Love Polly, have all her albums on vinyl and yes still play them. She is remarkable doing this follies song. Why wasn't there a cast album of this production?
@cka2nd
@cka2nd 5 жыл бұрын
I think it had to do with the fact that there had been a cast album put out for the Paper Mill Playhouse production from only a few years earlier, the one with Ann Miller in the role of Carlotta, and recording rights only being available for one production within some set timeframe, but I could very well be wrong about that. FYI, I remember reading that James Goldman's widow had wanted or expected the Paper Mill production to move to Broadway; not sure why it wasn't, but I did enjoy the productio with Ms. Bergen, although it was pretty uneven.
@kenmcleod3733
@kenmcleod3733 5 жыл бұрын
cka2nd It was Goldman’s widow who kept it from moving to Broadway. He had approved lots of book cuts. Then he died. The money was all in place, but she would not agree to the transfer needs all of the cuts were restored. Part of why that production worked so well was the trimmed book.

Thank you Mr. Frazzetta! What a beautiful choice you've made to inspire the newcomers, and enthrall the oldsters! I remember her from the early TV days where we never missed her show. Superb job she did on "The Helen Morgan" TV show, so many years ago. Saw her not so long ago in "Desperate Housewives," and applauded her amazing acting. Also, her few but amazing stints in "The Sopranos," could have re-made her as a star if she'd ever decided to sing. I thank my friend Susan for sending me this lovely piece, and you for your genius in having posted it! varadero

She comes in late. She seems about 1.5 counts behind throughout the entire first section. Until the Gandhi section. I thought maybe she was doing it intentionally to be jazzy, but I think they were just not in sync. Great performance otherwise.
@EliezerPennywhistler
@EliezerPennywhistler 7 жыл бұрын
First of all, no one needs or wants your uninformed opinion. Second, it was not "jazzy" - it was an interpretation of the early-to-late aspect of the lyrics. And a good one, too.

1-No need to get nasty.2-I adore Polly Bergen. She is wonderful! So don't take it as a dig on her please. 3-My opinion is not uninformed. I am a singer/dancer/actor myself and I understand music and know this song very well. Listen to the first section again on this video and compare it to the second. She is most definitely singing behind the count in the first part. As I mentioned in my original comment, some singers do that to give the song a "jazzy' feel. But the fact that she adjusted midway leads me to believe otherwise. It's just an observation -- it doesn't take away from Polly Bergen's amazing abilities as a performer--if anything, it shows how she can think on her feet and adjust. For all we know, she may have had trouble hearing herself live or the feedback monitor may have been off, etc...it's not uncommon. oh and 4-Chillax.

@@TheStefanSittig I would agree. She was singing the song in a venue different from the one she was used to, with maybe a different orchestra (not sure.) I think she was also thrown by the applause at the start of the song, which she likely wasn't used to when singing in the context of the play.

The Drama Awards are a one night, one rehearsal kind of event. Often the sound is not perfect at these things. I actually understood every word and have nothing but praise for Stern's playing.
