The spark wheel needs the cross cut on it. That causes the flint to be sheared into tiny pieces which gives more spark. The way the wheel is now you are trying to remove large ( relatively speaking) chips which require more energy to get them hot enough to ignite the wick.

It's funny how the mind plays games.. when you watch the milling and suddenly a giant finger comes into frame only then do you truly grasp how small the dimensions really are... nice work

Thanks for being honest buddy. It makes a refreshing change to wot we sometimes see. Great little lighter anyway.

i think the spark wheel may just need to be offset from the flint slightly to catch the edge to grind more ?

I am always amazed at the incredibly clever "engineer hacks" with which you advance your projects! "Hm, how do I cut a lot of nylon threads into pieces of the same length? Ah! I'll quickly build a CNC machine for this!" This is absolute super cool! But what I would like most of all: A video (or a couple of videos) in which you demonstrate and explain your machine park! Such a machining center, which is also a lathe, milling machine and laser cutter, is a great project in itself. And as far as I could see, it's a DIY machine too. A video about your machine (s), that would be the greatest for me!

1.5mm hole?? That's huge for your normal work we see :P The first pass on the knurling tool looks similar to the pattern on the larger spark wheel, maybe you could pass it through the knurler briefly? This is absolutely adorable!! Gorgeous work!

First the cross cuts in the spark wheel need to be there for creating flint chips properly. Second reduce the size of the wick. The spark wheel is tiny and will make less sparks, so with a smaller wick you won’t need as much heat to light it. Cool project as always!

Several of your CNC guided machines seem to be on a bed made of laminated wood. I assume this is a homemade machine. Could we get a shop tour? Or even just a focus on your machinery?

Cool video as always. One thing I notice often - in basically every video - is starting with a cylinder of metal with a relatively large diameter, and then narrowing it down to something much smaller. This seems wasteful. Do they not sell cylinders that have a smaller diameter to begin with?

Sometimes it is cheaper or more convenient to waste material from a large rod than it is to buy a small rod. This is due to how the pricing works - there is the cost of material, but also what is more convenient to buy or find. If your project is small, it might be easier to get a cast-off from a shop that works mostly on larger projects than it is to buy smaller sizes from a foundry or mill. Also, one's source might be set up for mass production or mass purchase of the larger, standard sizes, and smaller ones in particular material would be special orders.

I think part of the problem is that you cut the spark wheel with a dovetail cutter, leaving it looking like a circular saw. The flint is very soft. I believe what's happening is that the spark wheel is acting like a cutter and shaving off the flint instead of sparking against it. It is supposed to be more of a percussive motion. It might work by simply flipping the spark wheel over. I doubt that will be enough friction though, maybe use a triangular file on the spark wheel, you want it to be more of a knurl

The spiral stripes in the larger flint wheel are for chip clearance 👍🏻 Also, when you observe similar small peanut style lighters, the wick is usually more exposed to the air. You could either try a thinner diametre wick, or removing the wind shielding from the top half. Also, I believe Zippos use a type of flame retardant cotton, as opposed to like a regular cotton ball. Also, is your laser a fibre laser or CO²? That was a lot of alsos. Great vid 👍🏻

I think you may be right. The point where most of the sparks happen might just not get enough air for a flame to start

Tu problema con la rueda de ignicion es que la hiciste de acero, la ruedas de los encendedores están hechas de ferrocerio, una aleacion de cerio y hierro, no de acero, por eso es dificil lograr una buena chispa.

To hold a threaded part in a chuck don't grip it directly, make a small collet by taking a piece of stock, make a suitable thread in it then cut a slit in it all the way through so you get an opening. You want a rather thin even wall thickness to get the best chance of even clamping and make sure to position the cut between the jaws. Sometimes a ordinary nut can be used as a base for this, just cut it length-wise with a saw. If your collet is made of an equal or stronger material then your part make sure to remove burrs from the cut and use a wedge to force it open or it might damage your threads. This way you could also kept the screw in the chuck after parting of the excess and thus easily chamfered it.

I think there is one more problem besides the spark wheel not being sharp enough. The wick releases quite a lot of fuel vapor around it while it's not fired and there has to be a little air circulation or space around it to let some oxigen too to make the ignition possible. Also i know that the spark wheels are made out of hardened steel so maybe all that's left to do is trying to harden the spark wheel a bit more and make some extra room between it and the wick. I hope you get to read my comment!
@michaelbernoff5701

Cross cut the wheel for smaller flint sparks and a smaller wick. The air flow slit might need widened also for the right air/fuel mix and the smaller wick gives the sparks more surface area to make contact with the wick

I'm suposse the spark wheel is to close to wick. It may be permanently moistened so flint have not contact with air and this is source of leak of spark.
