I met Bing Crosby's Grandson and He Sings Like THIS

While asking random people to sing in California, I met Phil Crosby Jr. When he first noticed what I was going, there were already a few people in line waiting to sing. Meanwhile, he looked through my song list and saw that I could play some of Sinatra's music. This made Phil quite happy because Phil is a huge fan of Frank Sinatra. But his relationship with Frank Sinatra goes much deeper than casual fanhood. Phil Crosby Jr's grandfather was the legendary Bing Crosby, a man who actually is said to have inspired Frank Sinatra to be a singer.
This video happened at a large yearly musician's trade show called NAMM.

As a musician, I'm all about creating musical experiences that have people feeling happy and free, and that's why the "Sing With Me for Free" series exists. Since 2018, I have asked thousands of random people to sing with me on camera. A lot of people have said no, some have said no initially but changed their minds to yes, and some have said yes right away. I ask these people to sing with one purpose: to create a way for them to experience a sense of happiness and freedom they did not feel before. And much of the time, this actually works (and that makes ME happy).

Actually, "my way" wasn't written by Franck Sinatra. It's a French song named "comme d'habitude" performed and written (+Gilles Thibaut) by Claude François, music by Jacques Revaux. Paul Anka made it famous in your country then Franck Sinatra sung it. Just for you to know it, love your channel full of good vibes 👍

@@ednaatluxton4918 I think he only re-wrote the lyrics. From what I can see on wikipedia, the French song was written in 1967, and the lyrics were then re-written by Paul Anka in 1968. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comme_d%27habitude

Interesting that Canadian (Paul Anka) made it famous in the U.S. It almost reminds me of America's Got Talent, the judges: British, German, Columbian and a Canadian. Not one American judge.

@@59lizzzhad heard the same thing; it came from a memoir written by Gary Crosby, one of his older sons. But the other kids denied it, and later Gary said it really wasn’t true and that the publishers and ghost writer had pressed him to juice things up to sell more books and he went along with it. Bing’s first wife, mother to Gary and I believe 3 of his brothers, was a raging alcoholic, very heavy drinker. It tore Bing apart, and he struggled to keep working while worrying and dealing with her and what it was doing to the children. Professional help was unsuccessful for her. If you look at pictures of those kids they have the look of fetal alcohol syndrome. Might help explain Gary’s poor judgement with the book. Those boys died relatively early: suicide, alcoholism, drugs, lots of problems. Very sad. Bing’s first wife died early from ovarian cancer no doubt complicated by the alcoholism. His second marriage went much better, and the wife and children from that marriage appear to have been a much happier lot. In the end, do I believe the guy was perfect? Nobody is. But was he the bastard Gary accused him of being? Not according to the rest of the family, nor others who knew him and his family well. I don’t believe it anymore, either. There are some good KZfaq videos documenting Bing’s life, very interesting. Also, the Wikipedia page for Phil Crosby (Phil Jr’s dad) gives some clarity.

He seemed to just "naturally" belt it out like his grandfatherS did before, yes ? I knew Bing's son, Bobby Jr., quite well-so I'll share my thoughts with you, that I shared with PHIL: Phil could "carry the torch" couldn't he?! So tired of the sensational setting fires to the stages and females removing their clothes just to SCREAM into a microphone---He could start a new TREND---call it " Singing From the Heart Again!?" I've got a song just waiting to be sung, he could do really well! Pray that he likes it! Thanks! "I Miss You More" Good One, Phil! Good to see you "Out There, and Giving it a Try!" HA! Good to "HEAR" you too! But you got me a big confused-We never HEARD about you! My Aunt Catherine went to film " Blue Hawaii" with Elvis, caring for the three boys, and all we HEARD about when we met with Bobby Jr., Ruby (when they lived in that little house on Colby-Remember? and "Little Tina Marie") was " Steven, in college in Washington State, Chris (the singer on Facebook-Sculptor, too) and Bobby Junior! So, which one is YOUR father ? When Bobby came to see me in Reseda, years ago, he showed me some of his original songs, and they were pretty good-He was just taking on the new "tech" job he called it , with Kelsey Grammer! Are you in contact with RUBY these days? She was quite an "original" in her own right-uniquely different-my Aunt used to say. Bobby told me that Chris was singing in Vegas(back then) and that he thought he should have accepted "advice" from his uncle and worked in recording instead of live performances, or he'd be "getting Vegas Throat real soon!" That's a quote from Bobby, Phil! I really liked Bobby, but he was getting engaged to Ruby at the time and so I avoided flirting with him! Do you have photos of Bobby you could send to ME? The only ones I have are the washed out ones from our trip to Disneyland, Anaheim. "Bobby" reminded me so much OF Elvis-looked like him, didn't he? Knowing you have the VOICE for it, would you listen to a song I think would be great for your new album, I call it, "I Miss You More" and it's on you tube with a picture of FRANK with a cigarette blowing in the wind! Love to talk to you sometime, but looks as though you're going to be very busy in your future. (I sang the song before I found Ancolies (Gilles) in France, to sing it in French also. Let's give it a try, want to? I also suggest another genre/type, titled " The Girl I Almost Married" which is on you tube in English, (my rough) and Italian, by Ana Marie Ceuca with reworked lyrics as " The Man I Almost Married." Like to hear you do "I Ain't no Middlman," too, but it's quite "slang" in the lyrics and very "Rock!" BING AND BOB would BOTH be SO PROUD OF YOU! GOOD FOR YOU!. He’s not humble at all he’s quite the egomaniac I know I used to work with him. I used to play drums in his original quartet, and it was really a ordeal not fun at all.

@@nealsausen4651 I can see that potential. I didn't see "humble" here at all except for "humble brag". He seemed alright for the most part in this video, but I get a sense this is all a mask he wears in public, very "Hollywood" - it's almost impossible to tell what he's like privately. He might be just fine. But he also could easily be a bitter, abusive and abrasive person. Often times the people who put on a big "friendly" show are anything but, they just use it to get attention and special favor. Not going to speculate either way, but I have no reason to doubt your account based on what I see here.

@@NorthernKitty : if you think he’s bad here, you should try working with him! I would’ve exclamation here I played drums for him for about a year, a half in the original “Phil Crosby, Junior Quartet”, including a tour of Japan, and it was no picnic! Yeah, he has or at least he had when I knew him the Hollywood phoniness thing going on, but he wasn’t THAT bad yet! he could be abusive to his musicians verbally! His piano player walked out on him at least four or five times that I remember, and he was a very he was a very talented piano player! He was also our musical Director this piano player you don’t want to lose someone like that! Phil went through at least two piano players when I was with him And that was about a year and a half worth of wasted time and effort I don’t know what he’s like now because I haven’t talked to him in over 10 years and I have no intention of ever talking to him! My whole thing is if someone is projecting negative energy best to just stay away from them as much as possible! And as for his singing?! It was really nothing to write home about he’s NO Bing Crosby!

Bing apparently was strict but not abusive. The real problem was their mother with her raging alcoholism, very heavy drinker. Pretty messed up. Over the years there has been a lot of info about this, including some excellent documentary videos available on KZfaq, but the Wikipedia page for Phil Crosby, Phil Jr’s dad, has a good write up on it. I remember when Phil’s brother Gary-who had alienated himself from the family-published his memoir alleging Bing was abusive and beat the crap out of the kids. It was shocking, totally unexpected. Phil was incensed and spoke out about Gary’s lies and greed. At a later time, Gary publicly recanted blaming the publisher and ghost writer for pressuring him to juice things up to sell more books. My recollection was Gary had a very problematic public reputation which worsened with age. Sad his allegations about Bing are still in the ether, but stuff like that kind of takes on a life of its own once it’s out there.

I remember when I was 14 or so, I loved his old movies and knew of him well, so I was really surprised when my mom was dropping my brother off for his music lesson and here is Bing Crosby yelling at his son in the parking lot. I really felt bad for his son who wasn't much older than me at the time. To be publicly shamed like that was really mean of Bing Crosby. I never cared for his movies after that.

@@kenz2756 your gene pool is also a part of how you're shaped, cause it's what gives you, your beginning shape. So everything and everyone is affected by their gene pool in the sense that, that's where they come from, it's in their genetics. It's dosnt, however, mean that you can't change your self, but if your gene pool is strong on a set of things that you want to change, you have to be aware of it and forcefully change it through out your life. (mostly seen among children of addicts, forcefully not wanting anything to do with things that makes them addicted, but still naturally weak towards the addiction.)

@@gargoyled_drake Again that doesn't make any sense to me. Genes affecting inclinations/interests is very strange. It's an external factor if anything. If it's mental disorders or disease sure, but interests? I don't know how anyone make the conclusion it's genes. I'm already living a life where i can't at all believe that's the case. I did nothing to end up with a completely different demeanor than my family members.

@@kenz2756 Well, different character traits lays partially in genetics - that’s for the “natural performer” ie mix of charisma and charm and confidence (remember partially). And your genes can result in you having a more developed temporal lope and a musculature and anatomy in your throat that makes you better at learning to sing and makes it sound better (respectively). You might not believe it, but genes are quite influential in your personality. Not completely, but partially. Edit: I can’t with my knowledge explain interests directly, btw. Only ability to learn what might interest you - I’d imagine the interests come (in a lot of cases) from early success with it or exposure to.

@@Tristanlj-555 No, I'm not questioning physical ability, like the vocal cord. it's the inclination and personality that is just a stretch. Even with a certain temporal lobe (as you say) you're still subject to way too much differences. Morality for one is something that affects your personality a lot, yet it differs so much between different people even in the same family line. Even if genes have an effect on that it's insignificant and indirect.

I know Phil will be too busy to get back to little old unknown songwriter me, but thought YOU might enjoy this: He's apparently inherited both the "talk-sing flare" as well as the love song "heart," yes ? VERSATILE He seemed to just "naturally" belt it out like his grandfather did before, yes ? If he becomes extremely comfortable ON STAGE as his grandfather and his buddies were, he'll "fill the bill "perfectly! I also suggest another genre/type, titled " The Girl I Almost Married" which is on you tube in English, (my rough) and Italian, by Ana Marie Ceuca with reworked lyrics as " The Man I Almost Married." Like to hear you do "I Ain't no Middleman," too, but it's quite "slang" in the lyrics and very "Rock!" BING AND BOB would BOTH be SO PROUD OF YOU! GOOD FOR YOU!. Sincerely, Lynda Faye Neice of Aunt Catherine Phillips, Illinois. LyndaFayeSmusic@Yahoo/utube/Bandcamp
