If you're new here welcome! My name is Laura Mullen Vermilye and I am an iron casting metal artist. Being a cast iron artist is an interesting - and at times tough journey, but the rewards far exceed all challenges. While working with cast iron to create my art I am exposed to an amazing community of artists who are as dedicated and passionate as I am. The cast iron art culture is a major influence in my life and on my work and I want to share this artistic adventure with anyone who is interested in seeing hard working people make amazing art with a hot and dangerous material. To do this, I make vlog style videos on this channel that chronicle the artwork that I am currently making and my journeys in Metalsmithing and iron casting. In between casting and metal art videos you may also see some behind the scenes footage of me roaming around the heart of the Midwest and the Ozarks. Thank you to all you folks that are as interested in my small metal project as you are in my cast iron art! Thanks for tunin' in, and as always - I love you.

They turned out awesome for the first run. When you think it’s a mistake it’s not it’s a learning opportunity! You made the right decision breaking them all into quarters. They are unique and amazing! Loved the video. You keep doing what your doing creativity is endless!

Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement! I’m definitely going to try again soon and beef up the center “X” and hopefully that will solve the issue of them breaking!❤️🔥

You can take some of the pieces arrange them like you are going to eat them on a plate and then pour some aluminum syrup on the waffle 🧇 pieces. Or you could use a different metal for your “syrup”.

Excellent work! Got mine delivered the day before yesterday. The texture is awesome! It is most excellent. The bit when you ate the waffle was fantastic! Make, fail, make, fail, make. I believe the end result is going to be great. I want one when it is perfected as well.

So glad it arrived safely! Thanks so much for snapping one up, I think there are only 8 left at the moment. Also glad you liked my little “Wait… did she just eat a toxic waffle?” joke!🤣. I of course will keep you posted as the full ones get made and become available for sale. Thank you for going above an beyond to support my artistic endeavors!🥰

Love the Waffels. You should make an entire breakfast including the plate and silverware, or in your case, cast ironware. A set of waffels, bacon, and eggs would be great!

Idea!!! Pouring brass on the waffle and then adding a small slice of butter made out of copper. Lol I am not a metallurgist but I feel like that would be an awesome piece of artwork ma'am. Just randomly stumbled on your channel lol. Great video! Subscribed 👍

Hey! Thanks for the great suggestion! The different metal variations would really look great, a BRASS waffle?! That would be so handsome 🤩 So glad you stumbled up the channel, you’re gonna give me even more great ideas in the future I bet!😀

The trick goes back to the actual batter waffle maker. If you add like a 2mm tiny spacer between the top and bottom pan, the joint between the waffles will come out thick and strong. Therefore your cast will also have a thick joint in between and less likely break. ❤️🌹

I'd love to see a second go at the waffles, but maybe this time infiltrated with resin and reinforced with filler so it'll survive. Sure looks unique :)

Oh I’ve not thought of using resin as reinforcement, that’s a great idea- thank you so much!👍🏼

There are waffle irons which do not have the dividing lines, which would mitigate the thin section issue.

Braze the broken ones back together, you don't have to arrange the pieces to bring them back into a circular waffle. stack them like you would on a plate. The brass could be made to look like butter or maybe maple syrup. Fried eggs (sunny side up) could be another project.
@CastIronGypsy
@CastIronGypsy Ай бұрын
Ooohh yeah! 🤩 what great ideas! The brass would definitely look like butter! I love the idea of the sunny side up eggs!! I’d have to make the patterns from something other than eggs tho- don’t think the eggs would hold up to the molding process as well as the waffles did!❤️🔥
@LightningFabrication
@LightningFabrication Ай бұрын
@@CastIronGypsy I Think you could use a silicone 2 part liquid mold maker for the, eggs then use a medium (like Plaster of Paris?) to make a pattern that would hold up to the molding process. Then again you could use brass for the yokes. I would suggest that you don't try over easy fried eggs, let the yokes harden up. Good luck,

Linocure is rock hard so it makes it difficult to open the mold. Try instead of 2% resin but 1% or 1.5%. It would be more gentle opening the mold. EX: 1%: 100# sand 1# resin 1.6 oz catalyst eye drop of BA1 1.5%: 100% sand 1.5# resin 2.4# catalyst Eye drop BA1

Did the waffle get thinner when compressing the sand? Maybe you can modify the waffle maker for a thicker web.

I've never put that stile of actual waffle on my plate without first breaking them into quarters. Pretty sure that's why they're shaped to break that way. Unbroken, they wouldn't be ready to eat...
@vicmiller7191
@vicmiller7191 Ай бұрын
I thought it was kinda cool that they broke the way they did. Do you thing they just needed to be oven cycled to relieve the stresses of the casting? Food for thought Dear. I am not a caster of metal so I really don't know. Thanks for sharing.

Is it worth casting the waffles out of aluminum first, fixing any undesired imperfections, then using them to make the impressions to be cast. It adds a step, but could come in handy in production.

And some of us like the taste of aluminum waffles, doesn't have that iron aftertaste :)
@waynespyker5731
@waynespyker5731 Ай бұрын
Your pattern was flawed - the actual waffle is scored to break. Make your molds as before but file the sharp dividing rib between the quarters flat to add material thickness. Take the advice to cast another pattern in aluminum to use for future cast iron production runs. Or: If you want to salvage the existing quadrants, break them into quarters, fixture each quadrant to grind the non-fill, break line, flash at 90° and polish. Making a set of 4 you could produce a pattern for a replacement quadrant with the Cast Iron Gypsy logo?

Ì think those would be fun for a stupid joke : hey would you like a piece of diet waffle? *giggles* in the end I guess a bandsaw would be better to clean them up ? Break them or not , in my mind it ends up with the purpose they are used ... so if you beef up those "intended breaking points" you leave it to the customer right?!? Have fun!

Thanks for the message and encouragement! I love the diet waffle joke, imagine I bring it out on a plate to them!!! 🤣 I think you are right, I’ll just beef up the center “X” and they should be more stable (unless dropped- but that’s most things)
