When you do trim carpentry, you can carry your block plane in an apron pocket, at hand when you need it. But in my shop, I rarely touch it.

I hope that one day you'll find a block plane that you will fall in love with and want to spend the rest of your life with.

once she's done with all those bad grains, she'll realize all she needed was a good woodworker

I can't remember who said it - maybe Christopher Schwarz - that a block plane really is a carpenter or machine woodworker's tool, not targetted for hand tool woodworkers.
@StephenGuidry2 ай бұрын
Christopher Schwarz includes the block plane as one of the “must have” planes in his Anarchists Toolbox book, despite, he says, many woodworkers not liking them

I hope that finger is okay. Looks like you nicked it pretty good!

I get why furniture makers don't like them; but my block plane is one of my favorite tools. I'm remodeling my house at the moment, and I have a new stanley low angle, bevel up plane with an adjustable mouth. It took forever to set up, but it makes trimming and tuning framing a lot easier. I'm also building my kitchen cabinets, and that's my go-to for evening up drawer sides and tuning. Having a one hander with an adjustable mouth that fits in my shirt pocket has been so convenient.

I love using my block plane at the shooting board. It limits your width a bit, but it's much more comfortable to hold than any 4 or 5 I've ever tried to use. I think the low-angle helps with making the cuts as well. Love that thing!

Same here. When end grain is tough to cut on my shooting board, I go to the block plane and it works every time

I have several because they are cheap and easy to find. It is my favorite plane to restore. I now have to find this sled kit.

I have old (inherited from grandpa) Stanley 220 I think, it misses the adjusting lever (I adjust it with light hammer), but I like it a lot, despite it being quite beaten :D Lot of woodworkers somehow despise/dislike them, you, Paul Sellers, Rob Cosman etc. I get that basic Stanley 4 does the same but somehow I just like cleaning the end grains and whatnot with block plane. But I gotta try that magnet thingamajig!

Block planes are handy on site for scribing etc... but yeah rarely use them furniture making.

What a great idea, now if only I had a block plane

I love it for awkward positions, such as finish carpentry and touch ups on assembled furniture pieces. It can be one handed and has just the right amount of heft to it.

I use mine all the time. I have two of them!

My best friend and I had an interesting "teaching" moment 50 years ago with a Master Carpenter from the Central Shops at the school district. We were in woodshop in Jr.High, and noticed he was using chisels for trimming the wood edge of the counter top surround in the main office (the counter had been enlarged and matched the 80 year old original picture perfect thanks to him). We asked him like two "Guys" invested in carpentry for life why he wasn't using a block plane, and why the chisels even though we saw the almost transparent shavings he was making! We talked 20/30 minutes... Basically, block planes have specific moments, so 99 times you are using a full size (#4 and up) plane, chisels ( 3/4", 1", 1 1/4" or 1 1/2") , a trimming/pocket knife. The one time of a hundred, you are reaching for a block plane (and he had one in his personal "wooden" carpenters box. He also had the district box, which was ok, but it was on wheels. He even showed us the what and how with chisels right there. It was a great moment. He mentioned that if you do this like he was, buy the absolute best chisels for trimming; the hold up and keep the best edge. He had 9 Record chisels. Six standard in a leather roll and three Record top end socket chisels in separate leather pockets in the side of his tool box. I grew up with a spoke shave, a #4 and a #7, and chisels. No block plane lololol 😆! Dad always thought they were a tool looking for something to do!! 😆😆😆. I do own one and have used it a *few* times.

My Veritas low angle block plane is my go to plane. I use the Stanley #4 and Record #5 for bigger stuff. Since I make a lot of keepsake boxes, the VLABP gets used the most.

I also do not use block planes at my bench. I am not doing any carpentry anymore and gave my block planes to my son-in-law, so I had to buy a block plane for this jig. Works great on a no 3 and 4 bench plane as well.
