There is a reason why the Inuit - among other groups - have adapted to not be able to go into ketosis. It can be hazardous, especially long-term.. Furthermore, most people don't have the time, money, and access to quality assistance to do this right. Lauren's experiences are merely a single data point and not proof of anything. The placebo effect is real and needs to be accounted for. The keto space, among others, is filled with dangerous scam artists and as we have learned, people are really susceptible to misinformation so they need access to real professionals. That said, I enjoy her videos and cheer her on, and hope it is at least helpful over the short term. Hopefully, she can take no more than low dosages of psych meds in the worst case. Psych meds have done severe damage to me so I am definitely cheering her on.

You are doing wonderful. To be so vulnerable and to share your experience on here... I can't even imagine the people that you're helping and have helped and have helped. My brother has schizophrenia is why I unsubscribed. I haven't seen you in a while but you popped up and it's good to see that you're doing so well even if you're having a little bit of setback from changing your medication up. My brother is 57 and to this day refuses to take medication because he won't admit that he has schizophrenia. When he was younger I almost got him to get help several times but he never followed through. Now that he's gotten older luckily he's found a place where he's not homeless and is being helpful and has been housed for a few years. The prayers then straight up heartbreak for my brother over the years it's been hard on me I can't even imagine how it's been on him. I'm really proud of you and of him for choosing to stick it out and be helpful to others. I've struggled with major depression throughout my life off and on. I can only imagine how difficult it must be maintaining and sharing everything:)

I can well understand anyone avoiding the medications. They have awful long term and short term side effects, and antipsychotics can mean being in derealization constantly while on them. Which is like non existence. Would your brother be more open to being on a special diet to improve his mental health? That doesn't require a stigmatising label or such severe side effects or being trapped due to withdrawal effects and an expectation that you'll stay on for life.

I agree it’s not good to see yourself as “healed,” but not merely because it might make you complacent in continuing the treatment regimen that seems to be helping you. Your brain is structured the way it’s structured. If the ketogenic diet is helping your brain to function in a way that is substantially less distressing, disruptive or harmful to you, then you’re not “healed,” “recovered,” “cured,” etc. You’ve simply implemented a support that has substantially improved your quality of life. Additionally, I would refer to it as just that (a support), rather than an “intervention,” because you are the one who achieved this goal. You are the one managing your diet and monitoring your levels. Your medical team is there to assist and support you, of course, but no one rode in a white horse to “intervene” and save you from yourself. You’re the one who’s in the driver’s seat and has put in the work. You should be extremely proud of that.

@reinerschafer1708 Ай бұрын
I don't think we know how far the healing can go yet. If this is truly a disease of mitochondira dysfunction, as Dr. Chris Palmer is suggesting, who is to say that correcting that mitochondria dysfunction may not eventually lead to a completely "normal" brain function? We can have cautious hope.

Oh gosh, i so relate to that feeling when you have a period of no symptoms and how quickly you can think you are 'healed'.. i have a different medical; condition but know exactly that thing. It is amazing how it happens even after a decade (for me) of being ill, how quickly one can forget, when feeling in a place of being well resourced, that there was ever anything challenging to deal with, and therefore get complacent about the practices that are helping you to feel the way you are feeling. Remember to only reduce the dosis 10 percent of current dosis. Then pause 4-6 weeks. Then down 10 percent of the new dosis. Wait 4-6 weeks and continue this way. If you notice strong withdrawal symptoms, reduce the dosis even slowlier (3-5 percent). It is the very last dosis which is very important to slowly reduce. The reason is simple: an increase from 0 to 20 mg gives a great effect on the brain. It is a very steep curve when doses are increased, so very early, one obtains almost 100 precent effect. The same curve must be followed backwards to zero again. Most people quit the last dose too quickly and therefore, they never manage to quit.
@carolcarol3938

I believe this is what you really need to concentrate on...whilst the not tracking the ketones etc. as diligently is obviously important, I believe that you are perhaps minimizing how slowly and safely the medication needs to be reduced...especially when getting down to the lower doses. Hopefully you get back to where you were feeling more in the start of the keto journey soon! Withdrawal is stressful and these antipsychotics are so powerful while tapering - I even feel the withdrawal at times and I'm going annoyingly slowly. It is a lot to juggle (these metabolic therapies) but unless they come up with some magic pill with no side effects, I'm going the metabolic and keto route and might need to take a very low dose medicine which I'm a bit nervous of how I will find out I need to take something or not b/c I dread any psychosis. Good luck deciding your taper! Thanks for sharing - you are still so on top of it!!! Go you!!

I'm TD2 diabetic and the "bookkeeping" is really a drag sometimes, and with schedule changes and all.... takes time and energy. But when I track more closely I do better. ... you and I each have to make the decision for ourselves to stick with it for our better future. I'm so so glad things are going as well as they are for you. Less meds! Feeling better! But then, brain fog... If everything was 100% perfect I would worry about your falling off the step completely. Ups and downs are the usual way. I appreciate this nuanced conversation. I think you get so many negative comments because people are sensitive to societal med shaming (not coming from you) and group you in with it. You are very honest about what a lifestyle treatment looks like - it’s not easy. There is no “just” change your diet. For many of us with serious mental health challenges, this requires VERY rigid, VERY time intensive regimes. I take meds because I don’t want to have to be perfect all of the time. I want to occasionally go on vacation and stay up late and have a piece of cake or a beer. I’m happy for those who have moderate challenges that can be treated with a “good enough” lifestyle, OR have severe challenges AND are happy living like a monk. To each their own. The problem comes when people pretend that severe challenges can be solved with a moderately healthy lifestyle. If you have real challenges and want to do a lifestyle treatment, you have to be willing AND able to be near perfect 100% of the time.

Agree. Also relatives see one bad episode and get frightened and pressure their relative to go on meds and stay on them permanently. Rather than seeing that as a route out of crisis to stability, in order to change lifestyle, to then be in a place to reduce medication carefully, with or without strict diets such as keto. Medications can be necessary, but they are not food, even though we are omnivores. That means in a sense they're poisons. No one would choose to stay on chemotherapy for a lifetime. Same with antipsychotics.

You mean highly effective drugs like lithium or imipramine right? Because I'm not seeing people on those, I'm seeing people on rubbish that has tiny effect sizes. Lithium has an effect size of around 0.85 in acute mania. That's pretty close to full remission. Full remission isn't just some casual word to be tossed around. You yourself seem to be arguing that her illness is too severe to be treated with diet alone. Well ok, so how do you explain her getting results that mimic that of lithium. I know you'll say "oh but it's just one person", thinking no doubt that science is all about large trials with lots of people because you can have flukes right? Wrong, whether you can have "fluke" depends entirely on the illness being treated. Max Fink and Bernard Carroll, demonstrated that melancholia, a very specific disease state that can be tested for using laboratory methods, dexamethasone suppression test and sleep EEG, is highly placebo resistant, so placebo resistant that placebo just flat out does nothing in these patients. Would you like to guess the specific type of depression people with Schizoaffective disorder suffer from? Melancholia, see the work Bernard Carroll on that point. Now Carroll's teacher was a man called John Cade, the person who rediscovered lithium treatment in bipolar. After Cade came Mogens Schou who immediately recognised lithium's potential, why? Because of it gigantic effect size. Schou took one look and realised the effect size was so, so gigantic that you didn't really need to run trials, it was that effective that it just worked. What did Schou's detractors say, they said, that lithium is a salt, a natural health supplement. The most important drug ever discovered in mental health was poo poohed as a supplement. So we have a placebo resistant disease, melancholia that responds to the highly effective compound called lithium and to imipramine and to ECT. We know those treatments work for three reasons, 1) the gigantic effect size of those interventions, it's close to a "Lazarus effect", well not quite, lorazepam in catatonia is Lazarus effect, but if you read Max Fink or Mogen Schou you'll see what I mean. So what about keto, well it must work, for the exact same reason we know ECT, lithium, imipramine work and lorazepam in catatonia for that matter, because the disease is placebo resistant and because the patient "gets up" after receiving the drug. You don't need a giant randomised control trial for such a massive effect. RCTs are for situations where there is reason to suspect a fluke may be possible. There is very little possibility that Lauren, a person with severe Schizoaffective disorder, which science has demonstrated is placebo resistant, could just by some accidental fluke have psychosis and melancholia vanish and not return. It's true that it's a cyclical illness, so time will be the ultimate proof, but don't be so sure, you may just be witnessing what Cade witnessed with lithium, an effect so pronounced as to leave no doubt regarding efficacy.

For some people, medical keto absolutely is a cure. Guess you haven’t seen the paper about the woman who’d lived with schizophrenia for 50 years, couldn’t live alone, had a court appointed caretaker, on multiple meds, etc - but once she went on medical keto under dr supervision, she went into FULL remission, lived on her own, and went off all psych meds. The study followed up 10 years later and she was still on keto, and still in full remission. For some people, psych issues actually ARE metabolic issues, in their brains - and so metabolic solutions are required. It’s ok that that hasn’t been the case for you, but you aren’t everybody.

Meanwhile, psychiatrists are taking up ketosis and finding that it’s working for their patients. Doctor Christopher Palmer is seeing real progress in sixty-percent of his patients. This might explain a lot of things. My mental illness started getting drastically better to the point I had my medication lowered at about the same times I started laying off on the carbs and eating more fruits and vegetables. I atributed it to because I've been more physically active and getting more sunlight before. I have the same mental illness btw.

That in and of itself is exhausting. Having to be cognizant of every single decision and not letting your guard down. It can be difficult. But I have to remind myself, not being healthy is difficult too. Then I have to choose which difficult I want.

I love your honesty, Lauren. It would be a shame if people got the impression that all they had to do was start eating bacon, eggs, cheese and avocados and their mental illness will be cured. It takes effort. Is it worthwhile? Only people like you who are going through this and experiencing this can tell us that...and I think you are doing a good job doing just that.

I think everything you do is absolutely right - except for one aspect: the tendency for athletic extremes. Yes to this approach - but prolonged "medical keto" (so few carbs that body is forced to use ketones, for months?!) NO! . Yes aerobic exercise - but marathons?! NO!. Yes being aware of your food intake - but tracking like a bodybuilder?! NO! I received much encouragement from your channel and have also succeeded to slowly reduce my medication. But with extreme keto? NO! I did come up on my own with a healthy rule that it is probably best to eat like you do everyday just leaving out the "empty carbs" (rice/bread/potatoes etc). So I go to the wonderful Indian restaurant and simply don't eat the rice. It's interesting that I came up, too, separately, with a kind of Carbohydrate Restriction Regime. Here I am, taking a few meds occasionally on demand, "living well as a person with experience in psychosis" without any of the extreme stuff. So it would be advisable to come back to us viewers after you have finished this escapade and discuss openly the much more pressing questions: what EXACTLY leads to a schizophrenia remission RELIABLY? SCIENTIFICALLY? HOW did OTHERS, the MAJORITY, orchestrate their successful remmission/ med reduction? I tell you honestly: I am in no position to adhere to medical keto and run marathons like you do. Even in my teens I would not have been able to do it. So I have no idea why you insist on these superhuman-like approaches as a panacea. Is it to boost the channel, the personal brand? I think for Everyone who may be confused and frustrated on their schizophrenia journey it is important to know: NO! Such extrems are not a requirement. NO! You are not having psychotic episodes because you have not been training and disciplined like Arnold or Lauren (often quite the opposite instead). NO! You are not symptomatic because you are a lazy or whatever person! Which leads to a much more profound finding of all of this: YES! It can be so easy and light to recover from schizophrenia! YES, LETTING GO of panic and effort and self-accusations etc. might be part of the way to healing! YES - just leave out the rice. YES, just have one bagel, in the evening. My intuition is that consistent moderation is much more common and effective and feasible on the path of recovery than this hyper-athleticism. So please go back some day to your original message of HOPE! Yes, schizophrenia is a terrible disease if continuously escalating. But once you know how it works, and what works, and that it works, "Living Well With Schizophrenia" becomes easy and natural. That is the grand message of HOPE in our age: All the panic, the escalations, etc etc...are completely unnecessary. IF ONLY we had all been correctly informed already in the prodromal phase - none of the medical drama would have been necessary, for ANY of us... 🌻

Diet is not the only thing to consider. Exercise can affect ketone levels in your body. Here’s how: Ketone Metabolism: Ketone metabolism is a natural process that occurs when the body burns fat for energy instead of glucose. This metabolic adaptation can happen during periods of fasting, low carbohydrate intake, or intense exercise where glycogen depletion occurs. When glucose levels are low due to reduced dietary intake or physical activity, insulin response decreases leading to increased fatty acid oxidation and ketone production. Exercise Intensity: The type of fuel your body uses can vary depending on the intensity and duration of the activity you are doing. When you’re cruising along at a comfortable pace, your body will primarily use glucose (sugar) from carbohydrates as its source of fuel. However, when you push yourself harder during exercise, such as during high-intensity workouts or endurance training, your body begins to rely more on ketones. Glycogen Depletion: Moderate-to-high intensity exercise will help deplete your glycogen stores, so you achieve ketosis more quickly. Glycogen is excess glucose (sugar) your body stores in your liver and muscles. To produce a meaningful level of ketones in your bloodstream, your glycogen (stored carbohydrates) must be low enough. Increased Ketone Production: Exercise has long been known to increase ketone production, even in people without diabetes. Increases in fat mobilization and increased blood flow to the liver during exercise promotes increased fat uptake to the liver and the conversion of fat first to acetyl-CoA and then to the ketone body acetoacetate.

I am looking forward to studies comparing the ketogenic diet to a healthy diet (low sugar, no processed foods, balanced nutritional profile). All of the studies I have read so far have just compared people with mental illness before and after starting keto, but we know that most people (including if not especially people with severe mental illnesses) do not adhere to healthy diets. Even Lauren, who has always seemed incredibly physically healthy to me, has admitted to having a drink regularly prior to starting this journey. That said, this video reminded me that when they start doing those trials, they really will have to put some kind of controls around sleep and exercise, even the kinds of exercise people are doing. Those factors could really skew results because that do have such a heavy bearing on our metabolic health. It will be fascinating to see how this research develops, and hopefully they find a way to make it accessible to those who are not functioning at such a high level.

Being as regimented with the medication withdrawal is just as important as the food, etc. side of things. I believe you may be minimalizing the withdrawal effects (ongoing) that the large drop in medication will have done. Really focusing on doing the withdrawal, particularly when down to lower doses, is VITALY important. Please do as much research on this as every other aspect. There is no hurry. Cheers from Australia.

Then wham all of a sudden I find myself out of my mind. I never tried your diet so I don't know how it might of changed me. Is there a downside healthwise to stay on a keto genic diet? And then of course the cost to maintain such a diet. Either downside is better then being on meds so I wish you the best Lauren! You deserve to experience a symptom free life!
