Nice video! Usually for games where you need tons of little tiles all interacting with one another, you just use an 2D array of data, that way all the game logic is faster and easier (no raycasts, no collision, etc.), and then draw the screen based on the data in the array. (Your solution has the benefit though of looking really smooth)
