Hi cultists! In this video I'll show you how I made an underground missile silo tile. Try saying that ten times fast! This is the third video in the series following the original trench tile video and the bunker tile video.
This fashionable terrain piece will suit the fine taste of any discerning Imperial Guardsman, perhaps especially the Death Company of Krieg.
As usual I'm focusing on Warhammer, but there's absolutely nothing stopping you from using the same concept for Kill Team, Necromunda, Bolt Action or whichever tabletop wargame you prefer.

I love the shadow effect simulating the missile going on downwards. but given the diameter of the silo I'd made the missile a little bit bigger. Also I think the silo doors should be movable so you can start a game with closed doors, and if the silo isn't conquered at a given turn, the doors open and the missile lifts off. Beside of these two very little complaints, it's a really stunning piece.

Thanks! The doors are in fact movable. 😉 I agree, I'd liked to have made to missile bigger, but it was pretty much as tall as there was room for. I think there's a 3-4 mm gap from the tip of the nose to the doors when they're closed.

For concrete you can do an interesting effect by digging a hole into it and adding wire, florists mesh or security wire to get a rusty rebar effect where it's got damaged and the rusts caused spalling

One thing I've thought of, while you're casting the rocks why not embed skewers into them so you can spear them straight into your polystyrene and give them a much better hold while the glue works?

I was rewatching this video and had a question. Have you ever made your mud mix and saved it for later? I like to make 1/35 scale tank dioramas, but don't think I would need as much as you use. Wondering if I could make a batch and save the leftovers for later.

Have you tried stippling a thinner plaster mix on the concrete foam pieces after tin foil balling them instead of modpodging them?

No, I think the plaster would probably break and come off. I've used grout and glue with EPS foam.

Typically Mod Podge is added to protect against solvents and toughen up the foam (which it does poorly, but better than nothing). If you make a whitewash consistency plaster mix, I doubt it'll do any of those things. Off the top of my head, the only reason to do that would be to create a whitewash effect or a similar kind of weathering. If you're suggesting it for an added layer of texture, it could probably work, but I'd add some glue to the mix or give it a coat of Mod Podge afterwards. Still, there are probably better ways to go about it. Regular plaster doesn't have much texture to it and it isn't very durable. 🙂

I'm hard of hearing, so I appreciated the music ducking when you spoke. If the music was slightly quieter overall and the ducking was less dramatic, I think it would be less jarring while still having the good accessibility that doing it like this video provided. Edit: Headphones here, as well.

Maybe. A long time ago, -in a galaxy far, far away- I used to put a couple of toothpicks the plaster while it was still wet, so they'd stick out and I could use them to keep the rocks in place while the glue dried. Perhaps I should take that up again.

The cool thing about the 40K universe is that it's a big place, so there's room for a lot of different looks, vibes and interpretations. My own mental image of Necromunda for example is a lot more industrial and gritty than the colorful cyberpunk look that a lot of people prefer - which is all fine. :-) The looks of the different regiments of the Imperial Guard for example are pretty much copies of real world (or movie) examples of the 19th and 20th century. The Vostroyans and Valhallans are heavily inspired by Russians uniforms, so perhaps the bunker fits with them? 😄

No, none of them are my sponsors. I do add affiliate links to Amazon that people can use, if they choose to, but the income I make from that is laughable. I'd be surprised if I made 50 cents from this video. I add detailed descriptions of the tools I use, because a) I think it's helpful, because people can get a sense of whether a product is for them, so they don't waste their time and money b) people ask me again and again what this or that thing is, when I don't. Would you really prefer I didn't mention it? Imagine if the host of a cooking show didn't tell you what tools and ingredients they used.
