Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Me and this guy share the same process of creativity. Listen to a song on repeat and the flow of the story unfolds for you over time. I wonder if that's in all creative people? Who knows

That's how it works for me too. And since I write visual novels, it's especially important as they are expected to include music in them. So then I have to go hire a composer to make something that captures the same essence of whatever inspired me.

It has been scientifically proven that when you listen to music, within the established decibel range, that that triggers the area in your brain responsible for the creativity. So that is why it is a good idea to listen to music often if you wanna create something creative.
@4xzx4

@@MrValdac My thoughts exactly. Whenever I write a paragraph or section about something that has been "born" out of the music I am currently listening to, I leave a note saying that "this was the inspirational music". That way, I will know what style the music needs to capture when I later hire a freelancing composer.

He is literally describing my life so much right now. After some HUGE uphill climbs, I just sold my first book deal and got another literary agent. I'm editing the book for my book deal and editing a novel I finished a few months ago. So many ideas and narratives are running through my head, so many notes. Some nights, I have to grab my phone and write what is in my head. It's pretty fun and intense.

I have the same thing with so many ideas and outlines and stories new and old. From action to drama, to Sci-fi and urban fantasy. I've written for my own enjoyment for years while searched for what I want to do with my life. I've been a nurse since '93 but always saw it as a stable temporary job but not a career. I was on medical leave in 2019 when my mom finally convinced me to publish my writing even if it's ends up as self-published. It's like once I made that decision I saw how I could adjust all my old stories to fit publications. On top of that I have all these new stories outlined because the ideals keep coming. Most are novels but I have a couple that are screenplays and even one that's a graphic novel. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with it all but I know this is what I should be doing. My full time job is time consuming so I often feel like I procrastinated the past 2 years but I think some of that was due to the pandemic. Anyway congratulations on your achievements. I hope to follow in you footsteps this year.

I've read about it in a book before, and as I understand, daytime thinking allows us to add detail to already established ideas (focus mode, or fast thinking), but night time thinking, in that moment of twilight, is when our brain best takes somewhat abstract ideas and finds connections between them (defused mode, or slow thinking). I would venture and say that it goes even deeper than the material explanation though since we still don't really know where genuinely creative ideas come from.

@Kelvin those definitions as their being used here; people use honestly to go against the facts all the time. Take a successful business man for example, the fact is 8/10 (real odds by the way, not made up) that he'll go out of business. Yet he "knows" what ever that means that he'll be a success. He's honest about his future success even though the facts disagree with him.

It's incredible how much having full time jobs limit you especially ones that expect you to literally be a slave to them. Thankfully I have money saved and my wife has a good paying job but I dont think I'd ever go back to not letting my craft/passion be my top priority, unless of course times got really hard and even then I'm not too sure lol.

On the truth and honesty. Yes. The best stories have both truth and honesty. But if you have to choose, it's honesty. Honesty connects us to each other. Even if the facts disagree and you have to sort through that conflict, the raw honesty lets you connect and work through that together with the audience.

I very much enjoyed this FC. I agree with Joston (and similarly do a lot of writing --- especially for lyrics for songs --- via long periods of looping, generally songs for scenes in a story). There are a number of good take-aways in this video --- such as the discipline (my word here) to go back, review your notes regarding objectives, and then rework, rework, rework (which much of the time, I find, means killing one's darlings). But no amount of revision can make up for a lack of initial inspiration --- and so capturing-in-writing the emotional essences when passion 'geyers' --- is key. My advice for watching this video? Put it on loop. :-)

It seems to all hinge on "what point is being made" and "is this the right person to be making the point". This tells me Mr. Joston Ramon Theney figures out at least his main 2 characters before he even starts writing scenes. I'm only recently coming to understand the importance of characters-first-thinking. Not so much their traits but the role they serve. Because doesn't the emerging plot need to inform what their traits will end up being anyway? And the plot has to come from inspiration. But inspiration needs a framework of character roles to be able to make it into written form. David Lynch loves to capture his inspiration in words so he can return to it later and further the idea. I'm beginning to think that in writing, this really comes down to having a character structure in mind in advance, just to even be able to capture your inspirations in a useful way.
@rugr82day
@rugr82day 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. It only works for me if I know the character(s) first, even if I know what the plot will be. Currently working on outlining a Young/New Adult series and knew the 2 different main characters for each book but I didn't like the plot for book 4. It just wouldn't come to me. Then I realized character A was great but I didn't click with character B's background. The story was so weak compared to the other books. I could tell people would say "Oh this is a "filler" book in the series". Or say "I liked all of them except book 4. It was just okay". Then I realized character B wasn't who I needed her to be and that's why the plot didn't fit. I finally had to revise who character B was before the plot improved. This made me realized that for me the characters must be there in the beginning for my plots to flow. If I going to write about an incident happening I want to already know how my characters will react to that incident. This often allows me to capture dialogue into even a beginning outline as I sit a brainstorm through ideas.
@LokeyeMC
@LokeyeMC 2 жыл бұрын
@@rugr82day Totally. I've got a couple projects in the pipe in the past 3 months and after reading your comment I now realize that everything really blossomed out of the characters. I had some design in mind, of what I wanted to convey to the viewers, but how it happened was completely determined from the characters at hand. So for me I guess the character-based inspirations have become the colors on my palette to paint the rest of the story. While that's mostly unconscious now, I did get stuck the other day but the first thing I thought of was: ok, wait, how can this emerge based on the characters in play. I notice it all feeds back into making the characters a lot more interesting too, so there's some compounding value to the approach. Cheers!

i used to think that this is how creativity works, waiting for inspiration to hit, but hitting my 30s now, I don't have that anymore. Now it's easier for me to go back to older habits and get that writing "flow" started purely out of habit and relying on the things I did before, rather than waiting for these visionary moments of enlightenment. Mostly because I just realised that there is really no real originality in things, but originality in approach or tone or perspective? More than that, my stories are becoming more and more research-based rather than ideas-heavy, so let's say people or characters based on experiences that happened to those in my community. To understand better I end up having to put in enough research both on the micro and macro scales just to be able to make sense of the drama that is on the page, and more so than that my storeis are becoming more about dramatisations of things that you can document or see but maybe it's too "slow" to notice or see? Stuff like that. So less inspiration and more process and habit for me 0_0

Truth and Honesty, reminds me of the difference between Wisdom and Wise. Wisdom are the tools and Wise is taking Wisdom and applying it in your life to become Wise... I like his look on Truth & Honesty. A great book on the explanations of many kinds of Love is "The Road Less Travelled" by Dr. Scott Peck.

It's crazy how well-spoken he is . . . but he did Axeman at Cutter's creek, a 3/10 on IMDB. Film Courage, the deeper I dig, is some vanity project wherein all of the "speakers" are given a platform to flex pecs. Their advice in these low-viewed KZfaq videos are the best thing many of the "guests" have done. Especially Chris Gore who has some kind of agenda I can't quite figure out.

That whole waking up thing is fine if writing's your job but doesn't work when you've gotta work a 12-hour shift the next day... trust me. I've tried it.

I've never understood how it's legal to repost someone else's song/video. (example:2hr song loop). So many videos like that exist on this platform, and it's very shady. I don't think it's right. By allowing those types of channels to stay operational and *monetized* , KZfaq is saying: *Why make original content on KZfaq? When you can bank off of someone else's work by posting a stolen song/vid and just split the profits when they copywrite dispute the video.* A 2hr video is a lot of watch time. and KZfaq knows it. So the company of KZfaq washes their hands clean of any responsibility for legalities. Meanwhile, *there are so many KZfaq videos that the AI super computers can't even identify all inappropriate content on children's channels.* Let alone the amount of channels that get highjacked and held for ransom. Should I jump ship? 🤔
