There’s a lot of misconceptions about what “Latin” looks like. It’s not a race, but only in America due to its history, Latin people are mixed. If you think about it. It makes sense. Native Americans, who migrated from Siberia, and Asia after the last Ice Age. Then came the Spaniards, and later the English, French, Irish, Scots, Scandinavians, Italians etc. The slavetrade that brought people over from Africs to America, mostly from the west coast of Africa, and south. It’s a melting pot. America was built on immigration, as well as slavery, and genocide. People are shocked when they see blond and blue eyed latin people, but their ancestors came from Spain, Portugal, and Italy, which øre the romance countries that make up the Latin sphere including France. People have to realize how genetics works. It’s like a lottery, and you never know what you will end up with basically. Sometimes it even skips a few generations. As a hairdresser and MUA I have seen this in form of hair color, hair texture as well as other typical traits like freckles, ginger/red hair and so on. Some kids doesn’t even look like their parentes, and you learn that they got their apperance from their grandparents. Sometimes even the theory of the dominant gene (melanin), doesn’t always work. Seen plenty of mixed people of Asian and Cacuasian blend, and manybof them look «white». You can’t even telll. I my self took a DNA test because all my life I have been told by others that I don’t look Filipino (enough), due to ignorance, and racism. I am too dark (tan), or I don’t look Chinese. I kinda knew what to expect because I know my history, and the history if my people and our islands, so in the end I proved to be 100% Filipino. No add mixture of anything. Every other Filipino I have seen taking these tests got a whole cocktail of different ethnicities. So I was kinda disappointed, even though I predicted this outcome.

Gille87 in Europe most of Latinos are considered European people. We care about ancestry not skin colour like Americans to determine race. Because there are many Europeans with dark skin like Maltese, Spanish, Sicilian and also Moldovan

You're totally right about the lottery and dominant genes not alays mattering (is that a word?) just today I saw a fully african, very dark, woman with I think curly hair (she ahd braids) with a blonde, light-eyed but quite dark skinned compared to most just european people (kind of cappuccino, while her mother was coffee without any milk). The girl also had curly hair, and had some of her mother's facial features. A very interesting girl in terms of looks.

It's still interesting. I mean, how many people actually get 100% of anything. The planet is a melting pot. Especially with the way humans migrated throughout human history.
@cricril2840

Toni Sumblin Racism is still the same wherever you go. The culture behind it though can differ. I think that yeah Americans are a lot more obsessed by the concept of skin colour compared to Europeans, mainly because of their history. Europeans more than the concept of “I am white” or “I am black” are more focused on where you or your parents are from. Just because the culture behind racism differ from country to country it still doesn’t mean that one is better than the other...it’s still racism. How we look is important no matter where you go...If you are a black man in Germany you will be looked as a “not German” simply because you don’t look like one. I am not saying that you will not be accepted and have a great life there, that’s just how it is. Another important thing that no one talks about, is the concept of citizenship...there is the citizenship A and the citizenship B. Not even between Europeans we treat each other equally. Sad but true. So yeah no one is saying that there is no racism in Europe, but I completely agree with you that sometimes SOME Europeans think of the themselves too highly.

I know you're waiting on your other kits, and from what I heard, Ancestry is better...but I downloaded my 23andme kit and uploaded it to gedmatch and DNALand, and it gave me way more detail about my "broadly" categories. I'm obviously African American, but most African Americans are mixed, even our African DNA tends to be all across West Africa and other regions of the continent. I would upload your kit and find out more info. I found out I was mostly Nigerian and Cameroonian, but also part Mende, biaka pygmy, British ( just got a note from my British cousin on 23andme confirming), and even part Dardish/ Pakistani, along with a bunch of other stuff. It's crazy sis. I'm excited to know anything about my ancestry since I do not have a relationship with my father or his family, I'm the only child of my two parents, and my mother was adopted in a closed adoption.

I actually have a similar story to yours! I am 3/4 Vietnamese and 1/4 White. My dad is Vietnamese and my mom is half Vietnamese and half White, she too does not know her father at all. And my older sister definitely got more of the "mixed" gene LOL. My mom was conceived while Vietnam was under war so my grandma met my grandpa who was an American soldier. Of course "white" could mean anything so I also took the 23andme test and found out that my grandpa is most likely from Spain. I would love to get my mom to do a test but growing up without a father in such a time in need is still very sensitive to her.

I am 3/4 Vietnamese and 1/4 black! My mother was in the same situation as yours as well. She also has never met her father. I’ve met many people that are mixed because their grandfather was an American soldier in the war. Many soldiers reproduced and left their children in Vietnam and returned back home to the states. I wonder if there’s a system that could help these children find their fathers.

Wow! I have met multiple people that are vietnamese and black! some of which are very close to my family. I'm not sure if my mom would want to meet her father but there was the Amerasian homecoming act which let this happen. My mom's situation was a little bit different since her father probably doesn't know she exist because during that time where my grandmother migrated from north to south Vietnam, with no family and no money, she was an escort for many of these American soldiers. So I have aunts with french fathers, just my mom has an American dad.

I have 2 matches (so far) that are in the same situation as your mother (So the match is on the White father's side) while looking at my match's profile to help her out another match showed up who had to be a half sibling with a Vietnamese mother. Both born in 72 and 73 in Vietnam. Same circumstances their mother's won't tell them who the father is (probably they don't know). A soldier in that War could have conceived children every day of the week in theory.

Thanks for posting this personal video, I was looking forward to this since your Insta post. I have a similar dilemma when I did 23andme. I have never met my biological father. Some of the ancestry I got back was totally expected, some of it not as much. However, they came out with the Family Tree after I tested. Seeing that I had over a thousand “relatives” I logged into that thinking nothing of it when I got the release email. Most of course are like 5th cousins, but there was a half sister, aunt, and first cousin from my biological father’s side. It totally sucker punched me and really turned me upside down, I didn’t even have his name but suddenly I was looking at the picture of a half sister. I ended up having that difficult conversation with my mother and got more information afterwards. I haven’t decided if I’m going to contact him/them yet, as I logged out of that service so they cannot see me. Seeing as there is a little bit of a situation in your father’s side and you may find some of your father’s relatives (no guarantee) you may want to think very hard about contacting them/making a profile public in that specific part of the website. It could change your life forever. Maybe nothing is there, perhaps I’m just an extreme case. I’m not trying to tell you to do one thing or another. Please give it some time and think it through. Love your videos, please never change. All the best!

They use the DNA information anonymously to develop drugs based on certain genetic markers that indicate for disease (for example, a certain genetic marker can signal for a higher likelihood of breast cancer called BRCA1) ...it's a little creepy to have your information being sold, yes, but it could also save a lot of lives.

I don't think I relayed what I was trying to say correctly because my mind was all over the place when I filmed this - my dad is very pale and also he has very dry skin (like he has eczema) and also very thin hair. I guess I was thinking about all the Spaniards I have met in my life and typically they have thicker hair and have an oiler skin type (like myself) - I am aware that people can have all different traits within one ethnicity. I've been trying to visualize what his dad might have looked like my whole life so when I realized he was of British descent things clicked a bit for me. I wasn't trying to put any one ethnicity into a box - just tryna figure out my family.

Hey bb girl! The reason why your dads spanish side wasn't showing up is because as a female we only have XX chromosomes, so we can track the lineage of our maternal haplogroup, our mothers mothers mothers etc. Our brothers/fathers have XY which can track the paternal haplogroups too where we cant, so if you look on the ancestry reports page you'll notice under the paternal haplogroup it doesn't give results! So you probably still got spanish in your dna get your dad to take the test!! I got my brother to do the test instead of me because I know we'll get more results that way!

What is in your DNA isn't perse reflective of the whole picture of your background. Because you always only get half of your parent it could very much be that the Spanish part was on the other half that you didn't get. Your sisters DNA result would probably look immensely different from yours because she got different parts from your parents. You should view the results of this test as a 'shard' of information of a bigger story rather than _the complete story_. Also, what does one make of a certain decent? It could be that someone's parents moved to a different place, the child could feel 100% of the country that they grew up in without having literal roots there.

I've always liked watching DNA videos XD I'm shocked with your results, too!! I wanted to do one, but it sucks that they can't go into depth about Southeast Asian countries.. Anyways, I look forward to your other results hehe.

I think you have some hispanic roots. I was born in Norway from a Norwegian dad and a Bolivan mom and I look like Thai or a girl from Philippine. I don't know why lol. Yes, my parents are my parents but we believe that asian were around Latin America for some time but unlike spaniards they did not mess-up with the culture. Everytime I go to any asian restaurant specially Thai or Vietnamese they look at me and start speaking their language. However, one time I was in New York and some lady asked me if I was or have a Native American roots lol ...

Europe has a lot of history in between the countries, a lot of migrations and such. My mom family is Polish and has a lot of f*ed up history like pregnancy before wedding, adoption and all... But we actually have more knowledge about where people were from than my dad's family that is suspiciously all French. No Spanish, Italian, belge ..? Like officialy everyone is French as far as we can look, but you know how it is... Long story short, I'm half French, half Polish, but people tend to think I'm mixed Mediterranean, sometimes not even white. People like to think I'm mixed Arab or Asian which doesn't make sense at all but ok xD

I know your pain. I'm a blend of a bunch of northern European lines. Scottish, Welsh, Irish, German, Danish, English and Nordic. Some people asked me if I was Italian....I was so confused to what brought that up.

Hey! I know this video is from 3 years ago, and I don’t see that you posted the other companies results. I’m curious if there were any big differences between the three sets of results. Maybe not, since you only did a video for 23 & Me. I would expect most of mine to be Northwestern Europe, and I don’t like that 23 & Me seems to lump those all together. I want one that can differentiate between the various countries.

I did the 23 and me too. I’ve knew my background was half Viet and half Mexican. Mexicans are Aztec and Spanish so results show as native Americans and European. My results were 48% Asian 30%Native American and the rest European

Hello Darling, I love your videos. I always think they're amazing :) I just wanted to warn you regarding 23andMe though. Please be skeptical and dig into some research with any/all online DNA testing. Beyond the privacy issues, the whole telling you your ethnicity thing doesn't make sense if you think about it. Ethnicity is a completely social construction that just tells us where you were born aka a place which has borders which were decided upon by other people. Also, 23andMe (and all companies like it) is only comparing DNA within their own DNA database so that will skew the results. Try taking a mail order DNA test from another company and the results will be different. Again, LOVE YOU and this is not a criticism! Just a little "think this over" comment :) XOXO!

Hey Love! Actually currently, I can't recommend one without feeling like I'm compromising you. I know that sounds dramatic but right now I wouldn't recommend any. However, I would like to add that I totally understand the curiosity about doing this especially since I'm adopted. Also, to clarify (because I didn't really communicate it well in my first comment) when I said "try taking a mail order DNA test from another company and the results will be different" I meant that DNA tests from different online companies will show different results because they are all - ummm - whack! Hehe. Anyway, I'm sorry for the non-answer answer! Hope you have a lovely weekend though :)

So happy you've done this too, it looks so intersting! But why did you keep saying just English and not saying British and Irish? haha It's like you thought Britain/UK is just England! I'm English... but this would really offend some of my Irish, Scottish and Welsh friends. So just be careful Stephanie! Also, I've just done the Ancestry DNA test and waiting for my results! SO EXCITING I have no idea what it could say :D xoxo

Cool video! Iberian peninsula includes Spain. Also, most Spaniards are fair skinned. In Mexico there is a lot of variance in skin tone, like one sibling might be really white and blue eyed and their other sibling very dark skinned, due to Spanish conquests of the country. The darker skin tones are from Native American tribes in Mexico. Idk if maybe you were thinking more Mexican rather than Spanish? Not that it really super matters 🌈 🙆🏻‍♀️

My grandmother is a lot darker than me and has black hair. She swore she was half Native American. I took a DNA test and found out I’m mostly German ... with no Native American whatsoever. I told my parents not to tell my grandmother because she prided herself on being Native American and had a bunch of Native American collectors dolls! They told her anyway 🙄 she and none of the other family believed the test 😂. Some Turkish dna showed up in my profile, so I’m guessing that’s where her darker skin came from. I did the National Geographic one, which didn’t provide a whole lot of detail, so I would be interested to try this one!!!

It's been awhile since you uploaded this, but have you ever uploaded your 23andMe raw data to Wegene? They specialize in East Asian DNA. If you do, make sure you switch over to the Chinese language version and have Chrome translate to English. You get ALOT more info on the Chinese site. Including a health report 23andMe wants you to pay for.
