to 4K), I can record without overheating and only have a crop factor of 1.136. Just need to deal with the 30min recording limit that shouldn’t be there anymore. For audio, I use the InstaMic for time codes and synching. Need to try out the Tentacle products. For color matching, Cinematch does a decent job. But all this is a lot of work to manage and remember so if I was getting paid, definitely a cinema camera is the way to go.

Okay I see why you're having difficulties with an external. Starting off with an unbalanced rig and shooting the way you do, it would kill my wrist to shoot like this. A properly balanced rig with an evf is what I'd recommend. Still won't solve several other options but I think you're trying to use a 12V wireless drill to bore a 3/8" hole....yes, it can be done but it's not the tool for the jobs you shoot. You seem more run n gun and when I do run and gun is straight C300 I'm using, not an R5. In a controlled environment R5 is great.

Sounds like you need the R5c. I don't agree with the reasons to drop the R5 except for overheating. You know the R5 is a hybrid camera. Go shoot your photo's with the C70 then. You bought a hybrid camera. The R5 has great AF that the C70 and C300 does not. So, you can't make that up can you if you need working AF. At 08:35 why didn't you protect the highlights / windows and raise the shadows on her face? Expose the shot correctly see what you can do in post. Everyone uses the Ninja V outside. Your argument is that the R5 is not a cine camera.

@contentm3893
@contentm3893 2 жыл бұрын
@@damiencooper Battery life is not good, you are correct. Built in ND's shouldn't be an issue since you cine-rig everything. Really, if you needs to take stills also then you need a hybrid. You seem like you're caught in the middle and don't want to lose credibility with the cine-world by going all in on a hybrid camera. Get a A1 or FX3 and report back. Cine cameras are not run and gun and need to be rigged out. Rigging out a camera is not an advantage. You can do the same with the R5. Have you done a test with the R5 dynamic range with clog3? You used a controlled scene that you shot to prove the R5 has poor dynamic range but that doesn't show how the final scene would look if you protected the highlights and lit that scene properly. Meaning, you need to show what the camera can do in a controlled environment. I could give you 10 reasons why the R5 out performed the C70 on a real world shoot.

It amazes me how many people think it's the camera that overheats....it's actually the card the overheats. Have ya'll ever touched the card right after filming before or even transferring? That think is on fire. Also people need to realize shooting with these hybrids that have all these amazing video capabilities comes at a price. Meaning MORE COMPRESSION. This isn't just and R5 issue. So if you want a simpler workflow always buy a cinema camera. I appreciate the explanation but ya'll KZfaqrs are part of the problem. Ya'll staying running and getting the newest thing and replacing cameras, encouraging others to do the same then make a video like this.
@damiencooper
@damiencooper 2 жыл бұрын
well, the camera still overheats when recording externally although faster.. Lots of other hybrids don't. As for buying and replacing, I am not buying this for youtube but for my production company. The C70 wasn't out yet and I needed a b cam to my C300III. I have outgrown the R5 and now had to step up because of the shortcomings. And I am making a video like this EXACTLY so people don't purchase new gear they quickly outgrow in the future by pointing out shortcomings like this
@Mr_Moka
@Mr_Moka 2 жыл бұрын
@@damiencooper I hear you but once again it isn’t the camera that overheats it’s the card. Mainly because the bitrate that the R5 shoots at is much higher than other similar cameras at 4K. I do understand needing a B-cam for the C300MIII but again we are now talking about a Hybrid camera vs. a cinema camera. We will forever want smaller gear to fit our shooting needs and that’s fine but I think the expectations for the R5 were a bit unrealistic. I still stand by my comment about KZfaqrs. Like it or not y’all have a lot of influence on your viewers about equipment to use or not to use. You might not be guilty of this but a lot of KZfaqrs will run to new gear only to change it out in a years time. Where as most of the viewers simply don’t have that luxury. You feel me? Nothing against you just my observations.

Tbh some points are straight up BS. First you complain that you need big rig because your clients are dumb enough to pay for the size of the gear not the quality of the image and then you complain about external monitor that is too big and/or heavy. Like wtf. Another thing you've just been buttering how awesome and bright and basically solving every problem in the world (hunger propably too) are Feelworld monitors and now you're bitching about Atomos that is too dark. Like the built in screens in C300 or C70 are any better. I used to like your reviews but now you're just losing arguments and make your earlier videos pointless - I mean it's either them or this.
