There are a lot of good options of canvas types to use for acrylic paint pouring. There are some bad ones too. I review the four most common stretched canvas wood framed canvases.

Thank you for explaining this David!! I could never totally figure out what the difference was lol. With larger paintings I go with how the framing looks on the back. For the really big paintings, I look for cross supports that will help with keeping the canvas tight and give support for all of that weight from the paint. I think it also makes a difference with what type of paint you’re using. House paint is a lot heavier than “craft” paint, etc. So many things factor into it. Another great video!!! 💗

If you are really worried about your canvas, buy it by the roll and buy your wood stretchers as individual sections and stretch your own....gesso it as much as you like and there you have it folks. Great info, thank you! I never knew what the slots on the back of canvases were for (Stretching, apparently) and I had no idea what gallery wrapped meant or looked like. Super helpful. Probably a silly question, but is the amount of gesso something to worry about? Is there benefit to adding a layer before pouring? I know some people prefer to use a layer on top of an old pour, before re-using but not sure if there is any advantage to adding a layer to a new canvas. Thank you!

For acrylic pouring artist I don't think the gesso is as important but the more you have you generally get a more uniform undercoat which makes less of the canvas weave show through the dried pour.

@@LeftBrainedArtist David, I want to thank you again. Your suggestion for a floating frame was perfect. I had never seen a floating frame so i went to Michael's and the only ones I saw 14" and up. The woman at the frame dept suggested a shadow box. So of course i bought it. Uhm.. no good didnt work. I went back this morning to return it and it was a clearance item. Can't return it. However, low and behold what wasn't there yesterday was 8x10 floating frames buy one get one free. It was perfect. This was my second try at the pours. What was supposed to be a reverse flower ended up being an abstract Iris. Lol. The product Drizzle that Michael's has is crappy. There is a lid on the shape that doest stay on. When i lifted it up the lid was in my hand the bottom landed side ways. So I wound up using my dryer. I returned it and got a 5 split cup instead. Now that I've seen you do an open pour maybe thats the reason the lid comes off. But still the lid should actyally snap in place. However, it was a Christmas gift. My best friend loved it. So thank you thank you. Your's is the most informative site. Its greatly appreciated. ❤

Thanks for another really helpful video. Our Michaels has just opened after a fire before Christmas so I was planning a canvas buy (as they're on sale right now). I think I'll look for some better quality ones although Dollarama does really good canvases too surprisingly. One question - if you are putting down a base layer is there going to be any difference between a white canvas and a black? Or what is the point of a black canvas? Would it change the colours you put down? Thanks so much.

Most people tape them. However, I have found that 99.99% of the people that get my paintings could care less about the backside. I also noticed that the more gesso they use on the canvas- the more likely you can re use the canvas over and over. When there is only a little bit of gesso the cotton rips a lot faster. About spraying the back with water, does is only work one time? Or could I spray every few months when I notice the back isn't tight as it should?

I totally do Dolores. Generally I work on my blog or I play the piano/guitar for a few days to change my artistic tuning as it were and then go back to painting. That always seems to help me.

It don’t matter what you paint on....I’ve seen these cheap canvases with a painting of £8ooo work on them

You'll always find outliers for sure. My point here is use the packs (cheapest) or the level 2/3. The level 1 gives no value over the even cheaper versions and for very little additional cost you can get ones that look nicer and have more strength.

Wetting the back side and letting it dry? That works great for higher quality canvas but not so much for lower quality ones.
