THANK YOU! I wanted to say that so badly! He flat out said that he doesn’t even want to try to love her in a romantic way. Colin has his faults but I think the thing that caused change in them this season was confidence. They both needed to find their way separately first. Pen’s glow up was her finally standing up for herself against her mom and Colin. 👏

The fig leaf metaphor is very real. What helped my ADHD brain was clearing the depression fog and learning what I really wanted out of life. I realized I was performing ambition, but I'm truly fulfilled by having a lovely home, enjoying my leisure time without guilt, and occasionally helping direct people who are lost. Now that I'm aware of what I really want, I can do or not do the things that allow me to achieve those things. P.S. Adderall is a helluva drug. It was way too strong for me.

i can definitely relate to the feeling of wanting to try all kinds of skills activities, arts, but psyching myself out and getting too intimidated. something that's helped me is watching my aunt and uncle - a truly perfect couple in their early 70s now who are avid life-long learners and tryers of new things, my uncle especially. he decided he wanted to learn to play the flute about 10-12 years ago and has stuck with it. anytime i'm with them (he brings his flute even on vacation), he'll say "i'm gonna go toot my flute" and he practices every day for an hour. and is he like a perfect, expert flutist? no, but he's a hell of a lot better now than when he started and he loves it. all of that to say that it's scary to start new things and try a new passion, but there's no time limit. you can start when you're 60 if you want

The Bell Jar being Plath’s only true novel is even more tragic when you read Letters from Home and it starts by her mother saying Sylvia originally wrote The Bell Jar as a book about getting worse and was going to write a second novel that was all about getting better. She clearly never wrote the second one.

I think Sylvia Plath was just a women who turned to venting, because what else is there to do. I think she, just like Kafka, wanted to be heard in some way of their thoughts and emotions. Plath published her works before her end.. Kafka would have burned his works if he never wanted them to see the light of day, yet he left them to his acquaintance instead. They both wrote to themselves and wanted to explore the turmoil of *their* human condition.

I always interpreted the Bell Jar and the fig tree metaphor as the overwhelming feeling of being young. When you realize you're not a child anymore and now you have to be an adult and you have to choose but the world is full of possibilities in a way that it isn't when you're older. I read it when I was 20 and it definitely stuck. I also never took it as a great feminist work, I just took it as a young person being overwhelmed by the future and breaking under the pressure of deciding what future they want.
@saratoninpls
@saratoninpls 28 күн бұрын
I read it in school when I was 17 right when I started touring colleges and figuring out what I was gonna do after high school and I resonated with it so much. I just graduated and had to write my favorite teacher a letter for our senior banquet and wrote about my English teacher. I opened with the Fig Tree quote because of how much it impacted me as a young adult and I still think about it and what I will do next in life.
@keelinfahy

that’s not an interpretation thats its meaning…it’s literally a young girl you change choose between doing being a wife with children or being a crew champion
@isabelleroberge2857
@isabelleroberge2857 28 күн бұрын
@@keelinfahy yeah I get that can be a main interpretation. I remember when I got the book on the back it said it was a famous feminist work, but when I read it I didn't really get that. I also think it was far more complicated between her two choices. She could see all the different lives she could lead, all of them appealing in their own way. If it's boiled down even more it's just the crippling nature of too much choice

i love the fig metaphor so much because it’s so incredibly relatable, and i think it certainly can be a symptom of ADHD, i think for a lot of people it’s a symptom of former gifted and burnt out kids. it’s that belief that you can’t try something unless you’re going to be great at it, so instead you choose to do nothing because of the fear of failure. you’re told that you have so much potential and possibility, but that much potential and possibilities can be paralyzing if you don’t believe it in yourself.

I can acknowledge that the bell jar is an acclaimed novel while simultaneously disliking it. I've never felt like I was existing in such a storm cloud while reading a book in my whole life. Something about it felt so dark that I wouldn't have even finished it if it weren't for the fact that I was reading it for a class. I generally don't recommend it when people ask. But with all that being said, the fig tree metaphor has haunted me for years

Crime and Punishment is for Men tbh. Reading it as a woman gives you much different insights and perspectives than a lot of the typical scholars who’s analysis you would normally study alongside the book. It’s a lot lol. he battles with the concept of justification for his crime and a lot of those justifications come from patriarchal and toxic masculine ideas ideas of him being a “great man” who’s going to change the world much like Alexander the great. it’s interesting to analyze from the female perspective and think yes some men really feel this way about themselves and really feel like they should be able to do whatever they want because they are so. “great .”

Brittany, I couldn't have related to anything more than when you talked about the fig tree analogy. I have the exact same struggle right now - I don't allow myself the freedom to start because of fear of failure, because of the pressure to do it right, because of the fear that I'll mess up in front of everyone. I'm in the process of writing my music and trying to put myself out there, but I have so many other endeavours that it all just gets crowded and I can't focus on what it takes to just complete my works. Because I stop before I can even see the project through. But your words have truly inspired me and hopefully sometime in the not so far future, we can both achieve what we set out to
