This is his song about losing Annie. John used to fly into the Hayden airport, in Hayden, Co. when I worked there in the summer of 1985. He didn't have the glasses, and his hair was short then. We tried to give him the privacy he needed. I used to rent cars to him, and he was always personable, and normal.

it's a really great performance and arrangement. Wish this were remastered and offered for a new CD/Download release. I read elsewhere in the comments for this post that JD's guitar wasn't recorded for the first half of the performance due to a connection fault. This is actually serendipitous, because-aside from others who gradually join-what you hear in the beginning is just the accompanying guitarist and JD's vocals in the first half of the song and then joined by JD's guitar in the second half. It lends itself to a more powerful arrangement; building harmonic and emotional momentum as the song progresses. Quite possibly the finest live rendition of the song I've ever heard. Moving and nuanced. Today would've been his 77th Birthday. Miss you, John.

Wow! And I thought it was intentional. I could distinctly hear his guitar “joined in” at 1:28.

The acoustics of John's vocal was stellar in this performance, however, his guitar playing only starts to be heard after the song was over half finished. The sound from a background guitar was louder than John's guitar; under a headset, you can really hear it.

Yes, I mixed this whole concert for 12" video disc in December 1994 at ABC TV in Sydney. The concert was recorded in Newcastle, Australia. I wasn't at the recording but they had a fault on John's guitar during the recording of this song and it only came good about half way through the song. Normally they would have overdubbed it but he flew back to the USA before it could be done.

@@caretakercain1673 ‘like the grains in fine leather it isn’t smooth but textured’ I had to work with what I was given and did my best to make sound as good as I possibly could. Sometimes you win against the odds. I have to say that John came into the studio before going back to the USA and was quite happy with my mixes. As music mixing isn’t my speciality, I usually mix drama and docos, I’m fairly please with the results all these years later.

@@caretakercain1673 I have posted the video of the whole concert, well with a couple of songs removed by the original poster, on which I have replaced the faulty left/right balanced mix they uploaded with an original first generation digital mix I have. Unfortunately I don’t have the original vision so don’t have the full concert mix. Here’s the link on my KZfaq channel. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtp4ZqWSlarNhnk.html
