This delicious Picadillo recipe is loaded up with slow-cooked shredded beef and vegetables in a delicious zesty tomato and chile broth. The flavors in this recipe are incredible as this will quickly become your new favorite comfort meal.
Picadillo is a favorite dish in several Spanish-speaking countries, especially in Mexico. There are many variations to this dish depending on where you are eating and who is making it. It can have pork, beef, or veal, along with tomatoes, garlic, onions, and other regional and seasonal vegetables.
Picadillo can be as basic and as simple as can be or can be a bit more complex like my recipe. So much of the tradition of this recipe was based on what was available, and that is why this dish looks so different depending on om the maker of it. One thing is for certain, they are all delicious.

Ingredients for this recipe:
• 6 tablespoons oil
• 2 large tomatoes, stems removed
• 2 peeled yellow onions
• 3 garlic cloves
• 2 peeled and stemmed tomatillos
• 1 tablespoon cumin seed
• 2-3 pounds top round beef, cut into large chunks
• 8 cups beef stock
• 1 seeded chile de arbol
• 1 seeded guajillo chile
• 4 peeled and large diced large Yukon potatoes
• 2 large diced green zucchinis
• 4 peeled and large diced large carrots
• 4 thickly sliced leaves of swiss chard
• salt and pepper to taste

It looks great, I will definitely make it. With respect, in Mexico, picadillo is made with ground meat, shredded meat dishes are called "Deshebrada".

Picadillos are commonly made using ground beef. Every Hispanic family has their own recipe traditionally made with ingredients that were readily available depending on the region where they lived. Mexican picadillo is different depending which state you live in and defers from those in the DR, Cuba, Philippines, Puerto Rico and other parts of Central America. Looks interesting. Buen provecho!

Hi Chef, I was wondering if you meant to say Chile Guajillo and Ancho Chile, rather than Chile de Arbol. I thought Chile De Arbol were much smaller, I’m just curious, as I’d like to do this recipe myself.

I think he made a mistake. Chile de arbol are small. The one he used is an ancho chile

i think the two chilies used are are an ancho (the larger one) and a guajillo

Looks delicous. My wife is Mexican and makes the ground beef style picadillo but always served as a tostada with a little shredded lettuce on top.

Definitely making this! Most of the other picadillo recipes I've seen have olives and it just didn't sound like I'd enjoy it. But this one I know I'll enjoy. Thank you!

@@ChefBillyParisi the only reason I ask is because my family has been making picadillo forever, and the traditional sense has always been such as the word says picado, which is usually a hash...ground beef. But, I love your recipe for a beautifully rich and tasty Ropa Vieja.

Ropa Vieja would be a bit different. You wouldn’t see all these vegetables in there and the spices and peppers would be different as well as the addition of things like olives. Great looking recipe. I can’t wait to try it out. You said, use good beef stock and emphasized. Do you have any recommendations for “good stock”? Thank you. Also, going to try your corn tortilla method. Mine turned out thick and dry last time I attempted them.

I'm so confused.... what's the origin of this dish? I'm used to the traditional cuban picadillo using ground beef. This looks more like a tasty fancy stew ( which I'm definitely making and eating with no regrets)

I can't eat tomatoes and tomateo and potatoes. I substitute tomatoes with turmeric, and potatoes with sweet potatoes.

Recipe says 2 onions and 8 cups of beef broth. Video shows 1 onion and 10 cups of broth. What is it??
