Purchasing ethically sourced crochet garments can be incredibly expensive. I crochet my first cardigan based on Speedy's on Season 7, Ep 3 of Queer Eye. The original cardigan from Corridor is $795, and my version utilizes around $40 worth of yarn.
Get this pattern on my Ravelry HERE!

Hook is 3.5mm

I seriously watched the most complex, intense, narcissistic youtube of the making of a cardie like yours. It terrified me so much that I realised i was nowhere near that spectacular, and so I gave up the idea altogether. Thank you so much for bringing the joy, the light-heartedness, and the fearless experimentation of making stuff. I love to crochet and can't wait to make your cardie for my daughter. Hot pink all the way - I'll send a pic

one of my goals for this year is to crochet a granny square sweater but think worsted weight yarn might be too warm/hot for me. I may try cotton yarn. Thanks for the inspirational video!
@Dianafuckhandles
@Dianafuckhandles 3 ай бұрын
@@susieinthecountry4434 As far as I know, worsted weight is how thick the yarn is, and can describe yarn made of any material, whereas cotton is the material and can come in any weight. So how warm the garment will be is something of a combination of weight and material.

Yeah I like the pink too. Onscreen it does come across pretty neutral for the creators skin tone. And I think that’s the key. People need to choose colours that work for their own skin tones. Personally I do believe the whole seasonal colour theory although I just reckon I’m a winter and don’t bother with the whole kind of winter aspect..l especially as I’ve aged which has changed things. But for me I’d go for a pale icey pink and then bright or jewel colours as contrast as muted colours just wash me out. Looks like Rome reached for colours that would suit him instinctively - as most people do.

Using a hook like that would kill my hands too. My daughter gifted me my first ergonomic hook by Furls. Now I can crochet all day without pain if I want to. I know they are not cheap, but I'm kind of addicted to them now just because of the hand comfort. My daughter used to hate the granny stitch and granny squares until I started making things for my grandchildren using granny squares and the granny stitch. Of course her friends all love the outfits her kids are wearing, so she has reconsidered her feelings about granny squares. I'm loving your cardigan. Old granny tip: Block your granny squares before you put them together.

The extra material under the arms reminds me of some historical garments like shirts that have extra material there also which help to give your arms room to move. As you lift your arms up the body of this cardigan stays put where as if there wasn’t that extra material (and especially if the arm holes were bigger) when you lift your arms the body would be pulled up. So although that extra material makes for a “worse” modern fit it also makes for more freedom of movement. Gorgeous cardigan and makes me want to learn.

You’re is actually much nicer than the inspiration. I was examining the assembly on the corridor website and you can see that the ribbing is machine knitted and then sewn to the edges. The squares have even been cut and kinda mangled on them and yours is all neat and perfect. Great job. I would have used a front/back post ribbing just to make it extra squishy, but it still looks lovely.

What wonderful work! You did a beautiful job. My Nanna made all her grandbabies (both girls and boys) a crocheted vest back in the 70s! Talk about how delighted we kids were to get such a gift! I am so glad to see this is coming back in style. Our Nanna knitted and crocheted our vest very tight, so they could be worn in the winter with a turtle neck or a blouse with puffed sleeves. We wore those vests into it was unrepairable (which you should take care around pointed objects and door knobs) or we grew out of them and gave our vests to a smaller sibling. Now, here's the top secret, Big Daddy did all the knitting and crocheting together of the pieces. We caught him doing this when he moved into the pensioners home and had the market on scarves, shawls and booties! 🤣🤣😎😎 My 11yo mini-me should have known about Big Daddy being the elf on the shelf because there were 50 of us!🤣🤣😎😎Big Daddy got a huge hug from us when Nanna said he bought the wool🥰🥰 Keep it up! That is such a beautiful heirloom. How much was it in the end?

@romi Thanks so much for answering me. That's a huge savings considering the original cost €800. Even if you paid yourself $10-$15 an hour, you would still come out cheaper. As for Big Daddy, he was in WWII and learned to knit and crochet while in the Navy. He was a cabin boy as he was just 16 and his captain asked him to darn a pair of homemade knitted socks his wife had sent him as they were really warm. Big Daddy whittled himself some needles and carefully took the socks apart and reknitted them using the same wool. His captain was so happy. He later wrote home to his mum for some knitting needles and wool. Naturally, Nanna obliged him because she was getting part of his check as he was a minor. My great Nanna was alive at that time and she spun him the wool while making sure it didn't itch. Nanna sent the care package with letters from parents, grandparents and eight siblings, wool, needles, instructions, cigarettes, long johns and sweets. It got to New York on time to board the ship before Big Daddy sailed with the third wave of ships that landed several days after D-Day. Big Daddy was really lucky because by time his ship got to the Continent, the fighting was over. He had made all his buddies socks and they would talk about going over the Rhine with warm dry feet. He never talked about the war until I had a snag in my sweater while visiting the care home . Then his little secret came out.

I love your colours! A little suggestion: you can make a half granny square to fit on the shoulder. Any kind of crochet squares can sometimes be uneven, even if you have years of experience. Make yourself a block stand from skewers and a piece of styrofoam. I made a huge blanked years ago by following Kalevala CAL, created by Finnish designers. The blocking made it possible because the squares were quite big, and some turned out much bigger than others. (By the way, that CAL is wonderful! Everyone should do it.) I am so happy the algorithm got me here. Time to watch your other projects. Happy crocheting!

Hi. Really enjoyed this. Longtime knitter and just wanted to give you a tip. The best way to handle the armpit on a fitted sweater is with a diamond gusset. Instead of doing a triangle on just the sleeve, make a diamond that splits the added extra fabric between the sleeve and the body. It's how they do it in traditional Gansey fisherman's sweaters. There are KZfaq tutorials on how to do the knitted ones. You seem to be doing really well with being self taught, so I'm sure you'll figure it out. They are great because they add the fabric just where it is needed. Also, they are more comfortable and durable, as there isn't a bulky point where four seams come together. Also the stress goes along the four sewn edges, meaning that there isn't one spot doing all the work and getting stretched out. The other great thing about gussets is that you can (usually) add them to a finished garment if the arm is too tight. Just pick out the side body seam and sleeve underarm and add a diamond that will give you the extra bit of ease you need. And I think the pink is fine, but I understand something both being perfectly OK and not exactly what you were thinking of when you started the project.

Nice job, bravo! I feel you would benefit from a crochet circle or a meetup for crochet. Same thing really. Next time you want to put that much effort into a project, buy yarn from yarn shops, not Michael’s nor Walmart. I’ve crocheted all my life - and it wasn’t until my 30s did I switch and not only did I get much better results, better quality it easier to work with, but my projects lasted much longer and none of them felt stiffer over the years. Until you work with higher quality yarn, you won’t know the difference. Yes, it’s costlier, however, but your projects will drape beautifully. By joining a group, you will learn about color pairing, yarn textures, patterns and what I noticed you need in your repertoire is the correct names of stitches. Keep it up kiddo!❤❤❤

Wonderful! I love your colour choice, it suits you. On camera it doesn't look too bright, pretty neutral. What I like about us creators, if something we like is too expensive, we just make it ourselves 😄👍 my first attempt was a sweater from an OTTO fashion catalogue back in 1994-1995, I was only 15 and no chance to order expensive sweater from another country, so, I just took a magnifying glass, some yarn and copied it for myself 😄 grownups were sure my parents spoiled me and ordered this sweater from a Germany 😂 But to be honest, handmade granny square cardigan should cost like the one you chose 😉

Joining the granny squares like that is genius i dont know why i never knew that before!! Time saving and keeps the airey and stylised holes without the chunky joining lines. I fell out of love with granny squares because joining them always ruins the piece but im so so ready to fall bsck in love with them!!! Thank you for such a lovely video 💚

Thank you so much for your videos! I'm thrilled to follow someone's experiments with crochet, it's always so interesting and inspiring to see someone's process, you explain everything so well, with interesting insights, and you are overall so lovely so it's a real pleasure to follow along your crochet journey! You are adventurous and that's something I sometimes miss from the time I started crocheting ; I used to do things intuitively, experimenting things and nowadays I've been sticking to strict patterns and started to feel a bit bored somehow, until I found new techniques recently + your channel, it really inspired me to go back to creativity with crochet and it's very stimulating! So thank you so much Romi, keep on the good work, it's fantastic!

Hello from New Zealand! I’m in awe. I could sew you anything you wanted, boned, french seamed, the lot. But I can’t crochet 🧶 or knit. I CAN do the action, it just never turns out and I find the pattern are gobbledegook. Your colours are gorgeous. My SIL crocheted some beautiful squares in lush NZ merino & possum wool, put them all together…and her miniature schnauzer loved it. 😻 P.S. that armpit join was excellent!
