The outfit she was wearing wasn't anything we decided on, just what she was wearing when she arrived. Usually I would ask them to wear specific things, or supply outfits, however in this case because she was nervous, I thought it would be great to film a 'warm up' before jumping into styling.

This was all 50mm. It's not ideal for getting in a bit tighter with head and shoulder images, but it fits my approach for half body portraits.

This will be for a new channel where I will discuss both the techincal aspects of studio portraits, and then videos where it's put into practice (much like this one)

You won't believe this, but I was/am a shy person. I sort of seeing like I have a screen/photography persona which helps me. Also not fussing about technical parts helps me concentrate on building rapport. When it comes to 'rules' in portraiture - depends who you're photographing for. Yourself - do what you want A competition - you'll have to be aware of the things judges would mark you down for (cropping, truncated limbs etc etc) The only two 'rules' I kind of abide by are: legs crossed so as they go out of frame, they taper inwards not outwards (tapering inwards suggests the legs getting slimmer, outwards suggests thicker) Involve the sitter as much as possible in the process!

Thanks for watching - by making a point that we're shooting video I'm acknowledging that aspect. Dismissing it in a jokey way IMHO deflates its presence in the room. Its early, I hope that explanation makes sense?

There is spill from the Portalite onto the background. that's where the light is coming from. Generally speaking I don't light my backgrounds at all. Most of my studios have been small spaces, so having loads of lights in there isn't great. Making one light play two roles works a treat for me.

Let me give you a tip. Flash has more consistent light spectrum than many cheap continuous lights. If you want to work with small aperture, flash can deliver a lot of light before your subject will squint. However if you can get quality light, and you are OK with higher ISO and larger aperture, it is good to see exactly how does it look before you press the shutter. Also your subject is not going to get too tired from powerful strobes. Either way don't be afraid to lift ISO to 200 or 400. Noise is really negligible and you will blast twice or 4 times less light into your subject's eyes.

if you look at the camera you are looking at something near. if you look through the camera you are looking in the same direction but you are looking far away. try to look at the screen and then try to look behind your screen, through your screen. feel the muscles of your eyes moving. It changes and intensifies your expression.
