The sluice was running fine. Just looks like you were digging overburden. Learn to clean off that and just take the bottom inch. Crevice and snipe the bedrock. Yes, quite successfully with a metal detector. Want to see? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oK-pqLeb3bDTqqs.html

you pan till you find a pocket then use the sluice to speed up the recovery of moving material . Pan full should have 10 or more flakes to start using sluice , and after every 4 or so bucket do a test pan to make sure you are still on the gold .

Both of them are great. Also check out "Two Toes" (he's in California) and "Vogus Prospecting" (he's in Australia). The water flow looked light. Try to get a drop of 1 inch per foot of sluice length. Boil holes (the first spot you were going to check) can be good if they are packed tight with gravels/rocks. That one looked a bit iffy though but you don't know until you try. Keep it up though hon. Practice, practice, practice. Great vid and adventure!

That’s a nice Keen super sluice and can pull the finest gold out of stronger flows. The expanded metal and miners moss create drop zones that capture something that is 19 times heavier than water. The time on a rippling creek is worth more than the gold. Good luck. 🍀

Hanna when you decended the hill full of shale I am glad you did so without harm! I also remembered at that moment the words of our Ranger instructors when we were carping about a night time training effort requring us to move down steep terrain in Utah with a 360 degree live fire range fan. I was picked to be company commander that night and i quipped "this is going to be challenging" and they flat out told me a line that stuck with me throghout life along that i am sure other Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and AF PJs in the class probably recall..."Suck it up and drive on Ranger!". Anyhow I enjoyed your video!

You definately don’t have too much water velocity as long as material collects begind the riffles. Remember inside turns on a river are best and if you have lots of crevices in the bedrock this is also good. Find yourself some solid dental picks or the like to scrap out any fine crevaces, small nuggets get driven down into them and will need to be popped out. Nothing wrong with what you’re doing. Best of luck !

LOVED THE VIDEO !! And looking for gold is my Favorite thing !! And you did great setting up your sluice box !! I live in Alaska and got into gold mining a long while ago , and i started out just like you , and even have the same sluice you are using today !! Classifying dirt is a good way to start and prospect new places for gold !! I do recommend getting some crevice tools for working bedrock !! Its a great way to find more gold !! And Keene sells a stand to run your Sluice box in deeper water , a plus to get your box running. Today i have 160 acres in gold claims and own 4 dredges of different sizes 2.5 to 6" and all the dive gear !! I also have the Gold Cube for clean up but also used it when i first got started as a 2nd step up from the sluice box !! I added the classifier & Trommel to run more dirt and it's a great way to run your dirt as a stand alone unit !! Another Plus to the cube is Price !! I have the 4 stack but the 3 is perfect !! 99.99% of your gold is going to be on the first Tear under the slick plate , and 2# you have about a half cup of material to classify when your done !! :) Sorry for the LONG REPLY , LOL But like i said I LOVE FINDING GOLD & wish you the best of LUCK in your adventures !! XOXO From AK.

Like the saying goes - Gold is where you find it. It is also easier with a metal detector. Even a small one passed over the dirt before you put the dirt in the sluice and saves time. Nice spot but....a woman alone in the woods - you be careful.

A couple decades ago I had taken my Family, then spouse and our herd of 4 kids to Alaska (13,500 round trip by Truck and Camper) all the way up the Haul Road to Prudhoe Bay...and back. We had an opportunity to pan for some gold...I recall the look on my #2 Daughter's face when she saw that we could get gold for free (with a bit of work of course). Other chillins were excited as well. Great trip, Great memories. Best

I went through a gold diggin faze a few years back. I tried the north fork, and the middle, and even the Bear. I worked my butt off and only found flakes :( It's freakin hard work! It's funny cuz I had a pan and a sluice box identical to yours. I probably bought them at the same shop since it's still open (I think). The only thing that surprised me in this video was how empty Ruck-a-chucky was. Maybe people are afraid of fires or something. It's usually crowded. You could try the south fork in Coloma. That's where the gold rush started. It would be an interesting video with all the historical sites n junk. Keep truckin!

I panned for gold in Alaska where my friend lives. I found some gold. He has 2 claims and has his sluice and everything. You don't want a strong current in your sluice. Your first 2 riffles in your sluice are the ones that do the work, only allow about a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch of water entering your sluice. Keep proping up your feed end of your sluice till you have proper flow. If your first riffle isn't clearing out quickly and properly place a small rock in the middle of the feed end of your sluice. The rock can create a little back flow and cause proper cleanout of your first riffle. And put your dirt in behind the rock and let it flow itself.

I tend to have my best luck pulling dirt from the downstream side of large rocks and boulders that are in the water already, of course the outside bend on a stream bed of solid rock works best for me. First I would like to say, a bad day panning for gold is better than a good day at work. Second, I have used a sleigh box and still own it. Finding nuggets are harder then you think. Flakes are easier. An old miner once told me to never give up, you sill find the gold when it wants to be found.

you have to keep at it Hannah, sometimes i spend a whole day shoveling and putting it through the sluice . It pays to try a few pans to see if there is gold in the area before spending time in an area. It is best to try on the drop side of the creek which is normally on the inside of the bend. Sometimes it is best to get into some tight wash and try to work down to the base rock or bedrock. crevices in the bedrock will hold gold so it pays to get into these as well, good luck. I am enjoying your vids Hannah, keep them coming. cheers, Trevor Cozens, Picton NZ.

The estwing black pans with different size riffles are quite good because the bottom of the pan is fairly big for washing back the black sands. The garrett super sluice pan is even bigger but costs more and you need to be a lot stronger to use it. I've just got the garrett gold trap and the little finishing pan and the estwing.

Get a Garrett Super Sluice gold pan, they are the best! Never put dry material in your sluice box, only wet material, otherwise the small gold will float on the top & wash right out over the riffles. The water was almost too slow still, you need good water flow to clean the light stuff out of the riffles so the heavier gold can settle in the bottom. Prospecting is hard, but don't give up! Think of it as a fun hobby & not a money maker & it's much more enjoyable.

a wide rock on top of sluice will help hold it down. 1" drop for each foot of sluice length. top of sluice, water should be deep enough to form a V down to about the second riffle. to low of water, build a dam. gold will carry on the inside bend of stream and down stream side of bigger rocks, boulders. keep it up, being out in nature is a treasure in itself!

Fun adventure, even if you don't strike it big. I am in SE Ohio, not known for gold, but I do have a creek that runs across my property so though I would give it a try. I used a Grizzly gold trap and then panned the concentrate. Quite a bit of black sand, and actually found a half dozen flakes. Will never pay for the equipment I guess but still a fun experience, and I have a little glass vial with some glittery flakes of gold to show off.

If it were easy, everybody would be prospecting. Don't know much but I've watched enough gold rush to know that the angle of the sluice has to be dead on for result should there actually be gold, and like another comment was said, bends, in the river are best. Good luck, fun to watch.

It would help if you put some miners moss on top of carpet the keene came with. Also you have to put the expanded metal in with the right side up. With the expanded laying flat on the sluice one side has a bevel in the diamonds the bevels should be facing down so that there is a lip between the carpet and the bevel. Those tiny pockets will trap the gold. If you put tha bevels up the tiny gold will just slide off. Heavy pans 🙂👍

Hi Hannah, Gold panning is so much fun. It looked like your sluice was set pretty good. I don't know if anyone else mentioned this yet, wet your classified materials before you run it through the sluice. Dry gold will wash right through. Gold flakes float. After you clean your sluice into your bucket, pan the concentrates into a tub but add some jet dri to the tub. It breaks the surface tension so the Gold will sink in your pan. Even if you don't find Gold the beauty of the outdoors is the treasure many of us look for.

A sluice box is the way to go you can move a lot of material quickly. If you feel like the water is moving to fast you can raise the backside up to decrease the pitch . Looking at the video on it looked like you had it set up just about right. The key is to move as much quality material as possible to get the gold. Good luck and don't give up it's all about the me adventure. Thank you for the video!!!

When you think about recreational gold prospecting you have to bear in mind that gold concentrations are usually found in “parts per million” concentrations. If you think about that long enough it drives you to just dig another scoop of dirt, thinking that if you stop a nice piece of gold MIGHT be just a fraction of an inch lower, so you get a little crazy, just going after that next half inch of dirt. And yes, a sluice box allows you to process more material than a pan alone.

Good morning Hannah happy sunday. I prospect for gold too, I scrap old computers for the gold. I like your way better, standing in a creek outside in the sun. I think the water was flowing a little fast through your sluice. try again the third time is always the charm=)

If you buy or make one of those gold hand pump siphons they work great to pull everything out of those bedrock crevices.

At the base of that bedrock you looked at first had some interesting sand and gravel pockets. That would have been the first place I would have checked. There has been plenty of heavy water flow scrubbing that rock, and the base is a prime location. Nice folding sluice, mine was a solid one piece about the same size, definitely more awkward to transport.

I have to check these areas out, thank you!! The folding sluice was convenient to carry but worried some of the kinks in the fold hindered some of the flow.

Joyous and carefree video! Not many things make me anxious, but that campsite would creep out most people solo-camping, I believe. As someone old enough to be your father, I’d probably be discouraging you from doing that too often! 😉🙏👍

Hey Hannah, Scott from SC here, I know this was a while back but I just wanted to say you’re doing great!!...and you’re exactly right, the root systems with the well packed gravels are excellent spots. A lot of really good advice and tips in the comments as well. Looking forward to more like this one but I’ll be honest... I catch myself smiling during every single one. I’ve decided to get a GoPro and start filming my new adventure so I’m taking notes. Have a wonderful day!

The first place you dog in that rock face behind you there was what looked to be quartz, there was probably gold in that rock !!!

It looks like you're doing the sluicing correctly, I've been sluicing since 1980. Just keep trying, and keep the sluice at a 20-degree angle. Water flow slows down in the fall in the Sierras, you may have to place rocks to funnel more water into the sluice. Check out DMO and Zonner's youtube channel, they prospect in the Sierras and the Nevada desert.

With all the camera set up, hiking up, hiking down and hiking back to get the shot you want, you probably hike those hills 3 or 4 times. It's impressive

Hi Hannah, and yes the sluice box is the way to go and yes you need a full size pan, I always sample pan for color before I set up my Sluice so I know were the color is best and dont forget to check your talings from the box to see if you are losing any color slow the water down and keep an eye on the riffles . Remember gold is heavy when looking for paydirt look for round river rocks with minerals smaller rocks not the sand so much. May your pan turn yellow with color.

That is really awesome that you are out there prospecting and having fun. Having fun is the most important part! We all know you wont get rich panning or sluicing for gold. It is very hard work. Rather, it is the experience of being out on the river and looking for hidden treasure. That said, if you want to improve your chances there are many great channels on youtube dedicated to this hobby and how to do it safely and effectively. Safe travels young lady.

I have a claim in British Columbia Canada, right on the historic Gold Rush Trail from the 1800's. I have a few spots I work hard, but when I just go for fun and stuff, I usually get a few grams for the afternoon. If you ever take a trip to Alaska, you would be driving right through my area. And if you wanted to spend a day on a working claim, just let me know

Yes, out of all those beautiful spots, if you sample all the spots you've been to, you'll find gold and silver for sure. Would love for you to continue this trade/skill! I think this would be a great addition to the already great content!
