I am travelling throughout Japan for 6 weeks! and the trip starts here, in Tokyo. Asakusa, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara... I did them all, but not without a bit of chaos along the way. Immediately I got off to a very stressful and poorly planned start by making a catalogue of errors with trains, hotels and everything in between. But that's ok, it's a learning experience and hopefully some of you who plan on visiting will learn from my mistakes as well.
Here's some tips I picked up from this part of my trip:
1. Trains are easy as long as you are going the correct way. There's a ticket machine next to every gate, it's also a useful way to get rid of huge bank notes you may have to exchange them for a bunch of smaller notes and coins.
2. Stations in Japan can have similar names. Asakusa is not the same as Asakusa-bashi, just as Maebashi is not the same as Shim-Maebashi. Be careful to check exactly what the station you are heading to is called.
3. In Japanese restaurants, you pay at the front after you've eaten. Don't wait around ages for a bill which won't be delivered to you.
4. Never EVER go to the furthest upstairs floors in Akihabara, unless you are into that kind of thing I guess whatever floats your boat.
5. There will probably be people with petitions for things, advertising their campaign in busier places. You can say no. Just politely decline instead signing up for a bunch of things.
6. make absolutely sure that your accommodation is NOT noted down as being a Love Hotel.
