I feel like Ragnarok was a step back from 2018 for the singular reason that they squeezed a trilogy into a duology and that meant they would have to speedrun story beats without much subtext, they even had the characters state their feelings out loud cause there wasn't enough time to let them flow naturally.

The sad thing is, ragnarok had such a great entrance with thor that i was dying to see him again but not too much focus was put on him until the midgame where you see him again, when the plot moves forward im invested but when nothing happens im bored as hell and skipping it until we meet thor again, i really feel like thor needed much more screen time especially being a mirror of kratos

I think the thing with Ragnarok is they have to tell the story through cutscenes and dialogue. Not to mention side quests are part of the story as well which help enhances the overview narrative imo. This is a problem since some people play these games differently. I’ll say 2018 has a better story but Ragnarok is the better game overall

Gow3 is a fukn masterpiece, when Kratos was the Real god of war.

GoW2 is the best for me. The story is beautiful the combat is wonderful the music is incredible and the scale and spectacle are fantastic

Valhalla was damn near perfect to me. Literally fixed every problem the main game had and added some very high effort fan service that also pushed the story forward, all for free. Shit is peak

Honestly… Ragnarock had the chance at giving the fans a glimpse of how brutal and rage filled Kratos is. I get that the character development had to be there for future story telling but we’re talking about Kratos here. Having him rage out and putting fear into everyone around him IS his staple. Having not single killed Odin was a let down. The fight was awesome though, seeing Atraus hit Odin when it was needed.. it all felt soft/hollywood when the game was completed. A lot going on, story/character development in this game. Valhalla was a GIFT! Enough said.

I just started playing God of War 4 for the first time (first game in the license that I played) and I immediately fell in love with the story and the artistic direction developed by the team. If all fiction/artistic creations were like that, I think no one would be bored anymore. (I set the difficulty to the maximum to better feel like the character... I feel like it's going to take me a little time before I see the ending...) + thanks for your tierlist

For me 2018 is the best. I can't tell you how many times I've done NG+. Enough that all my stats are maxed and have been for a very long time. It's my anxiety game. When i need to drown out the world for awhile it's my go to. I remember in the days and weeks following my mother's death this game served as a distraction. A way to not focus on what i had lost. It holds a special place for me.

Kratos gow 3 theme is something I can never forget

The story is like a 9/10 for me as opposed to 2018 being a 10/10 story. But it felt like with ragnarok they improved what was an almost flawless game in every aspect (except the Atreus missions) and just added more content.

Agreed with everything u said. I could not put 2018 and Ragnarok in the same tier even if its very close. That “I’ve got nothing more to hide” moment still gets me to this day, it was an insane moment. O r the first time u pick up the blades again, or the moment “im dangling from the hip of the bloody GHOST OF SPARTA!”. Its just an insanely perfect game. Only criticism i have is the first difficulty spike in GMGOW mode, rest is just perfection.

Ascension i dont agree it was timing i just think with it came a lot of fear for the franchise just getting old, gow 3 was peak god of war and then ascension came and did some changes that weren't really needed they just felt like change for the sake of change which is why gow 2018 was so cool and refreshing to see. ascension is a good game but as a god of war it was pretty eh

The only difference I would have made is switching tiers God of War 1 with 3. For me, the first game has a special place in my heart because that's where it all started. God of War 3 was incredibly indeed, but it focused solely on killing the gods of Olympus. It made you feel like Kratos had lost a bit depth as a character and was just a raging killing machine where in the first two games his actions had more meaning.

God of war 2 was my favorite until i played god of war 3 the ending for 2 is absolutely goated though that shit stays in my head to this day

Great list, however, I'd have to disagree with the Ragnarok ranking. I felt the same way the first time I played, but on a replay, I realized that many of the critics are a little unwarranted ngl. People mostly complain about the Iron Wood sequences with Atreus, but that part of the story is the most important for his character, with him finally being able to be a kid for once in his life. It is such a pivotal moment for him, and it puts him at a crossroads for which direction he wants to take his life from now on, which in turn leads to the direction of the rest of the game. I can see why people find it boring, but when looking at it from a bigger picture, I began to enjoy and appreciate it a lot more. Also with Freya's brother, I argue that his sacrificing himself was honestly the only way he could have gone out in any meaningful way. Finally, I do not think that the story had too many plot lines. Everyone had their own time and place, and it all summed up in the finale of Ragnarok. None were really overshadowed or underdeveloped. Overall, I do think the game is better than GoW4, but I can also see why people may disagree.

I've also played every single GoW and have been a massive fan since the first game released and the only change id make to your rankings is that I would bump Ascension up a tier and have it be with Ghost of Sparta. It was weird going from GoW3 to Ascension and it did come out of nowhere but it did kind of make sense. GoW3 let us believe that the world was over so in my mind all that could even be made was a prequel. I also think the gameplay in Ascension was top notch. Great tier list.👍

I loved God Of War (2018) and God Of War Ragnarok! They are both fantastic games! My favorite parts of the game are when Kratos and Freya are together trying to stop Odin along with Atreus. I also love the segment where Atreus meets Angrboda in Ironwood for the first time. He's expressing his interest in her in a big way and he also acts a little shy around her too but also tries to open himself up to her as the game goes on too. Angrboda does the same and she definitely likes Atreus an awful lot right from the beginning. It's absolutely incredible how their bond strengthens throughout the main story campaign in God Of War Ragnarok too. I also love how the bond between Kratos and Atreus grows stronger as well despite Atreus pushing his father away in the beginning of the game. Even though Kratos is against Atreus making reckless decisions he comes to realize by towards the end of the game how much Atreus has grown as a warrior.

i grew up on the original god of war games and cant bring myself to remove gow2018 off my playstation even if i need the storage space and i replay gow3 yearly and am currently replaying gow2. this tier list is exactly how i wouldve made it too, every criticism are the exact same ones i have. banger video dude, glad to hear opinions about the game from someone whose clearly sunk a ton of hours into the series.

When I was a kid, now I’m 21, I was shocked by the violence and gore of GOW3 , and I never cared for it (please read until the end) until I heard the 2018 game and I was like 16,and I actually liked the game but never watched the full game and never understood well the story so I moved on again. In 2019 I became a game dev and saw the importance of videogames in life and after Ragnarok came and improved it in every aspect of it’s predecessor, I actually read a good amount of lore and a quarter of my free time in 2023 and 2024 was dedicated to watch other people play, mostly Marz and Kastaclysm (I was just love to watch girls play this type of games because they admire and apreciate the little details in character models, environments and even story, and I apreciate everything) so…. , for at least 200 hours of God of War Ragnarok and 2018 combined and I also see those videos without commentary that have at least 15 hours with the full game so I can take my own conclusions. I didn’t buy the 2018 on PC because of the enemy variety but I’m considering on buying because of the story and I’m waiting for the pc port of Ragnarok and don’t have a PS5 because I have an expensive PC and I prefer that platform! Nowadays I’m almost as obsessed with God of War as you and every now and then I comment or post or use a quote of Kratos from the newer games and some of the older as well. I loved God Of War Ragnarok Valhalla as well! I thought it was absolutely amazing! The roguelike genre with this expansion is out of the park! I loved how the enemies would change with each run and how the realm of Valhalla offered you different choices each time too.

GoW 2 still peak for me I played them all... GoW 2 just speaks volumes for me the amount of focus I had to do just to finish the hardest difficulty was sweaty and also the fun "challenge of the titans" version of bloody palace from DMC but with conditions. I like GoW3 fights but GoW2 pacing was better for me overall. GoW4 has issues with enemy variety but the combat is something I'll play everyday since I'm getting old. Valhalla is absolutely a love letter for the fans.

If they had an option like auto open all chests, collectibles and stuff like they did in valhalla id rank ragnarok higher. I understand peoples criticism of ragnarok and i think you made good points. Im definitely a ragnarok apologist, it is my favorite game. But what you said about ironwood being cut in half and that time going to ragnarok was super true. The criticisms are fair. I just think the gameplay even compared to 2018 was just so flawless and so engaging. The writing was so great. Idk, its my favorite game of all time. I am very excited to see what comes next.

I think ascensions release timing is what hurt it most. Story wise i think it was good if you understand the story of the other games but the combat and overall design of this game is one of my favorites from that era of gow. Not to mention it's probably the best design of the blades of chaos imo.

Great list. The thing with Ragnarok is that it’s still an amazing game on its own - but when I start thinking how it’s potentially the last game with Kratos as the lead - it doesnt feel as satisfying as it should. Maybe I was expecting too much, or was expecting something different, but it’s just not on the same level as 2018.

Used to hate 1, but the gods filled my brain with eyes, granting me the insight to finally realise that it's not only great, but my fav. Would definitely put that at the top and all I'm gonna say is, imagine 1 but remade and with 3's gameplay. You're welcome. Still holds up gameplay wise though, some combat could be cut and that'd be ok too, the greatest part of the game is the unique level design, the and the puzzles, it's almost perfectly crafted and paced. A fascinating journey of a mortal, becoming a god and the most human we've seen Kratos as, when i tell my kids about God Of War, I'm not even gonna mention Ares, I'd tell em Kratos is the god of war. I'm putting Ghost Of Sparta right next to it because of the more depth it gives to the character, gameplay wise it also slaps, thanks to the bosses and areas too, most importantly. Deimos. God of war 3 goes with them, don't even care about the story here, nor the level design, there is only 1 good puzzle but that's ok, enemy variety goes hard and the boss fights even harder. The scale of this game will never NOT be impressive. The rest are the rest. I mean 2's alright. An improvement in many ways, but insanely inconsequential to me, so it's always forgettable. Icarus wings and Zeus betrayal is great and all but they couldn't carry this game for me, i kinda got bored. Same with Chains Of Olympus which I'll put right here too. The few good scenes these games have are not worth it for me to complete and revisit these games. There's a review of God Of War 2 here by RedGuy who explains my feelings perfectly about God Of War 2. 1 is so much hype in comparison for some reason idk, objectively 2 might be but idk. Idc about Norse GOW, it's just a poor man's Bloodborne to me. Funnily enough they had an Easter egg of Bloodborne in Ragnarok, The Last Of Us 2 did a similar thing but with a Hotline Miami Easter egg. Gotta love it when devs showcase products that are superior to theirs lmao. Idk it's kinda embarrassing for me to try these games at this point, probably gonna have the same feelings i do while replaying 2 and Chains. Still wouldn't rank them lower than Ascension or Betrayal though. I mean who even cares about Betrayal. Ascension had that fix and corrupt thing? Cool. Combos ruined when you get hit? Cool. More humanity to Kratos? Very cool. Anyway Norse GOW is kinda mid to me, again the few good scenes can't save it, the one where he picks up the blades and "Do not be sorry, be better" to be exact. Fantastic. Goosebumps. Ragnarok does what Norse GOW did but better AND worse. The good is done better and the bad have been done worse, idk how they keep outdoing themselves like that,but congrats? I'm glad we're leaving this era behind us 💀 it gave us a good Matthewmatosis Case Study while it was at it. Fantastic video Valhalla kinda carries from what I've seen, for the first time with these games. I'm actually intrigued. A story that has everything to do with Kratos instead of EVERYONE else around him? Count me tf in. Mimir is also fantastic, i so hope he remains a permeant character by Kratos side

I like the list, it feels fair. Ragnarok does have the highest highs, but no way it has the lowest lows. In the greek ones, 1 was always awesome, fresh and fun; but 2 had lower and more boring parts that Ragnarok. The formula of complex characters with simple story is not a real theme: The complex characters are just Kratos for the first 2 games and he is quite one-dimensional in both. He seeks forgivenes for his actions, doesnt fight Ares out of revenge but because he is told to, and in 2 he is a bloodthirsty monster that when backstabed fights back and will seek revenge, but he isnt treated as someone other than a warrior fueled by violence and his goals. Who is the complex character in 2? They arent complex, most of the time they arent fleshed out, but hold power in the story, provide plot twists... This is why I would say 3 and 4 are the correct stand alone top tiers, because they are the ones that develop and play into Kratos' complexity and introduce good deep characters into the story (in 3 Athena shows some weird colors, you get this moral dilemas provided by Pandora, Zeus is developed as the antagonist and his motives...). The simple story is also not really true. While the goal is set at the start for most of them, the story is quite intrincate with a lot of turns and plot twists, not as simple as chasing the goal. I'd say 1 is the least complex of them since you venture into the maze on top of Cronos, die and come back through the digger's grave and complete the goal. But 2 and 3 takes you places, have weird encounters and face different challenges, and in general have a richer journey. 2 was an incredible game, but I feel people give it things it didnt have, and nostalgia could be a factor. I have played 1, 2 and 3 a month ago and they are as good as I remember, but a lot of things you mention arent there really, and they shouldnt be because that's not who they were.

I feel like Ghost of Sparta is the most underrated GoW title and I definitely feel like it deserved Titan ranking personally, but I definitely think 3 deserves God tier, it also didnt feel right to me to split Ragnarok and Valhalla as Valhalla cant be played by itself, its not only physically part of Ragnarok but its also the epilogue, so because of that i woukd rank Rag and Val as a single experience in God Tier

Overall good tier list as far as placement goes, i would consider god of war my favorite series of all time as well but man some of your explainations for the older games feel like you havent played them in years and talked about what you remembered, For god of war 1 (my personal favorite) You mentioned the story (actually you just kind of mentioned ares) but failed to mention anything about how it is beautifully layed out in flash backs or how it introduced the most iconic weapons of all time in the form of an oath to a god that led to the killing of his family. Even if you dont feel like that is important to talk about as most people will know the story you failed to bring up all 3 amazing boss fights, weapons and magics that were ahead of its time, puzzles and art style that drive the game forward but instead talk about a phone number easter egg that most people who have access to youtube do know about? At the end of the day is doesnt matter what i think but if you continue to make videos i leave you with the feedback of just making them a little more structured and plan your words as i can make a case like this for multiple games youve talked about. Overall good rankings though.

To be fair man uncharted 2 is a great game lol. God of war 2 is still my favorite in the series I'm beyond pumped for this remake or remaster for the older games that's going around. I'll never forget the my dad having to buy god of war 1. I got a gameinformer and god of war got a 10 out of 10 which was very very rare in that day. God tier game god tier series.

I definitely agree with almost 100% of this list, but I think separating valhalla from ragnarok is a bit dumb. I get it, Valhalla was beautiful, and it was what ragnarok needed to feel full, but it is still in the ragnarok video game. That would be like someone separating any from software dlc from the main games or separating tlou left behind from tlou. I have personally never seen anyone split the dlc from main games when ranking. For me, valhalla is what pushed ragnarok above 2018. Btw it would have been cool to know your thoughts on GoW ascension multi-player. That mode single handedly pushed ascension over ghost of sparta and chains of olympus (gameplay wise) My favorite is GoW2 though, the set up for GoW3 was amazing
