Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

Leaking oil means replace your gasket. If that gasket blows you will need towed. Three times a charm with the water leak. Emi, you have a positive attitude, independent and patience with your van troubles.

I would get a small battery-operated water sensor. It will beep if it gets wet. This way, you'll know right away.

Sikaflex is the absolute best stuff to use on anything on the outside of your van...stays flexible and never lets go. I used it to put in my windows, fantastic fan and to seal where the wires from my solar panels come thru the roof and that was 6 years ago and no problems.

Please be aware of your head gasket.....I blew my engine. I didn’t know it possible to leak all the oil in two days during mild weather 😢

Get it fixed ASAP, because it eill be a bigger more expensive job if it blows your head gasket, I have a leaking coolant, getting it sorted tomorrow and next week hopefully. Don't wait too long.

Do the soap and water test regularly once on the road to pick up any problems with leaks. Don't play around with head gasket Emi. ❤❤❤

Regardless of where you live, there is always ‘that’ list as well as unexpected repairs and costs. One thing at a time is all you can do. I’m glad this problem was quick & simple at the moment.

The top itself could be loose, cracking or breaking the seal, allowing water to reenter over time!

Clean the area between the high-top flange and the van with scotch bright. Let it dry and paint it with a rubberized roof pain.

I'm glad he was able to fix it! I've seen enough repairs to know Sikaflex is a great brand for ceiling fans and lots of other seals. Butyl tape and Sikaflex are a must for repairs in installations to prevent leaks. And if you could crop the video and make it a how-to, that would be great!

Hi do not hesitate to have the headgasket done. It could lose all oil rapidly. Fords are notorious of deteriorating headgaskets.

Sika flex has been my go-to on my 30 yr old van since the build out 5 yrs ago. Has never failed! So likely you're fine.

Sikaflex works well, that's what we used for sealing windows on the ferries, during refits. Last year, however, when I was in Walmart looking for stuff for my build, I came across flex-seal. I'm really impressed, because it doesn't seem to dry out, it appears to keep it's 'rubbery" state.

RV places sell a specialized sealant product in a tube for all joints. Never failed on my truck camper aluminum roof.

My heart goes out to you for having two issues at once to deal with concerning your home on wheels. It would be like me having car and house problems at the same time. I'm a single female and I always think how much better it would be if there was a partner to share half the load when I'm having major problems...lol. But otherwise, I actually value being a loner. Always have. Me and my 3 cats. Prayers that your problems will be fixed so you & Kelly can travel safely with no worries.

I see so many van life videos these days where whenever they have a van issue or a negative van life experience, they moan and wail and get really negative about how horrible van life is! Thank God for people like you & Chrome & jeffie Bear, who tell it like it is, and demonstrate the proper and more mature approach to van life! Of course there will be problems! There are problems that will arise in ANY chosen lifestyle! But you guys demonstrate how a calm and rational approach can usually solve them, without any of the immature and neurotic behaviour that really does seem to be taking over so many other van life channels! . . . and THIS is why I give up on so many other channels and keep coming back to you guys! Here's hoping it's a quick and easy fix so that we can continue to get out and adventure along with you!!!

Careful Emi... if you added the litre of the Lucas additive to a full crankcase of oil. Increases pressure on the gasket.

I just bought two leak detectors from Amazon. They’re small, but they will alarm. I wonder if you put one In the back corner if it would help Alert you if water came in. You wouldn’t have to keep taking all your stuff out of that cubbyhole so often.

Silicon is not ideal for UV conditions. There is a sealant product in tubes from an RV store that is special for the exterior use. A “lap sealant” All I have ever used on my truck camper roof.👍👍

adding the additive after the oil change is going to cause an over fill in your engine and can cause major problems!

So good you have friends like Lauren. I pay $260 dollars for my mechanic to just come out, because he’s portable local. Then I pay another $180 dollars an hour until it’s fixed. But he doesn’t cheat me. He diagnoses really quick, and fix before the hour usually.

I highly recommend being a part of the head gasket re&re. You'll gain very valuable knowledge that will come in handy in the future, for yourself and/or others. If you can do the repair now, don't put it off, because you can cost yourself much more by continuing to run your engine. It isn't that big a learning curve, just more of a hassle on a van because of access.
