In this video, I make a Steel Knot by Bending Rebar, without using heat.
The knot is called a Clove Hitch Knot
This knot will be used in a future Industrial Style project. I love the look of industrial-style furniture and rebar with knots fits right in with the look I like.
I hope you enjoy my video of the project, it was a lot of fun to make.
The main tools used were a Hammer, an angle grinder, and a bench vise.

I am 17 years old and I am really interested with working with metals. I make chainmail for now . I made a full chainmail coif couple of years ago and I am experimenting on new stuff now. People keep telling me why are you bothering with these. They don't understand the pleasure these simple things give. This video is almost visual representation of my feelings. It gives me joy just watching you bend a challenging knot. I can't even imagine the joy of figuring something like this out myself!! Thank you for this video and inspiration. You are amazing.

It is nice to own things that cannot be bought in a store, or give a personal gift to someone. There is a slightly different technique. A very loose and very large knot is tied on a long steel rod "as it goes", and then one end of the rod is firmly fixed somewhere higher, and a strong sling or rope is attached to the other, on which a good weight is hung. With the help of this weight, the knot is gradually tightened in jerks. You can tie very tight knots and not only the "grip" type.

That is beautiful. The best parts about the clove hitch is that it's easy to do, it doesn't slip and it's relatively easy to get it to release. You've broken it's functionality but in the best way possible.

with a very big load, I am sure it would tighten a bit but the ribs on the steel would grab at some stage and stop it from getting any tighter

Brilliant tutorial. A lot of us, myself included, have all these basic tools, and seeing your video could do...all of these steps. That's great to someone wanting to learn or extend their skills. But you take it a step further, all the small moves, adjustments. With rope I've tied clove hitches thousands of times -- I've even set them up exactly like you do, two bends, fold and then slide into place. But I would've never imagined doing what you did. You made a decorative piece, but there's so much technique and basic planning this would be a good skill to learn.

Round bar seems to look very plain when it is finished and also sometimes it looks cheap like you bought it at a budget shop, not that there is really any difference in the amount of work needed to make it, I do think a rebar security gate would look awesome. Knotted rebar like this would be pretty awesome in an industrial setting, like you say. It would really look cool if you had a series of these serving as balusters going up stairs, with the knots holding the rail.

As I watched this video, I tried to figure out why he was trying to align both whole coils into one line. It wasn't until the end of the video that I realized where the magic was: You first make a vertical knot, and it's not something wonderful in and of itself. But! When you put the horizontal rod into those knot holes, it looks like the rod to the rod has been tied like a rope. Amazing! Thank you!!!

SPECTACULAR ! When I retired from commercial crab fishing in Alaska, I started working full-time as a union Ironworker. Needless to say I'm very familiar with knots, and rebar. I'm amazed at how good your rebar looks, it almost looks like licorice. I'd also like to know how many bars you broke while bending it, most people don't know how strong rebar is, yet how easily it will break... Especially when you're bending it 360° I hope you make more videos, you killed me with the line "I'm not a good role model for it [safety]"

I did not break or crack any rebar when making that knot, BUT, over the years I have snapped and cracked many rebars, Heat is your friend when playing with this stuff. I am trying to use simple tools and not use heat unless I have to, and if I do use it you would always see the flame in the video there will be no sneaky stuff. I have just used the standard rebar that you would buy at most hardware stores that are used on houses the code on my 1/2 inch rebar is "D 500N" I am in Australia. If I have bent rebar at a mark I try to never rebend at that mark again in another direction, (I do this in this video, but I try not to). I can bend it further in the same direction but not sideways it may crack, if you bend it too far and need to bend it back you will see what I mean. Bend it slowly and wider bends put less stress on the rebar. It took me a while to get used to working with it COLD. I appreciate your comment. there have been many people pointing out the things I do which they say are unsafe.

Great video! I found your channel by googling metal sculpture making ... and I'm so glad to have seen what you do! You've shown how to make these nice tight curves another way with a decent vise and some leverage! I've been bending 16 mm rod the same way to make gentle smooth curves, but when I've wanted tighter curves, I've resorted to heating the steel with the oxytorch. I think I'll try your method now! Thanks!!

Another interesting one Gavin Cant wait to get into my shop in the new year and try to copy what you make look easy. I can see myself wasting a lot of rebar to get even close to what you can do. keep the videos coming.

Thank you very much Doug, I am glad you liked it and I appreciate your comment. I am sure you will pick it up in no time. If I have bent rebar at a mark I try to never rebend at that mark again in another direction, I can bend it further in the same direction but not sideways it may crack, if you bend it too far and need to bend it back you will see what I mean. Bend it slowly and wider bends put less stress on the rebar. It took me a while to get used to working with it COLD, just have a play without trying to make anything and you will soon know how it works and what makes it crack or break, and the limits you have to work around to make something with it, if you are still having trouble heat is your friend. Hey brother this is my first comment on KZfaq ever I’m in the Jersey pines and just started cold forging 3 months ago I’m working with 20 year old rebar that was used for holding down clam beds in egg harbor bay really cool when wire brushed clean you my friend have created a monster I now say let’s see how Gavin would bend it thanks buddy I appreciate you’re free coaching
