Been a plumber for 20 years. Your set up for rain collection with the overflow is decent. Any time you’re using plastic to metal make sure to use a union on each side of the threaded connection. Even us plumbers will have a leak on plastic to brass every now and then. Throw a couple pieces of scrap copper in the trough. It will keep the algae down. Don’t ask me why I’m a plumber not a microbiologist but it seems to work.

@realryandugger
@realryandugger Ай бұрын
@@bermchasin it’s like a coupling but has a gasket or mechanical compression joint that are joined buy a single threaded nut. So even if a joint leaks down or up stream the single nut can be loosened and the connection that is leaking can be removed, then re done (tape,dope, re assembled) then reinstalled without cutting pipe and replacing fittings. Glue joints leaking don’t apply only mechanical connections.

For protecting the hay/feed from any leaks, I would suggest creating a low rack that would lift the hay/feed off of the damp concrete. Doing this would offer protection from a leaking cistern system or any other leaks that may occur.

Wrap the threads on the copper pipe with Teflon Tape in the same direction of the threads. For the camper/parking spots, put in stakes coated with Florescent Red paint 0:01 to mark out a 10 ft wide driving lane between parking rows, easiest is to buy 3 gallons of Exterior paint with 1-1/2 paintbrushes from the local hardware store or Lowes. Lay the stakes next to each other to coat them en-mass, turn 90 degrees & repeat until fully coated.

algae is a plant, sunlight makes it grow, a roof over it will help keep direct light out, and the tub is black so it shouldn't let any in from the sides and that should really cut down on it big time. id suggest just moving it inside the building as the easiest solution to the algae but then you will have water in with the hay and thats not great.

Old school Pipe leak repair: Cut a piece of tire inner tube 1/2" - 1" wide and 2'-3' long. Wrap the ribbon of rubber tape around the leaking seam, pulling very tight as you go until you reach the end and hold in place with a piece of bailing wire, a layer of electrical tape or a tie wrap. I wrap my tape before the leak to after the leak and back to before and aft... quadrupling the layers with building compression. It is permanent.

Excellent rainwater recovery system, particularly your overflow device - I like it. Like yourself, we found utility in having a similar system, albeit slightly larger. Our barn roof is 2200 square feet and our tank is 40,000 gallons, which after a year is now finally full. The tank is fed from dual 4 inch PVC pipes and the overflow is on a single 6 inch PVC pipe. For those who are curious, input equals 2 x pi x r squared = 2 x 2 squared, equals 8 x pi = 25.12 square inches of input pipe. Output is just pi x r squared = pi x 3 squared = 28.26 square inches. Essentially, it is impossible for the inflow to the tank to exceed the outflow when the tank is full.

This epoxy putty stick can be used in a variety of projects such as building, plumbing, repairs, and craft projects. This epoxy is resistant to water, oil, gas, and most chemicals, so use it in household plumbing projects. A tip for the rain water collection is to have a dead leg below the downspout collector, with a drain plug on the bottom. It will collect the first bit of water that washes the dust and crap off the roof, keeping it out of the collection tank and water trough. Probably not as big of a deal for goats as for people, but I figured I'd share it anyway. Some put a float ball check valve at the top to seal it off when full also.

You don't have to do anything, but I would suggest putting a small solar panel + charge controller and just like an old RC car battery (that can maintain a few watts at 12 volts 24/7) on your goat shack, adding a sensor to both the barrel and the trough, and setting it up so you can monitor remotely. Last thing you want is being busy for a few days longer than usual and your goats not having any water in the heat of summer, if you can just get a notification when either the trough or barrel is too low that would let you know to go help them out.

When you get that drum filled, put a valve on the END of the hose and you can walk down there and shut if off when it's full.

@piquat1

@@twiggss4344 No! You turn it on at the source, walk out there ONCE and turn it off and the source when it's filled. Then shut it off when you're back up at the source. I can't believe he was making two trips. Hose end valves are CHEAP in a hardware store. I have a few acres, no way am I walking 200' of water hose twice for nothing.

Did you put cement in those holes before you put up that sign? That rain collection unit you put up is genious. I love it. I am getting nervous for your big solar "Sun" day but I am so stoked for it too. I am praying for no clouds. For me here in Georgia as well.

I remember the one you made for the chickens. I shared that video with one of my best friends who owned a small farm with his wife in Virginia. He was complaining to me and another friend about having to carry water for the chickens and ducks all the time. Plus, he was an airplane pilot and flew a lot. He wanted to make it easier for his wife when he was out flying. I don't know if he ever built it or not. Sadly, he passed away early last year from liver cancer.

why don’t you leave the water hose on all the time and just put a shutoff valve on the end of it

Or a Bluetooth connected valve he could turn on and off with his phone instead of walking back and forth.

Just a suggestion for the water system.🐐🐐🐐It would probably be a good idea to put a screen at the top of the PVC pipe that catches the water coming off the roof to keep leaves and other debris out of the system. It could even be clamped with the clamp you already have there. Love your system. The range is definitely epic!!

@matt carriker Flex Seal Tape will hold it, especially if you drain the tank wrap the fitting then let the tank fill but it’s says you can put it on while the fittings wet and it’ll still work I always try to dry them first though

You should build storage shelf that will get the hay off the ground and use food safe plastic storage barrels for feed to keep everything dry. You should also get larger water storage tank!😍😍

was just watching cleetus and crew putting the new grass on the track, made me think of the grass you put out at the mini range and i had a thought. If any of its still surviving you should do a miniature version of the freedom factory as an RC truck track out at the resort, im sure that would be something linc would have a blast building and using.
