Kakamega town is located 52km north of Kisumu city and 415km away from Nairobi city. It lies 30km north of the equator in western Kenya. Kakamega town is the capital and commercial hub of Kakamega County. Its Kakamega municipal market is the largest in the western region. Rural women in Kakamega County come to this town to sell their farm products at the market. Others have also set up kiosks in the central business districts. Wednesdays and Saturdays are the big market days that bring a large number of traders together. #Kakamega #KakamegaTown #KakamegaCounty
Kakamega County is in the western region of Kenya with the population of 1,660,651, of which 52% is female (KNBS 2009). It is the second most populous county after Nairobi County and the most populous rural county in Kenya. About 85.5% of the area is rural.
The British developed Kakamega for defensive purposes in 1903, and by 1920 it had become the district headquarters. The discovery of gold in 1931 brought an influx of settlers and greatly increased the town's population.
The Luhya tribe has practiced polygamy. A man gains respect based on the number of wives he has. This is partly because only a very wealthy man can afford to pay dowry (bride price) for multiple wives. The dowry was paid in the form of cattle, sheep, or goats. Today, polygamy is no longer widely practiced, but dowry payment still exists in Luhya communities. Wife inheritance is also practiced where a man marries his older brother’s wife when the brother dies.
Phase II construction of the iconic Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, has commenced. Phase I of the project was completed back in December 2017 at a cost of US $4.33m.
Phase II of the project
This phase will include putting up of modern well-covered stands that can accommodate over 25,000 people. This will elevate the status of the stadium to one of the best stadiums in the East Africa region and beyond.
In addition, the US $6.74m project will enable building of terraces, three mini-stadiums and construction of a modern swimming pool as well as installation of lifts. During the course of the development, the stadium will be operating normally with only the subjected areas being closed for the public.
This phase is expected to end approximately three years from now so as to pave way for the third and the last phase.
Upon completion, Bukhungu stadium will have conference facilities, an indoor fitness center, media center, recreational park, swimming pool, warm-up pitches, banks and shops among other facilities within its perimeter.
Other than its sports and recreational amenities, the stadium’s meetings and conference centers are also expected to meet international standards.
Kakamega is also home to Africa’s largest and most aggressive cobra, the Kakamega forest cobra.
Kakamega Forest is a mid-altitude tropical rainforest, the easternmost outlier of the Congo Basin forests. Its West African affinities are unique in Kenya, and the forest contains many species found nowhere else in the country. The forest lies in the Lake Victoria catchment, about 40 km north of Kisumu, and just east of the Nandi Escarpment that forms the edge of the central highlands.
Kakamega forest was first gazetted as Trust Forest in 1933, and two small Nature Reserves, Yala and Isecheno (totaling about 700 ha), were established within the Forest Reserve in 1967. In 1986, nearly 4,000 hectares of the northern portion of the forest, along with the adjacent 457 hectares Kisere Forest, were gazetted as a National Park, Kakamega Forest is an important catchment; the Isiukhu and Yala Rivers flow through the forest and gather tributaries from it. The terrain is undulating, with often steep-sided river valleys. The soils are well-drained, deep, heavily leached clay-loams and clays, of generally low fertility.
Last February, Governor Wycliffe Oparanya's cabinet approved the transfer process of the stalled Sh8 billion Kakamega Teaching and Referral Hospital to the national government.
