I wrote I Must Tell Jesus in June of 1970. I had been kidnapped and taken to the Mekong Castle at the headwaters of the Mekong River. I saw most of the worst atrocities of the Vietnam War. I managed to escape across the river and got to an International Red Cross refugee camp in Laos. The admistrator of the camp arranged to have me flown to the American embassy in that country and from there I was able to return to the United States. My native tongue is Flemish and I was processing my trauma in that language. My mother speaks Flemish but she didn't want to listen to me or to help me. So I was left all alone trying to work through my PTSD issues. After I wrote this song my parents took me to Kansas City and I ended up in foster care with the Castanza family. I soon discovered that Mrs Castanza's mother was from Belgium! So she and her youngest son spoke Flemish! They helped work through my trauma from Vietnam! Praise the Lord! He NEVER abandons us!

I wrote I Must Tell Jesus in 1970. I was dealing with PTSD. I was kidnapped and taken to Vietnam where I saw all the worst fighting along the Mekong. When I returned home my family moved from Illinois to Michigan. My mother was drinking heavily and my father was responding back in violence. The night I wrote I Must Tell Jesus it was written during the night when my parents were fighting. At dawn my father decided to go to Kansas City and that evening I was placed in foster care there with the Castanza family. Mrs Castanza and her youngest son spoke Flemish and they were able to help me process my trauma in my native tongue.
