Oshi no Ko is the most hyped up and popular shows of this season. And although the reception to the show has been generally positive, there is a loud minority of "fans" that are ruining it for everyone in every toxic way imaginable.

While do sympathize for the mother of the deceased, I also believe that they, and the show, are trying to spread awareness about mental illness, hence, if you watched throughout the whole 6th episode, they showed the suicidal hotline. The complaints of the mother really sparked a controversy online, revealing the irony of the internet. This is why I love the show, they're not just for "milking".

@@jamilgonzaga7081 while I don't agree with the mother, the people who are cyberbullying her are pieces of shit. i think the act of portraying a crime isn't disrespectful to the victim, unless the show tries to make it so. she should be glad that more people are being aware of this problem through this show, which is a good thing. i personally don't think she should watch it, because it can bring back the traumatic past, but people need to be aware of this.

I'd raise hell if my brother's suicide had been used by some random entertainment without my family's permission. It was so disrespectful and awful. They could have written the story ANY OTHER WAY to "raise awareness". The fact that the writers didn't issue an apology immediately says volumes. Let's not pretend this was only about the greater good and the wellbeing of others when those involved with the show's storyline couldn't even do the bare minimum with caring at all about the wellbeing of the VICTIMS MOTHER.

The thing is that a lot of the time, there's a contractual purity thing involved with women involved in Japanese showbiz. Fans saw how people flipped out over the idea of Ai getting pregnant. Not only was it an out of wedlock pregnancy when she was just 16ish, but idols are supposed to cultivate an image of purity and "girl next door" vibes, and pregnancy doesn't mesh with that. It's sad, but it's true.

@@H.V.C_Shino Are you kidding me? What about light hearted stories and comedies? You can't say you shouldn't consume any type of entertainment because some people LIKE watching and experiencing these things. It's just, some people may be more sensitive to some topics than others. Like when I watched made in abyss for example. I nearly had a meltdown after one of the scenes because it reminded me of having my dog put down not even a year before. I bet many people watched that scene and DIDN'T have the reaction that I did because they never had that experience before. Everyone is different! While you CANNOT warn about EVERY topic, I DO think you should warn about themes of suicide and bullying since a LOT of people go through these things.
@NGSolaria

@@saffronnie3969Yea. In many cases like you said, warnings for suicide, abuse of any type ESPECIALLY should be included. Bullying as well but mostly suicide and abuses because a lot about go through it and it may cause triggers of those memories they wish to forget. They should've indeed put a warning for the episode. For me personally as I've tried to take my life multiple times. I wasn't as stunned or affected. But others who've self harmed or tried to commit die may act differently and it can be more upsetting to them. More or less just relentlessly cyber bullies. People take it differently and we should all think about it and not ourselves. But as humans, we're all born selfish in some ways.

It may very well be based on it, but the fact of the matter is its not confirmed, so saying it as such without confirmation is simply untrue. I can somewhat understand both sides, the cyberbullies and the mother. FYI, I am not defending the CBs, I'm just stating what the thought process might have been to allow a more unbiased viewpoint. If you are gonna reply to this, read everything first. From what it looks like, it can be percieved as the mother making a big deal about something that happens in multiple animes, like if someone's relative or friend was to die from a public stabbing and then they watch Reincarnated as a Slime and then complain to the creators about the similarity, they might feel as if the person is complaining for the sake of it and get upset at that seeing it as an attack against something they love (being Reincarnated as a Sime) thus getting all defensive about it. In a situation like that, it would be better if both parties don't complain since many anime have people getting stabbed and complaining about it wouldn't help much if at all. However, this is a far more different situation. In this situation of Oshi no ko and the mother, we see that according to the mother, from the situation that Akane was in to the messages she was receiving, how it was practically one to one, how the only real difference was that Akane was saved by Aqua while her daughter wasn't. We even see the creators admit to using her daughter's story as inspiration (though we don't know much more past that). In a situation like that, the mother has every right to complain and be suspicious especially from the recency of her daughter's passing. I understand the mindset of the CBs however that in no way excuses their actions, especially given the parallels.

If it were the case that the only similarity was the suicide or the jumping off a bridge, then I'd somewhat understand why people would be upset at her complaints. Doesn't make their actions right, but it does explain things a little. In this situation though, it's basically a replica according to the information given, just different people, different entertainment professions and the fact that Akane was saved. The mother honestly does have a right to complain if it is the case that all those messages in that episode (or a large portion) was ripped from the whole occurance with her daugher. Yes there are people who get offended too easily at things, however in this situation, that is not the case and even if it was, the CBs have no right to do what they did.

This. Hana's case did make very large waves, but she is by no means the only one and she is not the most recent or the most well known. The pointed call for the inclusion of content warning is valid IMO, but I think in her grief Hana's mother forgets that she is not the only mother to have had this happen, nor is Hana's case all that notable or rare. That's a horrible truth, but it means that the situation in the show bearing resemblance to Hana's situation is likely coincidental and not biographical. I can think of no fewer than five kpop idols, a couple actresses, several reality TV stars, and a couple star athletes for whom the situation is extremely similar. I don't watch Oishi no Ko or really much anime at all, but this situation comes up in traditional western TV all the time. That's why you'll see the "People and events in this media are purely fictional and are not intended to bear any resemblance to real life people or events" warnings at the beginning of many shows or even books. Even the 'words' she talks about are very common words and on the internet, people take what they hear and repeat it in such a way that those aren't indication enough that it has been lifted from Hana's story. I don't think there's ever a reason to direct the kind of vitriol and hatred some fans have directed at Hana's mother, period. However, I do think that the makers of the show could easily not have done anything wrong in this situation and that her feelings are just that- her feelings, and not the kind of mean spirited conspiracy to "use Hana's legacy for profit" she somewhat insinuated it was. It's a serious episode about a serious topic that was (as I understand it) handled really well and respectfully. Hana's mother's emotional response is understandable... but it shouldn't bear any impact on the show or the fandom at large, except maybe the valid criticism that a content warning be added to future broadcasts.

These two things can be true at the same time without attacking anyone. The whole situation is sadly ironic and shows how little some viewers took away from the message of the episode. One distinction the article should have made is that Akane didn't contemplate suicide, she attempted suicide. I am very okay with Oshi no Ko using that incident in order to help us realise the truth of the internet, what it can cause to people's lives. But I can't imagine people who'll watch the episode and still do the exact thing the episode is teaching us not to do. If I understood correctly "the relatives of the woman who suicided expressed their discomfort online" this means they wanted to be warned before hand. They are not exactly looking to punish the manga's author or the director of the series. (Btw, they can ask for that to some extent, IMO.) But, we still have people who'll watch the show without a brain, therefore harasses these said individuals. I am very happy to hear that Ai's and Akane's existences were taken from real life incidents/events. Like "The Stabbing of Mayu Tomita" or "The Suicide of Okada Yukiko".

Since Akasaka-sensei hasn't released a statement on if it was 1 for 1 inspired by the Hana Kimura situation, but even if it was, I think its important to note that it took the subject EXTREMELY seriously. Stories like these are dark and are tragic, but I think its important to show them in order to help avoid similar tragedies in the future. I don't blame the mother at all for feeling the way she does on this. But I think it's needed to tell stories like hers so that other mothers and their children cam avoid that situation happening to them. The mother's complaint may mostly stem from the issue of people keep pointing out to her "this particular show depicting what exactly happwned to your permission" With a lot of people claiming a particular story directly using a traumatic experience from one's life "without even asking permission from you or the authors not even directly talking to you about it. Adding the fact that of course the topic is taking something that the mother is probably overly sensitive about, it's not really hard to think that one can can view that as people capitalizing on a personal experience that is the source of the mother's grief.

A lot of people sadly fall into cyber bullying when they think their argument is "just factual" without ever taking into consideration that just because you can say something, doesn't mean you should. Even if you think what you are saying has grounds for being true (that suicides like this one will continue to happen so it begs the question at what point do you stop creating a story because it bothers/hurts a group of people. Kinda like how true crime is being criticized by families of the victims. Stories like the titanic only worked because it was such an old tragedy.) At the end of the day empathy is needed to know when and where to give your opinions. Giving it to a grieving mother is most definitely not the place.

As a mother I can absolutely understand why she didn't like it. It's one thing to tell a similar story it's another to be so precise to a person who went through that and whose family is still grieving. My only problem I don't think what Akane went through wouldn't have been as powerful without seeing those hurtful words. As much as I am on the mother's side I also understand in order to tell a story that hurts you have to go to a place that hurts. Unfortunately those texts you see when Akane is scrolling threw comments are the exact same comments other's have gotten. What I'm saying is the internet may be vast, but their levels of hating on people remain the same. What her daughter experienced I guarantee someone else has been through. The mother has every right to speak out against it. But, the internet being full of no thought losers don't see it as a mother speaking her peace, but as some person going against their anime. Which is fucking disgusting. You can respect someones opinion and wishes you don't have to be a complete asshat about it.

Considering the fact that many similar situations to her have occurred in the past, it's just unfortunate timing that the specific chapter released around the same time as the incident. Even so, it is definitely not the mother's fault for feeling this way, it's just an unfortunate situation all around. The way this mother is being treated is completely unfair, I remember when Hana Kimura passed 3 years ago it was a big deal for a lot of us as it was an example of just how fucked up the Internet can really be sometimes, and I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I wish somebody could’ve been there for her. I believe that it is up to us as a community to do better not just the anime community but every fandom out there to check abhorrent behavior like this as soon as it arises and to reassure those in the spotlight they aren’t alone. Far too often we forget that the people that give us the media we love are in fact, real people. Oshi no ko's portrayal is rightfully tragic to the mother but everyone except her only has the basic right to criticize the show's decisions. None of the harassers are owed anything and they should be ashamed of their actions. The best we can do is stop comparing a fictional character to a real life tragedy and actually learn the lesson that episode was trying to teach. I am pretty sure there are some people who are uncomfortable about this topic too. But that's a story, nothing less. And we should learn from it, not hide it. While I don't believe Akane's incident was based on Hana kimura specifically, because actors committing suicide because of hate on reality show is actually pretty common. It's not right at all to harass Hana's family members because they actually lived through that stuff, her mother feels uncomfortable due to the topic which is justifiable, and I feel like it's really insensitive to harass her because of this

I do believe that Hana Kimura inspired a substantial part of Akane’s story. While I do think that the writer was regardless aiming to make an episode about a showbiz character attempting suicide, the writing for this chapter started right when Hana Kimura’s story was getting the most attention in the news. There’s so many very close similarities like the fact that the reality show incident that Hana received so much hate for was her slapping another cast member and Akane received all the hate for the exact same thing. Plus, the fact that the comments they showed in the chapter/episode were exact copies of comments that Hana’s relatives and friends stated that she got in news articles and interviews.

There's a movie I watched last year that touches on similar themes called Kami wa Mikaeri wo Motomeru. It was a pretty visceral experience, but I also understood that the movie was trying to portray and make people aware of the dark side of the entertainment industry, and the real world effects unrealistic expectations and cyber bullying has on real lives. I felt that Aka Akasaka had the same intentions for Oshi no Ko. I hope that Hana's mother finds the peace she deserves, and the horrible people ridiculing her learn to understand that they're doing the exact opposite of what the media is intending.

It's actions like this is how the show's gets cancelled, not the mom voicing out a concern, it's the toxic "fans". If you're a fan of something, I don't think you'd want it to get a bad rep... just saying 🤦🏻‍♀

This a weird sort of issue. The mother is mad that the show has similarities to her daughters death. The fans are mad that the mother wants to prevent the message that that scene was about, but in doing so they are ignoring the message as well. It’s like one weird loop thing.

I don't think she was trying to stop the message, just that it hit too close to home and it wasn't that long ago she passed. Maybe if they spoke to the mum beforehand and given her a heads up.

Hana Kimura comitted suicide on May 23, 2020, cause of death was determined as Hydrogen Sulfide inhalation (not jumping from a bridge) Oshi No Ko chapter 25 (Outrage) was release in the weekly young jump on November 19, 2020 The investigation concluded that it was a suicide in December 2020 Basically although the general public could have assume at the time that it was a suicide, the investigation was still ongoing when the chapter in question of Oshi No Ko was being written. Although it is a very sad experience and no parent should see their kid die before them, my personal opinion is that the author did not copy paste Hana`s suicide into the story. There is way too many difference and the author was depicting how internet can become the cause of suicide very quickly. There is a lot of suicide in Japan every year (approx 21000 suicide in 2020), it is a very very sensitive topic there. Since it was in the news, yes he could have been inspired by the incident, but she was not the first and only reality show star to commit suicide after bullying. But the goal of the story is to attack those exact behavior so yes there will always going to be similitude with real suicide.

Thing is, the official investigations usually take a while before they get to conclude something. I imagine COUNTLESS of news articles already wrote headlines about her suicide inbetween may and november, and countless people already assumed it was suicide.

I remember hearing about kpop idols/actors have a problem with cyberbullying and suicide. It's very sad but I'm glad an anime finally touched on these topics. It is a bit of a stretch for the family's of these entertainers coming out after the anime because the character is very relatable to lot of these terrible suicides. It happens and I hope people become more aware of how you should treat people online or IRL.

I really hate toxic fandoms, or the toxic section of fandoms. It is *awful*. I feel so bad for Horikoshi (MHA Author) for the crap he deals with. I also hate how certain toxic sides of fandoms overshadow the good sides.

The thing about Oshi no Ko and Terrace House. It wasn’t even the Akasaka who said that it was based on it. It was the scanlation group that said the plot was similar to what happened on the real life show and it was like a parallel.

As someone who watched Etika go through what was presented in episode 6, and seeing Ms. Kimura’s response. I fully sympathize because Etika passed about 4 years ago, and even now, due to all the years I watched his streams, it still hurts going back and watching react to trailers for games that released after he passed. There’s this heavy feeling of despair of thinking he was there to see what was next and realizing that he’s not here, and also realizing how long it’s been since he passed. It hits you when you remember so many good memories, but get a hard cut from that to grieving that person’s loss.

I absolutely respect the mothers feelings to be upset here I fall into the camp that can forgive the usage of her daughters memory in a constructive way. I don't think Aka intended to use that memory for cheap shock value. He is attempting to shed a light on a real thing in an honest fashion. Suicide is a serious problem Epidemic almost in some parts of the world. Using art to depict and bring awareness is a necessary and necessarily uncomfortable step to point this problem out to society.

TAKE MY ANIME OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY!!! Kidding aside, i do feel for the mother. Seeing Akane on screen might have made her the traumatic experience of losing her child. It might have triggered her regret for not seeing the cues that leads to her daughter's death. On the other hand there are those people who's coping mechanism are these animes. These people needed the media that if you threathen to take it away they are sure to lash out. Sure i will be sad if the series gets cancelled. My mind will start to wonder on why it happened. The idea someone with a hidden agenda is behind this will form. A rival company? An opportunist who wants money? Someone who just seeks attention? Or maybe the industry who got offended themselves. I just hope it does not lead to another Akane breaking point situation because unlike the show Aqua may not be there.

Good on you Joey for covering this. I haven't watched anime at all in the past year or so (keep forgetting to catch up), but it's of great importantance to have these stories covered. Anyone who is partaking in this atrosity of cyber bulling, anyone for that matter, let alone the poor mother, should really take inventory of themselves and take the time to read what they are saying to others, before and after the fact, of getting involved in any capacity of a controversy like this. It's horrible that people are just so selfish that they probably don't even realize just how hurtful and cruel they are being and are just trying to jump on the bandwagon, "for the lols", as most would say. There's an appropriate time and place for everything, but seriously, whether it's related to this incident, or something completely different, before sending out messages, please, just take a second to think about how it would make YOU feel if the message that your about to send to someone you probably don't even know the first thing about IRL was being sent to YOU instead. I'm not trying to act all high and mighty here, we all make mistakes, but together, we can just take a few moments out of our day to day life to really consider if sending a message to someone else, especially when you have no involvement nor any context to what's happening, is really such a good idea. Put yourself in the other person's shoes, as I said earlier. You may be upset at the time, so before sending anything negative to anybody, just wait before hitting send, and come back to it later. If you still feel that it's appropriate, or perhaps something that you feel that you need to speak up about (hopefully only in the context that pertains to your actual real life, and NOT some stranger that you don't know), then go ahead and send it then. It's easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment, but just take some time to relax, then rethink if it's truly necessary to send that message. This applies to anything and everyone, the world would be a much better place if we could find it in ourselves to just be a little bit more kind to others, and try to be considerate to their feelings. Sorry for the wall of text, but basically, TL:DR: - Don't grief people you don't know - Try to consider how a message would make you feel before just spontaneously sending it - If you're upset over whatever's on your mind, walk away from the situation for a bit before sending a mean or rude message. A lot of times we get caught up in the heat of the moment, but sometimes it's better just to be the bigger person by not saying anything disrespectful, hateful, mean, ect. If you don't have something nice to say, just don't say anything. It shows that you're the more mature person, if nothing else. My heart goes out to all of the people involved in not only this (especially the mother), but to anyone struggling with similar issues. Don't be afraid to ask for help, guys, seriously. Some might tell you it's a weakness to need other people to help you, but I can tell you personally, that's just simply not true. We ALL need other people in our lives sometimes, humans are social creatures, after all. Honestly, the stronger person will be the ones that are able to ask for help, because it's really hard sometimes. We all have times like that though, so as I've said, don't allow yourself to suffer and know that there are plenty of loving people out there that only want to help you, just as much as unfortunately there are cretins and creeps that will try to do the opposite. Never give up hope, and I hope this message reaches someone who just needed that little push in the right direction. You are worth it, and you are loved. Don't let anyone else ever tell you otherwise. ❤

I can understand how the mother thinks and feels the way she does, and I totally empathise with her as I couldn't imagine what it's like grieving your childs death. That said as someone who was extensively bullied, talking to other people who were also bullied, our experiences were very similar and I would suggest this is likely the same here. For example there are many young women out there who could relate to these levels of abuse.

I have friends who worked with and knew Hana Kimura and her mother (Also a professional wrestler) Kyoko, since Hana's death her mother has supported artists who have brought a spotlight on the issues surrounding what happened to her daughter but also she has absolutely gone after people who have attacked her daughter for events around the reality tv show Terrace House, and so she should, she was mercilessly bullied and attacked and at the age of 22 she was not able to cope with it and was given no help by the producers, she had the world at her feet and instead felt she had to end it all. So no I don't think the mother is over-reacting but I do think she would have worked with Oshi no Ko had they approached her and I think that should have happened if they did take influence from what happened. I honestly doesn't matter how any of the fans or people here 'feel' about the incident what is important is how the family of the deceased feel and they deserve to be heard, not bullied.
