To start, I think your guys' tree is BEAUTIFUL, but I'm an artist and attracted to "dark" - ish aesthetics. Also, I'm sorry for the long text, but I'm very experienced with possible and not so possible paranormal phenomena, though I'm NO expert. Just years experienced. So o want to share with you guys some helpful tips, especially if this is causing you stress and sleepless nights, etc. That's awful. Additionally, I don't want to "debunk" you, at all. But I may have suggestions for you both to keep in mind and that may help you two - perhaps. Btw, I DO believe in ghosts and the supernatural in general, so I'm not a rabid skeptic, but I'm rational. Anyway. 1. Check the piping. You cannot imagine the sounds old, even new, piping can make! Steps, like REAL human sounding steps can be mimicked by lose or old pipes! They can even sound to "fade away" as if the "person" was walking away, or the reverse! But it's just air and/or water moving the damn pipes! Pipes can also make weird sound like "mornings", "whispering" which is particularly uncanny in the middle of the night! Etc. All this alone may solve most of your "strange sounds"! I've been in many houses where people swore they were haunted, because they heard "footsteps" and heard "groans" at night! I checked their piping, yep, all loose or old pipes! So check your plumbing. 2. Scratching on the outside of the house can actually be just animals trying to find insects in the wood or digging around or just checking things out. And most animals are very nocturnal! So you'll hear this more at night! Of course! "Women screams" can be foxes, dear or owls. "Laughter" sounds can be coyotes, etc. Look up what wild animals you have in your area and what types of sound they may make. Also WHEN and HOW, because some animals may make VERY DIFFERENT sounds depending on what they're doing: mating calls, communication calls, dying noises, defensive noises, and all from just ONE animal! So be mindful that even if you live in the middle of a city, you'll STILL find wild animals doing their thing! 3. Knocking on your door and nobody's there! Or by your window! Check no 1. It can be pipes! Don't underestimate the sounds that these damn things can make and scare the LIVING HELL out of you when alone OR with a spouse. 4. Cats are also very very nocturnal, as you may know, and that's when they hunt, mate more often, fight, and mark territories, etc. And many of those behaviors can get them making VERY weird sounds! Some you may not have heard before if the cats are especially feral. And their threat "meaows can end on a DIME, just stop, then silence, it very characteristic of them. 5. Seeing shadows can be just about anything. "Eye floaters", anxiety, or even simply seeing a shadow cast by someone passing by your window, just normal people, or yourself "breaking" the light somewhere. The time when you KNOW 100% it's a shadow person or entity is when you see the thing HEAD - ON. That's when there's just NO mistaking it. But be sure you were fully awake and not in twilight sleep or having sleep paralysis. 6. The 3:33am thing. Seriously, it means nothing. Most of stuff like this comes from the Internet and folks LOOOOOVE to scare other forms for "like", laughs, whatever. These ideas about numbers are important when you're working with a professional numerologist, or are doing something specific, and I mean occult, to make this number "important" in any truly meaningful way, or something like these things. Also, 80 to 90% of humans wake up at that time. It has to do withhold "inner clock", or circadian rhythms. Folks usually wake up between 3 and 4am to pee or or naturally from a dream, roll over, and go right back to sleep. I can't tell you how many times in my life I've woken up at 3 am to pee, and many times at EXACTLY 3:33am, and nothing happens, except that I relieve myself. LoL So tell your boyfriend not to panic. Seriously. 7. The sulfur smell can be many things too. Stagnant water nearby; where even the gentlest of breezes carry a stinky pond or other natural and not so natural pool of water. Stagnant water can even be in your house! Especially underground! Animals outside can also emit this smell, etc. When it's something more spiritual and "evil" feeling, TRUST ME, you'll KNOW. Sulfur smell and a few odd things that may be explainable is nothing to worry about. Sulfur is troublesome if you're seeing literal apparitions, shit flies around by themselves, or you see hideous entities by your bedside, or something THAT obvious. So please keep that in mind. 8. Electrical stuff going on or off, radios changing channels, if they're digital especially, ceiling or floor fans going off or "moving on their own" can all be many things from electrical surges, getting signals from neighbors even as far away as a mile, etc. I can go on, but I hope I made things clear. Also PLEASE REMEMBER THIS: a lot of these EXPLAINABLE things CAN and DO happen ALL AT THE SAME TIME, or close to it, giving the impression that "it cannot be a coincidence!", but it actually CAN be. Just like many ACTUAL paranormal things can and do happen simultaneously, or close to it. But the important thing is NOT TO PANIC and go immediately to "GHOSTS!!" or "DEMONS". It takes time and it's more boring than "having a ghost at home" (for some, at least) to inspect ALL the things I suggested to troubleshoot if there are many things you can explain, like all the examples I gave you. Once you guys have EXHAUSTED every RATIONAL possibility, and you're STILL feeling presences and seeing and hearing or experiencing things you CANNOT explain, THEN you MAY have something. (And remember that "rational" doesn't mean the paranormal doesn't exist, it just means, in this case, that you not panic and be smart about things, and not to scare yourselves and each other NEEDLESSLY.) Again, sorry for the long text, but I've seen this scenario many many times before, and for most people experiencing them, happily it just turned out to be animals or pipes or some other mundane thing. 99 times out of 100 it's just misinterpreted events. The 1 time left can be something paranormal but resolvable, to fairly serious or anxiety inducing to VERY serious. THAT'S when you call professionals or religious leaders, etc. Otherwise, it may all be normal "living things". Good luck! Btw, those phone apps are fun but not very "real". And please do not attempt to "contact" anyone dead. Not a family member or anyone. The thing is if your relatives can "hear" hoo, other THINGS can hear you just as clearly, if not MORE! Unless you know exactly what you're doing AND are very experienced, do NOT CONTACT ANYTHING OR ANGONE (family or not) WHO HAVE DIED, EVER. Look, chances can be that nothing happens, but the risk of attracting something VERY fucking NEGATIVE which are NOTORIOUSLY HARD TO GET RID OF, ARE TOO HIGH! And you'll go from having a kool time playing ghost hunters one day and the next your entire life falls appart and you end up alone with a THING that whispers you "sweet nothings" into your ears at night, only to find a THING beside you. Not a good time, believe me. That's my advice.
