thanks for the tip on deep cutting a board length ways in small cuts from both sides, i needed this for that very scenario a few weeks ago.

Today I learned that I can make walnut and maple disks using my 3-D printer. They left that part out of the owners manual. Thanks for the tip Steve!

The blade doesn't need to be exactly at 90⁰ for the edge joint (although it doesn't hurt.) If you flip one board the blade angle could be anything as long as it's the same for both passes. If you flip one workpiece around it cancels out the angles and matches perfectly.

I do this even if I think my blade is 90⁰ since you can never be too paranoid (this is a Steve style joke...). However, I do still try to get 90⁰ because it makes the clamping easier, too far off of 90⁰ the clamping pressure will cause the joint to slip.

Something to try for the disks, set your drillpress stop to not cut the disks the whole way through, leave just a tiny amount before you break the back surface, then just flip it over and sand to get a nice finish on both sides without nearly as much hand sanding or "too close for comfort" sanding with a belt sander on the back.

Fun little video - glad to see a new build project. Here is a little trick on separating two pieces with double sided tape (or removing tape/stickers on general) - use hair dryer to heat the parts, then glue will be very weak.

Something you kinda glossed over that's super important for anyone doing this at home: The disks need the same diameter as the distance between the centers of the holes, or else they'll be misaligned and you might see gaps between the disks towards the top of the frame. It would be a real bummer if you went through the trouble of cutting all those disks and found that out afterwards.

Nice video! I've had good luck with finishing odd-shaped projects using a 2.5 gallon and a liquid finisher (linseed oil, mineral oil, etc.) and just dumping them in and letting it soak.

Lovely project! Highly elevated. I would echo the advice about being careful with carpet tape, for a slightly different reason. I actually injured myself a few weeks ago trying to pry two pieces of wood apart - I was trying to slide a putty knife through the carpet tape and it slipped, taking a big chunk out of my finger. It was definitely my own fault, but that tape can really stick - which made me frustrated, impatient, and, ultimately, a bit careless. I think that blue tape, CA glue, and activator is a better option in many situations, since the blue tape will usually roll away with a twist from the side.

For what it's worth you can buy hardwood dowels at stores like Woodcraft. So you could still use the table saw and stop block method. Love this project though, looks beautiful. Seems like a great way to start working with some hardwoods because you get so much of the project out of so little stock material.

The dowel method is quick but consider the grain direction. If you want to optimize material usage try a hex pattern (but you loose the ability to cut strips).

Yeah I would just buy a dowel and be done with it. Too much work with hole saws, and the additional sanding time.

This project is amazing! As always your presentation is very entertaining! When you use walnut for the frame and for the pieces is it easy to see where the walnut pieces are when playing? I guess we could always find from the holes being filled. Do we have any other wood choices for the pieces to bring a contrast to the frame? We could paint the pieces. But I would like to have the natural wood colors on these.

Is there a video that outlines the different phases in the process of woodworking? What is “finishing” and where does it fall into play? Where does sanding fall in? Before finishing and painting right? How many total stages are there??

steve i noticed you said something about jointing the edge of them boards,,,i dont know if you know about this or not but woodsmith plans has a router jointer you can build and i built me one and im here to tell you that is one of the most useful things i have in my shop,,works great,,,,just a thought,,maybe you would like to make yourself one

Haha 10:34, see id made the 1st version for my children, knowing they would loose and destroy version 1, 2nd Addition would be on display for my Grandchildren to play when they come over... Nice rebuild Steve
