I'm astonished every time you come up with your Home-made solutions. I've never thought, it's even possible to create a carbon fibre paddle literally on the kitchen table. Excellent work Jim!

Beautiful paddle. I would’ve thought a person could only get that quality level of carbon fiber manufacturing out of a factory. I thought the vacuum process was a requirement. In the past, I’ve seen some classmates make some carbon fiber things at university & it was a very messy process. They used vacuum packing and did not get as nice a finished product as you did.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. Vacuum makes the process quicker and should produce less porosity but not essential for this type of project.

Love it. You're right about the fibres, if they get in, you have to wait till they grow out and they can itch in the meantime. Love kayaks and canoes too but haven't tried bodyboarding. (I have to admit I thought porosity was a word Nick would come up with lol, but nope its real and even has its own formula.)

@JimsonMakes

Thank you for watching , I am hoping to put it to the test next week. If I did it again I would carve a foam core to give it a slightly better profile and it it take less carbon to achieve the same rigidity.

Hello dear friend . First of all Magnificent video and thanks for the great contribution. I have a doubt, could you pass me the measurement of the template used? I am familiar with carbon fiber and I am about to make a paddle for myself. I await your response and thank you again for the great contribution you give us. Thank you
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes Жыл бұрын
I took the measurements from an existing paddle I had. Best find a paddle you like and copy the measurements. It was to make my SUP paddle double ended so copied that. I think I used 9 layers of carbon. Many thanks for watching .
@cesarcarazocalderon7136
@cesarcarazocalderon7136 Жыл бұрын
First of all, thank you very much for your quick response. In the process of the 9 layers of carbon fiber, do I wait for the curing time of the resin between layers or did you put them all at once? thanks again and I will share my result with you soon. Greetings from Spain (Andalusia) ;)
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes Жыл бұрын
@@cesarcarazocalderon7136 the secret is to let each layer partially cure before adding the next. It needs to have reached the tacky stage. If you leave it too long the layers will not bond together properly and if you add the layer too soon it can cause problems with layer shift or lift. You can add a layer to each side at the same time to save time.

Beautiful job Jim, came out great without any vacuum bagging. What weight carbon did not use for the 9 plies? Cheers
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I think it was 200g. It would have been better with vacuum bagging but then the costs would have gone up.

Very well done. That is a level of craftsmanship I would never attain😁 Question: Did you think about adding a layer to bring up the diameter instead of using masking tape ? Stay safe. -Mike😷⏳
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Mike. I did consider adding a layer to the shaft but it would have made it over diameter and tricky to cut back. I still might do that, although it would have been easier to do before adding the blade.

@Steve765
@Steve765 3 жыл бұрын
So you don't need a vacuum press or autoclave wotsit to cook the carbon fibre, hmm that's good to know.
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 3 жыл бұрын
all of those things would help and make the process quicker , but the cost rises too. The key is to add the next layer before the previous layer fully cures so that you get that chemical bond. Most commercial techniques involve using carbon fibre that is preimpregnated with a heat cured resin or the piece is layered up dry and resin is drawn through under vacuum.

How did the paddle perform. As an old kayak guy I find the SUP paddle not performing as I used to using a kayak paddle. I think the solution is building a longer kayak paddle to use on the SUP
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, the paddle works amazingly well . The angle of SUP paddles really makes them only efficient when standing, proper Kayak paddles are far more efficient when sitting or kneeling . Many thanks for watching.
