Makeblock sent me the mCreate smart leveling versatile 3D printer to try out, so I decided to push my non-existent 3D design skills to the limit in order to make a steampunk tap handle to replace the one I broke. My first impressions of the printer were very positive, it basically worked straight out of the box after spending about 15 minutes putting it together. It has a self-leveling feature so the leveling process was taken care of with the push of a button. The removable magnetic build plate was great to work with, allowing relatively easy release of finished models, while still giving good adhesion. It comes with a 0.4mm nozzle. I was really happy with how the steampunk tap handle worked out, and I could see it being a great decorative piece even as a non-functioning unit.
Disclaimer: Makeblock provided the mCreate to try out for free, however, they have not paid me to make this video.
The tap handle was mostly designed in Tinkercad, a free web-based program that I found very easy to use. Tinkercad does seem to have limits in making smooth round pieces, so the original outside ring of the handle was first created in Blender, also a free, but not so easy to use program.

this is so cool! I love seeing people do unorthodox things with a medium that they are new at! I would have never thought to try the bending in water thing with PLA! I look forward to you having foam AND 3d print projects!
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, seeing how it bends in hot water was a revelation to me. There are so many projects where this ability would be super useful. And the fact that when it gets soft, it still retains its basic structure and doesn't get sticky like a lot of thermoplastics. I think you'll be seeing more of this.....

Love all your foam builds and tutorials. You inspired us to make full steampunk costumes for our boys who went on to win the costume contest at our local Con! We just got a 3D printer and have been non-stop printing. We were talking about how wonderful it would have been to have the printer to print out some of the trickier parts we needed. So yes to more videos and patterns for the 3D printer!

Awesome build! have made your steampunk arm, shoulder and gun patterns and incorporated some small 3d printed elements in each one. This handle is fantastic. super well done! Yeah, I was pretty intimidated as well at first. I can't compare with other printers, but I think Makeblock has specifically designed this one to be a bit more plug n play than others on the market. I have done about 200 hours of printing since this making video and am still really happy with how well it prints.

Nice, it turned out looking awesome. I used to work with 3D Max quite a bit in the past, and seeing this has got me thinking about what I could do if I had a 3D printer. Luckily, my library has one that you can pay to use. Not sure I can justify buying my own to the wife, unless I really start doing this kind of stuff more often. I can see potential in making some of the small detailed bits of steampunk constumes.

I love the stuff you build, and it is great you are getting into 3d printing, You may want to try using supports on your first model, or just split it in half and there would be no overhangs and no need to bend the filigree and glue it on later
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did try with supports, and it was a little messier. - Of course, I just used whatever support settings were default, so it probably could have worked better if I knew what I was doing😁 It would have been easier to just split it in half, but I do like that the swirl covered up the join line between the two halves.

Long story short... Back when tape was cool: had a 4track home recording desk: sound engineer friend told me I'd pushed the envelope of its capabilities to the max [where-as most bands used to stick a couple of mikes in and record themselves live]. By the by, your 3D printing journey brought that memory back. I think you've def pushed the envelope a good way to produce that fine piece of steam-punkery! So lots of steam in the bathroom, sit in your bathwater, [to paraphrase Steven Wright] turn on the shower and pretend you're in a steampunk submarine thats been depth-charged . Enjoy...

You can cast it in metal, they sell wax filament that you can print the whole part in, then put it in heat safe container and fill with plaster then when dry you can bake out the wax leaving a perfect form of the model then pour in your molten metal of your choice and break away the plaster when cooled and sand any defects out then you're done

Good job. I like the process - how you went from discovering limitations of printing to printing things flat to heating and bending. Very cool. There are different materials for the "enterprise" quality when you need strength or finish (like when you print drone parts). Here at Shapeways it's hard to choose a right material sometimes. And also lead times could be long. When you have your own printer - at least you can iterate on prototyping and when your POC is done - move on to MVP and print it at a vendor... Check us out. :)

Have you printed custom Legos yet?
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't yet. I know Lego pieces are tricky to get right on a 3D printer. -Which is a testimony to Lego's technology and quality control.

When can we expect the bee's legs video? Joking, of course... but also picturing a cute toy bee with badass steampunk prosthetics and not hating it.

I don't understand why anyone would use TinkerCAD. It's a really childish crappy program. That can't replicate the same abilities that fusion 360 can. So much easier to go back to a model in fusion360 and modify.
