This is so therapeutic. As a kid who listened to Asa when everyone else around me preferred something else and Nigeria music wasn’t this diverse, she was that one string of sanity who made me feel it’s okay to be different. It was back in 2009 and a friend of mine had just returned from Nigeria, and he brought the “Jailer” album. He was playing the entire album and I listened to the first song I heard then (Fire on the Mountain) and for some reason, the very first 16 words that starts the song was enough to get my attention. I listened to the song and I broke down. The reasons I broke down were so many because I was putting the song into perspective. I had my own interpretation of everything she’s saying in the son. Now, let’s take it back a little. I was borne and raised by a single mother, but most importantly, my grandmother. I was still in high school and didn’t have anyone to help me with my tuition, so like most kids in Africa (Liberia) I had to sell in the streets risking and missing out on a lot of things as it relates to my childhood. My father had passed when I was about nine years old, my mother didn’t go to college, my grandmother didn’t have any formal education. I knew no family member overseas to ask for help and life wasn’t as promising as I could say it is right now. So my interpretation of “Fire On The Mountain“ was customary to my realities at the time, which was to say, another young kid’s future is about to be cut off and no one is even seeing it. Not to forget, my country (Liberia) had just ended about 14 to 16 years of civil war and the entire youthful population future was (if not still) unclear as to what tomorrow would bring. So me hearing this song, I tell you no lie, God is my witness, I cried like a baby. I was like, how can someone way at far sing to my soul and realities? But later did I know, that’s the truth purpose of arts or creativity in music. From that day on, the entire “Jailer” album has been my go to album when I need to listen to good songs. I would listen to Subway, Bibanke, Eye Adaba, 360 degrees, So Beautiful, Awe and the rest. Thanks for inspiring generations. You’re blessed. I also get it when you said you’re not religious, that’s my view on life as well. I hope to meet with you some day. I may not have the words to say if we do meet, but just meeting with someone like you means a lot. There are a lot of great inspirational people like you out there and it’s my prayer that I get to chance to meet you guys if fate permits.

"Parents can discipline but don't know what their kids are doing." So relatable to the current crisis on ground. I had a conversation yesterday and the person kept saying I would never have thought you do this if you didn't mention it. Of course. It's really not about how strict or thorough parenting is. It's God's grace simply.

Yes it is possible especially if the discipline here is just all about being so strict and godly that your children can not get close to you. Little children and teenagers need more than just discipline, they need someone that can come to their level and vibe with them sometimes and make them feel comfortable to talk.
@therealist2866
@therealist2866 2 жыл бұрын
Parenting is less about “discipline” and more about VALUES. Bequeath kids with great values (not “church” values) and you can rest easier. Meanwhile, most Nigerians do not even fully grasp the real concept of discipline, which is more internal than external.
@udohpele1696
@udohpele1696 2 жыл бұрын
Yep... It's God's grace. But you have a role to play in it too as a parent. What parents don't do right is when they are only bent on discipline. It makes the child to shy away from that parent whenever the child has concerns he/she doesn't understand. Talking sense into the child goes a very long way. May times longer than mere discipline. When your child knows he/she can talk to you, it makes them everly ready to listen to you. That's what wikl grow them in the "right path" the path set by you the parent.

I love what Asa does and I want her to keep on doing it. I was 6 when her first album came out but it change or rather shaped the way I think. I would like to thank her for that

Korty is so structured and intentional with her questions and on the other hand, I found Asa's answers quite interesting and I love the way she speaks like she's singing!. Procrastination and overthinking is something I'm also trying to overcome. It's how you wanted to make a video with her and you eventually did ❣👏
