In the script for the film The Janitor (Jake's older self) was supposed to sing this while the younger Jake sat in the audience and mouthed along. Curious if Kaufman changed this because he learned how good of a singer Plemons is.

Probably lol, but I guess it adds that the janitor would rather picture himself as his younger self with an old man's makeup rather than what he really looks like. Which makes it more heartbreaking to see as it looks so awkward and made up.

This version of the song has so much more vulnerability than any other performance I’ve seen, I think it really ties into the movie despite how abstract and random it seems. But then again nothing really made much sense if we’re comparing it to traditional film lmao, so it makes sense within the strange yet beautiful context of that story.

it’s genuinely one of the most incredible films i’ve ever watched. i’ve only ever really seen jesse plemmons playing side characters, and seeing him play such a deeply complex main character was really moving - genuinely he has so much depth as an actor. even the first time watching this scene despite it not 100% clicking until after this it made me bawl my eyes out and i didn’t even know why, just so insanely moving. kind of a mark of an incredible performance and incredible director that i felt that way despite not being 100% certain on the actual plot of the film until right after this, i hope his incredible performance opens doors for him in the film industry now because i’m very excited to see his work in the future now that i know what he’s capable of

After listening to Shuler Hensley's version, it's chilling how much more self-aware this version of Jud is. "And a dream starts a-dancing in my head..." - he sounds weary, like he has been there a thousand times, compared to the 'original' version where he allows his fanciful dreams to take him to a happier place.

Most versions of this song have a deep powerful sounding baritone, but his is a much lighter tone quality which I like. It adds to the vulnerability of the performance. We all want to see ourselves as Curly or Laurie, the attractive idealized match made in heaven, but really we’re all Judd, the awkward, longing misanthrope who ends up dead and doesn’t get the girl.

@@b3u3g3g3y I'm guessing the actress they picked on that musical wasn't blonde. They must change the lyrics depending on the hair of the girl they're talking about. Jake in that case (not entirely sure Jesse Plemons' character's name was Jake, but whatever) must be talking about an old lover that he lost or a certain part of him that faded away (which is represented by the woman in the film, who has tangled hair... not long tho).

@@mauricerodriguez2138 well in the book (SPOILERS) the janitor imagines what a relationship would be like if he was really Jake instead of himself and the girl. They didn't really exchange numbers or anything. They just had a conversation and the janitor being the loneliest old man, imagined what it would be like if they were together, but what i still don't get is does the janitor want to be Jake or is Jake another person in his head that he wanted to be because he disociates between jake and the girl before he slits his throat

I think this works a little better than other renditions because he doesnt bass the words around like other performances. It does sound a little out of character for the... character, in the musical, but it makes up for it by being amazingly sung.

Personally I think Oklahoma works best when Jud has a really powerful beautiful voice. It shows a despicable character with a beautiful trait no one else appreciates. But it works best for this film for Jake to not to have that strong emotional voice... Jake’s is weaker, with a sweet quality. Almost immature. It makes the character that much more pathetic. When his voice cracks at “pack a lies”. He never fully developed as a man. And so he never was able to fully participate in a relationship.
