I tried some new stuff with recording. How's the audio quality sound? Also, there are some technical issues you might notice with this video. I didn't notice until the video was almost complete, but I started dropping frames towards the end of the video. Sorry about that!

It could be that they're deconstructing them rather than breaking them, to be fair. It'd be pretty difficult to start, but probably possible to get one chunk off using a nearby rock or something. After that it'd be much easier.

I consider my village finished when it hits a steady self sustaining state for 10 years at whatever pop count my computer can handle (about 600 on a small map, about 400 on medium). You'll still need to micro the market and fighters, (and compost if you're not using the mod, which you should be), but wood is actually infinitely sustainable if cleverly set up.

I'd have liked to keep going to prove self sustainability, but my computer is old and was struggling a lot when I ended the video. I'm getting a new PC which should be able to handle a much larger population and I'm excited to take one to 1k.

@@JustDontDie Running at 3x speed constantly is rough. it seems to fall into a calculation debt that just gets worse, but putting it back to 1x speed let's it catch up.

Thanks! And yeah. My non-Going Medieval videos start a bit slow since that's my main audience. Only a portion of them watch other stuff, so youtube sees a lot of people not watching it as much and doesn't promote it as hard early on.

I've found that no meat (not even fish & dairy) and no bows (nor xbows) makes for an interesting run, still on vanquisher obviously.

Ooh, that is interesting. Is there a good way to make your villagers fight with melee weapons? Or do you rely on punching raiders out?

@@JustDontDie You will need to build forts and train and equip your fighters, then micro them during raids. Early on punching is necessary but works fine.

Running a city with no mods at 1K pop, 20-30FPS with severe stutters often. With mods... Well... ~10 and the stutters? Once you start getting above 300 Pop, then start saying goodbye to those frames! Hardware: 3090 | 5800x | 2x16 4000 CL14. Main Issue noticed: Utilization, power, frame rate, heat, etc all drops steadily as population climbs. Stutters increase in severity as well. Minor workaround: Lowering all graphical settings can claw back some frames, and possibly not placebo fix stutters... But not really as you get to 1k it is irrelevant!

RIP, that's unfortunate. I'm getting a 3080/5700x/2x8 3600, though that's a huge upgrade from my 1060/i7 4790k. I'm hoping it'll help some, especially as the game continues to get developed and optimized.

Part of it is that I specifically cut out laggy footage as much as I can. This game is kinda poorly optimized (Or at least was when I recorded. I'm not sure anymore) so it may not be enough? Or it could be a CPU thing. I do have a 3080 and a 5700X processor and even I start lagging when there's lots happening, like during raids, later on.

This looks like fun, but I'm tying to justify the $30. I could wait for a sale, but I'd like a new town builder like this. Wait or buy? From what I'm seeing, this reminds me a lot of Cities: Skylines but in a medieval setting with more actual threats. Would that be an accurate assessment, or is there a better one?

I wouldn't compare it to cities skylines. That game is about building up a pretty city, whereas this game is more about surviving. Y balancing a more complex interplay of goods to grow, avoid starvation, and beat raids. I didn't like cities skylines but love this game. It's much closer to banished if you played it.

@@JustDontDie I haven't played Banished, but something about this game gave me the same general vibe but with survival elements, almost like what I wanted when I played it. A+ video, it got me interested, as do all of your videos, so now it comes down to if it feels worth the price. As an aside, you are a great at story crafting and I always love your videos; you're why I got into Going Medieval, so finding out you did DF videos made me like your stuff even more, and next thing I know I'm interested in tying new games!

It probably won't be ready for at least a month and likely more, but yes. My current computer can't handle a big village, so I'm waiting to do a 'complete' playthrough until I get a couple new parts really soon.

Why does everyone that plays this game go crazy with the roads? This isn’t sim city where you need a road to every 4x4 tile area. The only people that even use the roads are in wagons transporting goods. You can literally make a 600 pop city with like 40 tiles off road tops

Two reasons. One, they speed villagers up. Villagers will cut through buildings, but they'll take a road if it's faster. That makes a long stretch of roads connecting important areas useful. Secondly, they just look nice. Cramming everything together may be more efficient, but I personally like the look of roads and nice blocks.

I would say, ascetics? Personal goal? In my first village I used almost no roads for the houses, worked fine but it just looks like shit xD same goes with fields u can just randomly expand them works totally fine, but it looks nicer when they have all the same size :D once i played it through I set myself the goal to make a good looking city instead of just cramping everything together :D
