What was supposed to be a multi episode series turned into the shakedown trip we should have done before departure. We take our partially built overlanding rig Wayne on a multi day camping trip without trying out the set up first. These are the lessons we learned.
The series we we're making while shooting this video:

0:00 - 0:26 What are we doing?
0:26 - 1:06 Recap!
1:06 - 1:50 Scarecrow story

4:28 - 5:22 First night in the GFC Superlite
5:22 - 6:57 We didn’t know
6:57 - 8:13 To the next campsite!
8:13 - 9:39 Nighttime campfire
9:39 - 10:17 Early breakfast
10:17 - 12:15 Too much driving
12:15 - 14:06 everything is wet and loud

As someone who loves to get out and camp, this is honestly one of the best overlanding intro videos. Because this will be most people's lived first experience. They will buy all the gear, push themselves, and then get frustrated. Most RTTs are used once, if ever at all. Get out and camp, get out and explore, and find out if you love it. Then get wild. Amazing video as always you two!

Always so surreal to watch my favorite KZfaqrs pass through my home. I know you'd love camping and exploring in Vermont some time! No shortage of quaint coffee shops and foliage. Admittedly new England had a weird year with an especially rainy summer, which would explain why the river was so strong. Looking forward to seeing you continue this camping/over landing adventure!

Been there, done that! This is a very normal experience for new overlanders. It took me two full years to get my 4Runner dialed. I’m a neat freak, so it was unbelievably satisfying to get the vehicle so organized and uncluttered, with a home for all of my camera gear, and personal gear, and my Lab and her gear. Now it’s with great pleasure that I travel with her on our adventures.

I “rabbit holed” my way to your channel through the bathroom reno videos, and then spent a morning binge watching helicopter videos. Both series were inspiring. I grew up car camping and backcountry camping on the BC coast. It always rained, everything was wet, and if it wasn’t raining it was mosquitoes. When I camped as a single-mom, organisation was definitely key. I’m sure you’ll come up with some creative ideas. My last trip backpacking trip was 2019 camping through Germany and France with my 18 yo, and we decided after that trip…no more camping, and threw the (broken) tent away. But I have this great ultralight gear just gathering dust and I’ve seen people rig out their Honda Fits into campers. Maybe you’ll inspire me to get out this year, as long as the province isn’t on fire.

Great video! We camp in the uk, and find whenever we put a heat source in the tent, we get drenched in condensation. Warm sleep system and a good hat should keep you warm without a heated blanket. Ours isn’t on top of a truck, and we are camping in a different climate, so it may not be relevant, but might be worth some investigation. Sleeping in/on wet gear is no fun! I hope that helps…happy camping and thanks for the great videos!

We did a 16 day overlanding and boondocking trip from Washington state to AZ and back hitting up the Utah BDR trails with 4 kids and a 60lb dog in a Subaru Ascent. We too learned many of these same lessons as well BUT we did do several test runs before going on such a huge journey. One thing for us that we learned spending several days offroad was our rig takes longer to get places due to our approach and departure angle. So when planning our routes we took longer to do some of the trails then we had planned, leaving us many nights where we had to set up camp and eat dinner and clean up while battling the sun for light. Can't wait to see how your next journey goes!

Lots of great lessons here. (The portable toilet kit is on my list now.) The first time we went tent camping, we forgot the tent poles. But we had some thin rope and pennies, which we used to wrap around the parts of the tent and tree branches. It was wonky af, but it worked for the weekend.

The way you both explain things is great! I am starting van life and I took the longest trip I ever did to Virginia as a test for a longer distance trip. A lot went rough, my van broke down and I was stuck in a foreign area and it was hard to not picture the entire experience as a mistake. I learned the mistakes have to happen for you to learn if you want to make a dream a reality. Also I can’t agree more about knowing how long you can drive for at one time. I drove over 9 hours at one time trying to hit all the spots I wanted to see before having to drive back home and it was a lot. I love all of your videos and it helped me start my own travel channel. I’m looking forward to the next overland adventure and to see what you all learn from this one!

We’re always fine tuning what could be improved, what we could do without, what would be better next time. It’s part of the process. It usually is what you said, “It was fun until it wasn’t” and that’s when it’s time to go home 👍👌❤️. Good on you for giving your gear a go. Whenever we get new gear, we love to go try it out too. the GFC super lite is a well built tent but I believe it’s at odds with what I think is the biggest advantage of roof top tents. I love that I can keep my bedding including pillows inside my tent and I open my tent and am done with setup in literally 30-45 seconds. The thinner tents like the super lite leave almost no room to keep anything inside

Well shitty balls, you made it to Maine! Happy to have you two here for a few hours! So what’s your plan for when you finally make it to New Brunswick? Will you be camping with the truck, or will the Millennial Falcon be ready when you plan on traveling there? If you do end up flying, you should add KPQI to your flight plan and I’ll treat you both to some kick ass food from the area. We are like 12 miles from the Maine / New Brunswick border, so pretty close to your destination. I look forward to seeing your next big adventure, and will keep my fingers crossed that you add KPQI to your trip plans so you can see what we call ”The County” way up here in Northern Maine. We may be way past the middle of nowhere, and 2 right turns from East Bum Fukk, but it’s worth the drive / flight! Those scarecrows are all over the place in the fall. I live in southern NH and in my town the historical society sells a basic kit as a fundraiser. They are supposed to be cute I guess. 🤮🤮

If you hadn't made all of the mistakes this time round, you wouldn't get to enjoy getting everything much better next time anywhere near as much.

We have to remind ourselves that A.I. is pulling information from EXISTING sources. Whats frightening is that people are claiming that generated AI images/video as their own and publishing it.

Hope you guys dried out all your gear. That's a lesson in itself, dry your stuff immediately or it could get mouldy and you'll have to throw it out.

Hey Becki and Chris. I myself have a GFC which I love. I found out a wireless fan set on low and some venting allows for there to be no condensation build up. I have a Claymore Fan specifically. Thank you for the great content. @depthtoadventure for some of my updates.

It’s good to know what you don’t know sometimes 🫣. I liked your tip on not filling another series while editing one hahaha I relate to that heavy 😅🫣
