Good video ! I wanted to point out a mistake with pacman, the "--needed" argument does not install additional packages, it rather means to skip (not reinstall) already existing packages on the system even if explicitly mentioned in the command, e.g. useful in scripts. The whole plasma environnement and apps were installed because "plasma" and "kde-applications" are groups and not specific packages

About the 34GiB of storage, remember that you have so many unnecessary applications (mostly from KDE) and their dependencies and also the downloaded packages on the /var/cache/pacman/pkg. I just check my cache folder and is 25,9GiB... One sudo pacman -Sc later and now down to 7,5GiB!

Not going to lie, I was surprised with the full package install hdd space being 30GB! That's even more than windows!

The hardest part was doing the initial wifi setup. The second hardest part was making sure that iwd was added to the installation. In addition, I added all the kde software as well as xorg. If I forgot anything else, at least I can now connect to the internet using wifi. It's very hard to install stuff without it as a wired connection is not an option.

Why not just choose profile "Desktop" under installation and that would take care of installation of Plasma 6? That is what i did with one of my laptops....works fine.

I couldn't do it from fresh install, kept erroring when trying to install kde, had to do this way for it to work

Tried it 3 times, didn't work once, Plasma 6 wouldn't install. So I just did manual install in the end

Interesting. I had my share of Manjaro about 3 years ago, just because of KDE. Used for a year and gave up, excessive updates and always breaking something in between. So went back to Ubuntu, but for the past 6 months switched to Debian 12 and very happy with it. Not going back to Ubuntu anytime soon, or probably never (never say never).

Hello, About a year ago I also tried to install Arch Linux via the script - which is not a big challenge. However, the end result was completely unusable every time. If this really works now, that would be good news for all not so experienced users.

Earlier today I installed Arch Linux ARM with KDE Plasma 6 on my Rock 5B, and it works great... I did it the easy way with an installer I found for ARM64. That's how it should be. Easy. Archinstall makes it easy, but the way you did it is super confusing for people that don't know Arch or Linux overall... You didn't need to chroot into your base install to do all that you did... You could have booted straight into the fresh install and do the same stuff you did in the chroot. Immediately after you run "systemctl enable sddm" and "systemctl start sddm" SDDM will load up. I don't run KDE here (I run Hyprland) so I don't remember exactly how it behaves on x86, but yeah.... Also I concur with people that say you should/could have selected the Desktop profile and then selected KDE Plasma 6 as the DE, and it'd have pulled down all needed to get it working. With all that said, that was my $0.02.

i used archinstall to install KDE and out of the box by default it didnt even have a program to view images, its missing very basic features. how do you get a fully featured kde install on arch? seems like big hassle.

it is still provided with KDE for now, you can choose it in the log in screen after you reboot or log out, I have it on a recent install

I originally had your comment as "how do I activate Xorg if I'm not using wayland" somehow, again sorry

You can clear the terminal by pressing control+l. No need to type: clear. I thought the Arch install script offered desktop selections in it and that you didn't need to chroot in anymore?

I usually alias 'c' to 'clear' just because it's the same amount of key presses as ctrl+l but I don't need to reach for ctrl

@@kyedav CTRL + L works in every terminal (even Powershell, CMD, Chrome etc). It also won't get added to your history.

If I'm not mistaken, nano is outdated. Mirco is supposed to replace it. Cause micro looks to be more a text editor rather than a vim. Better shortcuts, better copypasting, search, etc/. PS The guys who develop Plasma still consider a 320x256 monitors a compatible device? Those shadows, colors, subpixeling, smoothing looks UGLY in 2024. V5 looked more fresh and pleasant. I'll be with my Fedora and Gnome until those guys buy a paper calendar if they are not able to read a date in a device.

I tried this on VirtualBox and got as far as the login screen, but after logging in, I just get a black screen. Any ideas? VM settings: 128 GB disc space 16 GB RAM 128 MB Video Memory 8 CPU Cores Edit: Switching from Plasma (Wayland) to Plasma (X11) at the login screen worked for some reason.
