Unfortunately, since David Tennant does such an amazing job as The Doctor, people tend to forget about Christopher Eccleston’s time during this first season, which is sad because he was a very good Doctor. And, as I’m sure someone has already said, “You never forget your first Doctor.” Also, John Barrowman did a great job portraying Capt. Jack.

Oh, to be able to watch Doctor Who for the first time, not knowing about regeneration and starting with Eccleston as your first Doctor. Nearly 20 years on Eccleston is still one of the greatest Doctors, series 1 is still one of the greatest series, and the finale is still one of the greatest finales… of any show. How wonderful it must be to have 9 as your first Doctor.❤ Yes, it’s heartbreaking when a Doctor you love leaves… but the joy is gradually falling in love with a new Doctor, though your first Doctor will always have a special place in your heart.

Your reaction to this may be the first time I’ve seen someone mention how David’s “that’s right; Barcelona” line signaled the continuity of memory across regenerations; well spotted! Side note: one of my favorite little moments in this is @19:45 where you can tell what the Dalek said just by the way the lights flash; a neat little bit of writing and/or cinematography.

There is something that everyone overlooks. The Doctor took that power out of Rose and put it right back into the TARDIS. He held that power for 5... maybe 10 seconds... and it killed him, hence regenerating. How long did Rose hold that power with almost no ill effects other than a headache at the end? A few minutes at least... long enough to actually merge with the TARDIS. Yet she's still alive. Makes you wonder what other changes she caused to happen... both to herself and to time in general.

I think it becomes common that every time you gain a new Doctor you instantly think of the previous one as being the best version, but then the new one grows on you so the cycle keeps repeating. I loved David Tennant as the 10th Doctor, but Eccleston as the 9th really did an otherworldly job in the role. He basically breathed new life into the franchise. Talk about having big shoes to fill and absolutely nailing the job.

I think the way to think about regeneration is that it's still "you" after regeneration, but, it's like those moments when you look back at yourself when you were younger and you're just a different person now. That's why, I think, the BBC accidentally has created this beautiful thing. What was, really, just a way to keep the series going when the first actor left, has become this very human (if the Doctor will excuse the expression) metaphorical thing each time we see a regeneration. Which is lucky, honestly, because it's real hard to make it so that death still has weight and meaning once you've killed and brought back the same character 9 times by that point!!! It works though. 🙂

It was the first night I spent at my stepdad's house and my brother and stepbrothers were all watching the episode and I joined them for a while and I became interested. For months I kept watching the taped VHS video of this finale until I almost knew the whole script. And for Christmas that year, I was given the whole series 1 DVD boxset. Series 1 will always be my favorite series, Christopher Eccleston my Favorite Doctor and Rose and Jack my favorite Companions. Doctor Who introduced me to the genre of Sci-fi fantasy and I feel that helped me become a Star Wars Fan because Doctor who was my favorite franchise as a teenager and now from my early twenties to now, Star Wars is my Favorite.

When a Time Lord regenerates they retain their memories as if they were the same person but everything about them top to bottom changes. Its even acknowledged that the brain chemistry of the person changes in the process which is why all the different Doctors have such distinct personalities. The Doctor remarked once that even though its a pretty cool trick, at the end of the process technically "someone" dies and "another person" walks away. 25:20 That's what he meant by "It's a bit dodgy, this process."

Eccleston was my first as well. It hurt me so badly seeing this happen because I could sense that something was wrong. I knew about regeneration, as my father watched Classic Who. Some part of me held on to Eccleston. It's as if it wasn't only Rose speaking as The Bad Wolf. Ecclestons' Doctor reflected the true emotional connection he has with the TARDIS. One that was needed. One that I rarely saw other Doctors do afterwards till Russell ended being showrunner. "The TARDIS. MY TARDIS. The best ship in the world."

What is the point of teleporting that tiny distance at :22? My answer lies in thinking we are seeing the endpoints of a much much larger existence. One wherein that entity began its journey when the door opened and ends it as we see, but during that seemingly trivial teleport she travelled far more than those few steps. A *moment* that ends up spanning all of time and space with the final reward and comfort being found in the arms of that which it loved. A demigod which knows its own endpoint, but which also had all the time in the Universe to pursue its goals. Anyhow, enjoy the journey. Thanks also for reminding me of one of my favorite modern Dr. Who episodes ever. You've got a lot of good storytelling ahead.

For the record, as I understand, officially the Christmas special is classified as part of the series that follows it, so Christmas Invasion is episode 0 of series 2. Also, if you recall the Doctor inspecting his reflection back in episode 1, it is implied that he very recently regenerated, or at the very least, he has avoided looking at his reflection since he last regenerated out of shame for what had come before it. While we know that the Doctor did have adventures in this face before Rose started travelling with him, the novelization of the episode suggests that, while his encounters with Rose were linear and close togeather from her perspective, the Doctor had actually been on numerous adventures between scenes, explaining the pictures Rose saw. For a third thing, the title of the episode is a clever little casting gag; it is also the name to the last chapter of book 4 of the Harry Potter books, the 2005 film adaptation of which features in a minor but important role, incoming Doctor, David Tennant.

Yes you are correct when a Time Lord's body wears out or gets fatally injured he regenerates and becomes new the Doctor is still the same person he just looks different with a change of personalities and tastes sort of like a change in your molicules but yes he does have the same memories as the previous Doctors that came before. The regeneration first started way back in 1966 when William Hartnell the original Doctor got too ill and sick to continue so the producers had to work out away to continue the show without its lead actor so the idea of "regeneration" was born and we've had eight different Doctors since then Christopher Eccleston is the ninth incarnation of the Doctor.

Eccleston is why the "Doctor Who" revival worked. The guy absolutely nailed every facet and every mood the Doctor should have; he offered the definitive performance. Of course, every version of the Doctor is a little bit different so one can argue that there's no such thing as "definitive"; but there are some character traits the Doctor consistently has, and Eccleston mastered them all. Eccleston also had the best regeneration of all the Doctors. Just the way he approached it, trying to comfort Rose, downplay how big a change he's going through, prepare her for what she's going to experience. No regeneration scene before or since has been as good.

I love your passion, but I love 10 and 11s regenerations as much if not more. I won’t say what my actually order is because I never tell someone something is “the best” when they still have so much more to come. I wouldn’t want someone to think it’s all downhill from there, because it certainly isn’t. The show maintains and surpasses this level of awesomeness in the seasons to come :)

This episode is one of the reasons why I love Rose as a companion. She's an ordinary girl who grew to do extraordinary things. She wasn't special to start with, but she changed for the better. She's the 'every girl' kind of thing.

the scene with rose telling jackie she was the one holding her dads hand when he died absolutely breaks me, for me it's the best scene of the series.

I did like the way Christopher Eccleston played the part. It was a surprise when he was cast, because prior to Doctor Who is was known as a very serious actor, usually playing working class characters in pieces with serious left-of-centre political messages, such as Our Friends From The North, or The Second Coming. The energy and playfulness he brought to the Doctor was a revelation, and the undercurrent of the traumatised veteran he portrays is masterful acting. Much though I love David Tennant's portrayal, it's a shame that Christopher left so soon. He was indeed 'fantastic!'

The Christmas specials are kind of a grey area, they're produced as the final episode of a season, but they're also considered the first episode of the next season in official listings. Basically, it doesn't really matter, but they're just 'specials', just fun one-off episodes, the season finale is what happens before the Christmas special.

well this one, coming up, is more like a tie in between the seasons, especially with the minisode...

Beautiful reaction Emme . It's always great when a reactor doesn't realise there's a regeneration coming.

Christopher Eccleston! He was, indeed, fantastic as the Doctor. He played the Doctor so well. Also, love Billie Piper as Bad Wolf. Such a twist to wrap up Eccleston's run.

This finale is the best for me out of all of them. There's a special quality to it, in part I think because of the circumstances in which it was made.
DEFINITELY NOT HAPPENING ON MY WATCH! 😒
